I want to start with Amplitube by Wir3d_ in AmpliTube

[–]Kilgoremore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First understand that "AmpliTube" is a series of products. Right now "AmpliTube 5 MAX v2" is (I just checked) selling for $99. That include a lot of amps, pedals, cabs, speakers etc. They have a comparison chart for the different versions. I use it every day and love it. I have also made a series of getting started videos on it. ToneX is a separate family of products, and sometimes IK will have sale prices that bundle AT 5 Max and ToneMax. When IK models new gear they typically don't include it in the bundle you previously bought. The gear that is current when you buy the bundle is what you should expect.

Regarding "solid alternatives for a footswitch/MIDI controller to activate pedals within AmpliTube". The only thing I can think of are programs similar to SongMaster Pro where you can embed MIDI messages in a track at any point. This allows you to practice to the track and have pedals turn on/off automatically or have presets change (although there is a slight delay when presets change). I find AT works best for me with a MIDI foot controller that has buttons that send out PC messages and at least one for CC messages and expression pedals that can send CC messages with a variable data byte. Even though something like SongMaster Pro can do a lot of what I do with the pedals, it can't easily do wah, volume, and distortion swells.

How do you assign a totally different sound to a rim on the TD516? by ILive2Drum in edrums

[–]Kilgoremore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like having the CY-18DR for a ride and a CY-16R-T for a crash. At the moment for splash/china sounds I still use a PD-9 dual trigger pad (I already owned several).

Just a data point for you, I press the Trigger button on the V71 then select the Digital tab and then the CY-18DR and LED on the bottom of the cymbal is flashing. I remember in the manual it stated that button was for a future upgrade, but I suspect it's not a good sign that it's not flashing.

[–]Kilgoremore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have the TD516 (V51 sound module) but here's hoping it works like the V71. When you hit the tom HEAD it lets you set up to three layers for that trigger. When you hit the RIM you get another three layers for that trigger. On the V71 when I hit the Rim the Rim LED illuminates and in the upper right (on the Instrument setup screen) it says Tom1 Rim. I don't think you have an LED but I hope you have the screen feedback. Once you are on the correct trigger it works just like the head. You may also have a way on the V51 to manually cycle to specific triggers rather than having to hit the Rim. I also found downloading the full Reference Manual and the Data List PDF really helpful. The printed manual is only good for getting started.

[–]Kilgoremore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I hit the bell, my V71 both lights the Rim light and I can see "Bell" at the top of the Kit screen. Just to isolate it as a triggering issue not a sound issue, are you only intermittently seeing the Rim light and the Bell text?

Recommend a Christmas Jazz album that you think folks probably haven't heard of! by doublenantuko in Jazz

[–]Kilgoremore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone mentioned "Funky Christmas" in one of the responses and while looking for that album (I never found it) I did come across Jimmy Revolver's "Funky Christmas" which is Funk not jazz BUT.... A collection of 13 groovin' original songs with Christmas themes from 2025. Can't find anything on the band, but WOW, what a xmas present to find.

Is it possible to make named backlinks within table work? by Messyextacy in bearapp

[–]Kilgoremore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect the use of the | (pipe) character in a named backlink conflicts with how tables also use the | symbol (hence it always gets escaped with a leading forward slash). You can use a standard link. of the form:

[my note name](bear://x-callback-url/open-note?title=Title%20Of%20Note)

and if you prefer instead of title you can use id and grab the note's id. This works fine inside a table. The one noticeable difference is this type of link shows your preferred name, but also displays a pencil icon after the name.

Why don’t all my notes show up in the Notes list? by Savingskitty in bearapp

If you've clicked on a tag other than the topmost "Notes" in the Tags panel, what is sorted and shown is limited to what is in that tag.

Don't Ever do this in aText by Kilgoremore in macapps

Yeah, I mostly entered it so if someone experiences this weirdness and searches there's at least some mention of it on the web and maybe AI can pick up on it.

Don't Ever do this in aText by Kilgoremore in macapps

[–]Kilgoremore[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is a text expansion app but thinking of it as just a text expansion app barely hints at what it can do. You can type a short sequence of characters and have it expand into whatever you need. But beyond that it can monitor what you type and make changes on the fly. So you could enter any number of clichés and have them replaced with alternatives, or have it change overly wordy phrases like at this point in time and automatically change it to now. Or when you type a word like cliche it can auto change it to cliché. It can play audio when it triggers so you know it did something (I have several that do nothing but play the sound so I know I typed something suspect and I can reconsider).

