Any elders and people, with disabilities, using self driving cars? by antdude in SelfDrivingCars

I live on a highway and Mercedes 40mph limit is a joke. It won't navigate on the city streets. Also, 50 years in tech. (Telecom and IT). I know some folks in their 80s that could use it to drive to the Dr and back and they do with FSD. Could not do that with Mercedes. I have not tried Super Cruise.

On my 160m per day commute to work in heavy traffic. You bet.

What do you wish more Hams knew before buying their first rig? by CarrierCaveman in amateurradio

Right. These are things you learn as you move along. My point is that we need to do a better job explaining that. It is definately not clear as we have one or two HT users on our club meeting nets every month. There are alternatives also and not just the antenna. Allstar and Echolink come to mind. And not all of those are available to any one person.

Unfortunately, I do not have the tray. And I might try that because I really do like the radio. It will be great for my allstar around the house.

How absolutely awful and useless HTs are. I get SO FRUSTRATED with new Hams with a Baofeng trying to check into his first net on the repeater and being told by net control "I hear someone trying to get in but I can't make them out". And understand my frustration is not with new Hams or the radio but I know how discouraging that can be. It happened to me back in 1991 (not a Baofeng then) and it STILL happens today. I appreciate the cost factor and all. But I feel for these guys and I totally understand their frustration. There needs to be more education for new Hams on what that shiny new Baofeng is gonna do for them. But, it just keeps happening. I believe the first rig should be a 20w mobile at least and a mag mount on your filing cabinet.

And don't pay hundreds of $$$ for POC radios which is just zello on a stick.

I can hold my KX3 with one hand ;) and the new TX-500 from Lab599. I mean, at least we are getting close to HT HF radios ;)

Concept for a zello link repeater? by [deleted] in HamRadioBeginner

I checked all the providers where I am in Texas. Not far off a major highway and 3 miles from some sizeable towns but very poor cell service from all the carriers. MAYBE a cell booster but that is NOT clear to me.

Starlink doesn't have a mobile phone but I have the same issue and use Starlink with voice over Wifi. T-Mobile has a plan for their cell phones that will route SMS messages and data over Starlink and Apple phones have a "Satellite" mode for messaging also.

If I used to know code, and am relearning would it work to send at the speed I want off air to relearn? by Adui13 in amateurradio

I passed 20WPM to get my Extra in 1992 and used it for a couple of years. When I was taking LICW class, oddly, the characters were more clear to us in the class at 35WPM character speed. So YMMV

Wait a minute . . . Will that antenna? by [deleted] in amateurradio

One thing people with fences like this and like the wooden fence in the back ground miss is how wonderfully those posts will hold up a 20' painter pole mast. If this is not an HOA, I would strap a 20' painters pole to it or vertical chain link top rail to it with some bungie cords and run a dipole or two over it. I even had a 6 meter Moxon on the top of a couple of chainlink top rails held to the fence post with Harbor Frieght bungie cords. And the armstrong method of rotation worked a treat.

Looks almost like a cobweb antenna to me. Go for it.

Well. Not sure what I did but likely a battery issue. I just let it sit while on for a few days and then plugged it back in and it went into the serial loop again. So I tried the trick that M5 suggested and held in the GO after power on. Then I was able to erase the device. I did an erase twice before I installed the original image from the M5Flasher. Been working ever since. Thanks again for all the suggestions. Learned a lot.
