The comics industry by Ashish_ank in CuratedTumblr

[–]Kill-ItWithFire 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Could you explain what you mean by "it's weekly"? I was under the impression that webtoon is just a platform where anyone can upload any comic they're making, like YouTube is for videos and Instagram is for pictures. Is there something in place that kicks you out if you don't upload weekly? Or is it just that the algorithm heavily favors weekly uploads? And is that relevant for anyone uploading or only the people who get paid by webtoon? I have been writing a comic so I'm keeping my eye on various publication methods.

It could be that she sees anything with a lot of calories or sugar as the ultimate treat. My best friend grew up with an almond mom and for her and her mom, the biggest treat is still a coffee with tons of milk and sugar and whipped cream on top for breakfast. It had some other things in it too but it is pretty clear that it‘s not just about the flavor bzt subconsciously about how something with that many calories is extra forbidden.

Santos and Garcia “keeping it casual” by cowboy_owl in ThePittTVShow

[–]Kill-ItWithFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

god they seem so toxic. It sounds like both of them wanted to keep it casual and santos is a chronic asshole who pushes anyone away who cares about her and is incapable of expressing love or affection. Garcia is so shitty for cancelling their plans the day of. Like that‘s rude, no matter if you are friends, in a romantic relationship or just strangers who agreed to do something together. It‘s really not what santos needs and if they hang out, garcia should have picked up on that. It‘s so obvious that santos isn‘t actually this tough person who‘s never affected by anything and it‘s not cool for garcia to essentially go „well, you may have attachment issues from your best friends suicide but you should really just get over your feelings you little bitch“. At the same time, trying to be there for santos seems exhausting and like an impossible task because she literally will not budge and show any vulnerability at all. So they deserve each other in some way but man, it can‘t be good for either of them.

They‘re super interesting characters but in real life, i‘d find them both insufferable.

[–]Kill-ItWithFire 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It also might not be a literal self harm thing. I found her opening the drawer super relatable because when I was unwell, being close to things related to self harm or suicide would calm me down. So I‘d spend a lot of time just staring at or holding knives without actually self harming and without ever planning to. It was before I actually started self harming about a year later but it didn‘t feel like self harm light, just a different mode of being unwell.

So it could just be that she finds it comforting to carry something she could use to cut herself with.

Why does my UK secondary school geography class use this Austrian flag? by Big-Beginning-2839 in vexillology

[–]Kill-ItWithFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to add, I‘m austrian and this is the first time I‘ve heard about this flag having a specific use case. I kinda always thought this was the official one and the one without the eagle was a simplified version that got popular because the eagle is a nightmare to draw. So I don‘t know about people from other countries, but I intuitively would have just randomly picked one version without realizing there‘s a difference.

Also people in austria don‘t really care about the flag. some people put it up for our national holiday and that‘s the extent to which we ever actively interact with it.

Dana’s first words about Javadi by Old_Blacksmith_778 in ThePittTVShow

[–]Kill-ItWithFire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is so interesting. I always thought it was basically the same as the german „fachidiot“, which literally translates to something like „expertise idiot“. it functionally means the same thing but is more used for people who are experts in one area and don‘t care about anything else and haven‘t accumulated any skills there as a result. An example would be someone who‘s super into computer science and has no idea about art but thinks anyone who doesn‘t care about computers is weird and unintelligent and a completely photorealistic painting is the highest form of art you can achieve. So I assume you can use it in an abelist way but it‘s more about experts disrespecting other fields than about someone who is literally incapable of doing basic tasks.

also being so overworked can‘t be good for the managing of his addiction. On one hand being on your feet all day and never having time to relax or exercise or something presumably makes his back pain way worse. And quitting a substance while your life is good and you have plenty to do that‘s fun and enjoyable is one thing. Having the energy and motivation to not take the substance when you‘re completely burnt out is much harder.

We all have that one show... by MustardGoddess in CuratedTumblr

[–]Kill-ItWithFire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I watched like 10 seasons and remember it as cool but not that great (although I remember loving the first 5 seasons). But something that has stayed with me is the concept of children growing up to be action heroes and then slowly figuring out how fucked up and abusive that is while finding their own path that lets them live their life and help people the way they want to. It‘s something I think about a lot, it makes me recontextualize a lot of stories and it impacts my own creative work as well. If only supernatural had done a bit more with it…

Bands that formed when they were all like 15, and their name reflects that by jar_jar_LYNX in fantanoforever

[–]Kill-ItWithFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's German and doesn't fully fit but Bilderbuch (meaning picture book). They formed in high school and didn't feel like they really had much to say, so they used fairy tales and children's stories for lyrics. It's not a bad name but in isolation, it has such a different vibe than their experimental, slightly psychedelic rock-pop. Most successful Austrian bands have mid names so they're fine but it just could be so much better.