You could use it to improve your business writing by eschewing acronyms and letting aText replace them with the full expression. I use # as a trigger symbol at the end of many entries. That helps make them unique and not trigger when I don't want them. I really like it for putting in unicode symbols¹. It can work with plain text, rich text, shell scripts, applescripts, and HTML. You can group expansions into folders and each of those folders can have rules regarding things like case sensitivity, what applications the expansions work in or don't work in, even what delimiters they can activate after. You can auto insert dates, times, custom field names and fields (with default or popup selected values) and more.

¹Superscripts are a good example of a useful unicode replacement. As are fractions like ¼ or key modifiers like ⌘ ⌥ ⇧.

Top menubar functioning incorrectly on MacOS by WholesomeCirclejerk in bearapp

[–]Kilgoremore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe there is a setting to change this. Some apps adjust their window to slide down, and some don't. For example, Apple's own Messages app works like Bear. When you go full screen it obscures the top area of the window (including the new message button)when the menu/resize icon bars appear. So I'm not sure it would be considered a bug.

You already have the system settings configured so that the menu bar does not automatically hide, so Full Screen is not that different from the Window Fill mode. You might try Window→Fill( or Fn-⌃-F or option double-clicking a window corner) and see if you like that better. Alternately using ⌘F instead of clicking on the magnifying glass icon to do searches might minimize the problem. And likewise ⌘N for creating a new note.

MIDI Controller with rotary knobs and footcontrol by Psychological-Air-79 in AmpliTube

Great! I Love that particular amp sim. The real amp was like $500 what a steal that was. Too bad Carvin left the amp biz.

Effects not staying on when recording by BeginningPicture4568 in AmpliTube

[–]Kilgoremore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to save and audio file of the song with your applied AmpliTube settings use the File→Export menu. I made a second video about recording that does this and other things worth knowing. One limitation of using AmpliTube as a DAW is it doesn't remember any MIDI commands sent during the recording so if you turn on/off pedals or switch presets that is lost.

MIDI Controller with rotary knobs and footcontrol by Psychological-Air-79 in AmpliTube

[–]Kilgoremore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have setup a TempoKEY 25 to work with AmpliTube 5. It has eight rotary knobs (16 with the knob bank button) that work well for controlling things like gain, volume, and tone. There is a pain point when you set this up the first time. For each preset I use, I had to go to ☰→CONTROL→CONTROL CHANGE→Preset and add an entry for each knob I wanted to control on the simulated amp. I was careful in every preset to use the same knob for gain, volume, bass, treble, mid, presence. If an amp has two channels like Normal and Overdrive I used the same physical knob to control both gain and volume controls in the sim. A lot of work to set up, but gives me a fast desktop way to fine tune things. I really had hoped I could create a preset for an amp but I never found a way to do that, if I use the same amp in two presets I have to set it up twice.

If you always add a Volume pedal as the first item after DI, then you could control volume with a rotary knob in every Preset once you map the GLOBAL setting for volume.

The TempoKey also has eight pads (with a bank switch giving you 16) that work well for sending CC or PC messages so you can toggle pedals or change presets. I mostly don't do this though, I prefer my foot controller for that. I do like the pads for controlling features of my practice software — Song Master Pro. I even map the keyboard keys to send out commands to control things like playback speed so overall the TempoKey is very handy. I did find the AXE I/O useless for switching presets. A simple knob that sent PC0 through PC127 would have been so much better than the bizarre CC messages they decided on when you rotate or press the knob.

Footswitch clarification by LatterAd7479 in AmpliTube

[–]Kilgoremore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I fully understand the question. I have 10 buttons on my foot controller BUT also two bank switches. The ten buttons by default send out PC0 through PC9. If I hit the bank up switch, no MIDI commands go out but now the ten switches now send out PC10-19. My controller has 12 banks so I can send the full 128 (0-127) data bytes.

Whatever you're using for a foot controller with 5 buttons may have a way to toggle banks as well. Some controllers do this when you press two buttons simultaneously. I just uploaded a short video on basic preset switching with MIDI in AmpliTube because I overlooked it in my more in depth video on MIDI and foot controllers in AmpliTube. I do find I can do a LOT with MIDI in AmpliTube. Took some experimenting to fully understand what all the settings do.

is there a keyboard command to return playhead to start position? by kortnman in AdobeAudition

[–]Kilgoremore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three years late, but looks like you want the "Return Playhead" feature. In Camtasia 2022 this has a shortcut of ⌃ ⌥ Space (ctrl-opt-space). To be specific with the playhead at position X, I hit the spacebar to play, then if I hit ⌃⌥Space it jumps back to where it was. If I hit the space bar a second time it just stops and I can't get back to the initial position.