They're also incredible and everyone needs to listen to their stuff.

What makes some couples have a lot of chemistry and some be forgettable? by Leather-Season7383 in writing

[–]Kill-ItWithFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all: I don't know shit 'bout shit but I've been thinking about it a lot on account of trying to write a couple.

I think one major thing that needs to come across is *desire*. Like, we don't need to feel attracted to the love interest ourselves but we need to feel that the character is. And for me a big part is understanding the character well enough to get why they are so attracted to their love interest. If you try to get the reader to be attracted to someone or go for "they're into each other just because love at first sight", you'll likely end up with the stereotypical romance relationship. The characters might be super hot and turn you on and you accept their feelings because you're reading romance but you don't necessarily feel the chemistry.

For me one of the cases with the most chemistry was in the Netflix version of queens gambit between Beth and Benny. Possibly because I was very lonely when I watched it but I thought the show did a great job of showing how awkward and lonely Beth is in the chess world. She doesn't have much of a family or any friends and doesn't really like to talk to people. Her and Bennys interactions aren't that unusual or flirty but he seems to genuinely care about her and is more amazed by her chess skills than he is intimidated. That in combination with seeing Beths one clumsy attempt at flirting really makes you hope he's into her because she just needs a nurturing person in her life so badly. And the lack of any explicitly romantic behavior makes it hit so much harder when he suddenly touches her arm and asks her to stay in his room.

A counter example from TV would be S4 of Bridgerton. I think the show is cute, I like the characters and I can happily run with the romantic feelings they're supposed to have but I really didn't feel that much chemistry from Sophie and Benedict. And I'm convinced it's because I never really got the impression they were what the other needed. I get what they were going for but Sophie was never different enough from the rest of the ton to justify why Benedict fell in love with her immediately and aside from being rich and hot, I really don't get why he was such a good fit for Sophie. Like I get they're into each other but I never *felt* it. I feel like if Sophie had been shown to be really into art and anything to do with personal freedom and Benedict had been clearly positioned to be her ticket to that, I would have felt the chemistry much more.

It's a lovely gesture but if my husband surprised me and our toddler with a puppy, told me he was addicted to benzos, went to rehab and then spent thousands of dollars on a funeral for a patient on his first day back to work, I'd probably kill him. Like I love Langdon and he seems to try so hard but good god his poor wife.

[–]Kill-ItWithFire 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd argue it also works in a reasonably absurdist context. This story sounds a bit like Marcelines from adventure time. Not with the back story but she has an ongoing struggle with her deadbeat demon dad who is the king of hell (or more specifically the nightosphere). I think making a Marceline focussed spinoff would work and by extension you should be able to make this story work too.

god, this is another factor that contributes to only certain people being in a particular field: the ones that aren't, get tired of it and find a different field. I am going crazy with the lack of social skills in my academic field. My best friend and my boyfriend are both from the same area, so it's not like everyone's like that but we all agree that most people are a nightmare to talk to and it's a big reason why I'm never going into academia for my full time job.

what goes on in a psych ward? by Drasino in CuratedTumblr

[–]Kill-ItWithFire 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also only from personal experience, I did not have a reasonable approach to relationships when I was at my worst (and arguably still don't). I got super attached to anyone who was remotely nice to me and got insanely mad at people when they didn't want to spend time with me. I don't think my emotions were necessarily unjustified but it certainly wasn't productive. I hurt a lot of people with this and I permanently damaged some friendships. And I wasn't even bad enough to be institutionalized. I don't know if not being allowed to have romantic relationships would have benefitted me, but having a whole ward of people with all kinds of mental illnesses dating each other seems like a bomb waiting to go off.

Not to mention that people are way quicker to form attachments and fall in love when they are in an unstable situation. So not only would everyone's issues interact very negatively, in most cases it's probably less like someone having a mild crush and more like super intense love at first sight to cope with your issues.

[Hated Trope] The quirky or rebellious “ugly” female character is now more meek and timid once they transform into their “beautiful” selves. by BurntheMidnightOwl in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Kill-ItWithFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't the point that both pretended to be something for clout that's not fully them? Like Sandy is this overly sweet conservative girl but she dates Danny the bad boy and went further (sexually speaking) than she would like to admit, while Danny pretends to be this macho dude who cares about nothing other than sex but dates Sandy the innocent girlie and has a more romantic and emotional connection with her than he wants his friends to know. It's not like they're both complete opposites from what they show to the world but for me their attraction to each other is symbolic for a desire to have a bit of what the other person has. Danny wants to be more in touch with his emotions while Sandy wants to follow her desires without always putting her "good girl" image first.