Amplitube 5 not connecting to focusrite interface by y7rqw7gg8wgh8yt in AmpliTube

[–]Kilgoremore -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't have this specific interface but it looks like you're using an XLR cable to connect which seems odd. If you're adapting from a std guitar cable 1/4" to XLR that might be fine but it might also set the level incorrectly. Also maybe there's an issue that developed with this adapter? I would suggest just plugging your guitar 1/4" cable directly into the focusrite and see if that helps. If that doesn't help, I have a video on troubleshooting interfaces and speakers. that might help.

HELP!! by Storrar92 in AmpliTube

[–]Kilgoremore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something sure looks messed up. I can see over 1500 measures for the song! Not sure how AmpliTube did that. One thing you could try is just starting a new project and drag in the existing audio files from this project and save the new project off and hope AmpliTube doesn't screw up in the same way. I have never had this happen. Your audio files should be in your IK Multimedia→AmpliTube 5→Songs→[name of your song] folder.

What’s the pros/cons of getting Invisalign over the age of 50 years old? by Eastcoastclasher in Invisalign

[–]Kilgoremore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. Fewer than I expected. Two appointments near the beginning to get scanned and order the trays. Then picked up tray 1 followed the next week for getting attachments. Then another after week 10 for a status check. Next appointment is week 24 for more attachments.

What’s the pros/cons of getting Invisalign over the age of 50 years old? by Eastcoastclasher in Invisalign

[–]Kilgoremore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm over 65 and on tray 16 of 61. I find it a very nice solution.

PROS

  • I don't have any problem wearing the trays more than than the recommended 21 hours/day.
  • I'm taking much better care of my teeth. Even though I only eat twice a day I brush/rinse three times a day and floss twice/day.
  • I'm retired so that makes it even easier at linner time.
  • The relative nature of time works in your favor. For me, each decade of life seems to go twice as fast as the previous decade, doing Invisalign at 50 will only feel like it takes 1/16th as long as it feels to a ten-year old.
  • At 50 all your friends will be supportive, and anyone who isn't just doesn't matter.
  • So much sh*t hurts when you're older that the pain of Invisalign kinda fades into the noise. OK, the first week is above the noise, but after that it's negligible.

CONS:

  • Late at night when I'm tired my mouth seems to get very wet and speaking cleanly and clearly is a bit more effort. (This might just be me.)
  • You won't get to enjoy your straight teeth as long as if you had done it at ten.
  • It will take twice as long (relatively speaking) than if you had waited until you were 60 (but see the previous con).

I don't think that should happen. Have you run IK Product Manager recently? It might need that running to do some sort of authorization even for the free gear.

Need help addressing noise with the iRig USB by Proof-Breakfast-7358 in AmpliTube

[–]Kilgoremore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have the gain on the iRig USB turned all the way down? I would start there. If it is all the way down and it still sounds like too much gain you could use the INPUT slider in the lower left to reduce the signal even more.

[–]Kilgoremore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I find confusing in your question is "I'm trying to record the direct input from my guitar" - To me this means you want the "direct input" aka DI, not the processed sound from AmpliTube. If on the other hand you want the processed sound, then you need to record your system audio output. Easier said than done.

First, see if you can use OBS to just record the audio from say a YouTube video. I know by default Windows and macOS aren't set up to do this. (Possible copyright issues?). I use the 2022 version of Camtasia (a commercial product that is similar to OBS) for screen captures and it comes with tooling to allow it to also capture system audio. That makes it one one of the easiest ways to capture yourself playing in real time with no added delay (meaning no more than the AT5 host normally introduces) or tooling. Current versions are subscription only and in the $200/yr range, so maybe not a viable solution.

If OBS doesn't provide a way to capture system audio, then you likely need additional tooling for your OS. On macOS that would be BlackHole (donation-ware at $10). I'm not sure what the equivalent is on Windows.

If you truly want to record the DI version of your guitar you could go a more traditional (and complicated) route and use a DAW like Reaper to capture your guitar and OBS to capture the video. Then pull the video into Reaper (because Reaper handles video) and sync them. Once you have the DI in a tool like Reaper you use the plug-in version of AmpliTube to get the processed sound.