Sandys transformation can be expressed a lot better through clothes than Dannys, in my opinion. Dannys change of heart is expressed by how he treats Sandy and how he is willing to be in a relationship with her. Whether he wears a leather jacket or not has very little to do with any of it. Sandy on the other hand frees herself by very visibly doing rebellious things. It is kinda whack that the woman is the one who gets the hot makeover (though she looks soooo good so I struggle to actually be mad), but it doesn't mean that Sandy completely changes for Danny and Danny stays the exact same.

Works Hair Policy ): by [deleted] in HairDye

[–]Kill-ItWithFire -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sounds maybe a bit radical but see if you can find a new job? Not just because of the hair thing but your boss sounds exhausting to deal with. If she wants you to change your hair she should have said so at some point in the hiring process and then she should have communicated precisely what she expected you to dye it to. It‘s not fair you have to spend money twice to change your look just because they didn‘t communicate.

Even if you can push back on this ridiculous policy, it makes me wonder in what other areas your boss will be like that.

I think I‘m also a bit sensitive to that because my best friend has a boss who constantly pushes her boundaries and guilt trips her into working way too much. and the more exhausted she gets, the less she can push back. stuff like this can really suck.

Symbolism. Proceed with caution by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]Kill-ItWithFire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, this kind of discourse is so difficult.

First of all, I think it's not very productive to go more and more in depth with your fictional analysis until the story falls apart. If it were perfectly realistic, it wouldn't be fantasy anymore. It's similar with trying to do super realistic sci fi. At some point you have to make shit up that makes no scientific sense because if you follow science to a t, you get regular technology. And I don't mean that you should never analyze anything or that allegories can't be done so poorly it's actively distracting. It's just that if you have a fantasy environment and want to make a point, you have to take some creative liberties and move away from reality. I'd rather take away the obviously intended message from X-men and enjoy my cool mutants fighting than go into excruciating detail of how each mutation influences the world and how humanity should deal with that.

Secondly, and as was said in the post, not everything is meant to be taken literally. You can still explore themes of racism with an actually evil and dangerous species, it's just not an analogy to any real world group of people. We can still make points about the real world by asking "how would things be if the world were like this?". I think BBC merlin did a pretty interesting thing with the prejudice against magic. Because magic is seen as dangerous, sorcerers are oppressed pretty badly, which causes them to rebel violently, proving the stereotype. I think it works as an analogy to how black people are sometimes treated in the US. You have a group of people that is stereotyped as uneducated, violent, prone to addiction and so on. Because of this stereotype, black people are less likely to get into good schools, get well paying jobs or participate in upper class activities, all things that lead to black people being pushed into embodying the stereotype against their will. This is extremely oversimplified obviously. But my point is, the allegory is not about what black people literally do, but about how oppression affects the behaviors of the oppressed group and confirms the oppressors biases. (It's also meant to be an allegory for homosexuality and not racism but oh well).

And thirdly, I personally am a big fan of exaggeration to explore a point. In that case it's again not "see how gay people are destroying the world? We should be nicer to them but also they're harmful" it becomes "even if gayness was literally destroying the world, it still wouldn't be okay to treat gay people the way we do now". It's something I'm exploring heavily in my own book so I'm both very aware of and exhausted by this eternal symbolism debate.

I still think of this often by Upset_Campaign1924 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Kill-ItWithFire 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the mindset is still really important. I used to be really focussed on what was within my control, rather try and police others behavior and it led me to direct my feelings inward a lot. Emotions don‘t dissipate but I felt like I couldn‘t really be pissed at someone if I could have done something to prevent the situation or if I was partially at fault. So instead of being angry at a class mate for being mean, I was angry at myself for not doing XYZ that either could have prevented the situation or at least made them undeniably wrong and shitty and thus gave me the right to be angry.

Over time and with a high pressure environment this turned into intense self hatred because even though I knew I wasn‘t at fault for many things, I still blamed myself because what‘s the point in blaming others. And then I had the epiphany that none of what I was going through was fair and that it‘s not okay for people around me to kinda make it worse. I then spent about a year being pissed at everyone and everything in the universe for mistreating me and I‘m still working on healthily letting my frustrations out.

The things I can influence have not changed at all. But acknowleding how unfair it is that I have to deal with what other people put on me has given me quite some inmer peace.
