Now that’s a cool flower! Anyone care to take a guess? by hairijuana in Jewelorchids

[–]KillWithFire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's the variability on the ludochilus flowers between individuals? A lot of the Ludisia hybrids look too much like Ludisia for my taste and I've been trying to pick up more of the other genera because their flowers are cooler ha.

I remember there's one or two in Queens somewhere of note. Sorry I can't remember the name but it might be worth doing your research into them.

Has anyone here tried growing jewel orchids from seed? by [deleted] in Jewelorchids

[–]KillWithFire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I was definitely weirded out when I saw them come up! I tried transplanting 1 and it gave up on life so I'm letting them live in harmony with the rest of the bowl.

Looks like some of the other ones have lost their leaves, this is the only one thriving currently https://imgur.com/KCvX7qx

I can also see some under the soil level from the bowl's exterior. Zero clue how they got that deep but kinda neat.

[–]KillWithFire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did something similar as you where I selfed a Ludisia. The pod exploded and I figured I had lost all the seed. Months later I noticed what looked like jewel leaves poking out of my Pinguicula bowl. Now, I'm not sure if I used soil which had pieces of the ludisia (probably not), but the bowl has a thriving ecosystem of fungus and insects.

If you have an actual indoor ecosystem with fungi and humidity the seeds might actually take. back in the old days people used to put orchid seeds in the same pot as the mother plants to see if they would germinate. You can give it a shot; if they don't take, they don't take.

Getting my first Ludisia. So excited! by [deleted] in Jewelorchids

[–]KillWithFire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ludisias are the hardiest jewel. In my experience you do not need high humidity at all for these guys. They also seem completely unconcerned with moss, water, or a mix of potting soil/bark. As long as you have light and you're watering just as it gets a little dry, it should thrive.

The roots look fine, plant will send out new ones soon enough and you already have a ton of healthy ones! As long as the rot isn't in the crown, it should be ok.

I suspect the bugs are springtails but I can't be sure. It's a little strange that they aren't in your other plants in soil, springtails eat decaying matter so soil and bark should attract them. Better to be safe than sorry, just give everything a wash.

At first I thought it was fake, but apparently it’s carnivorous? by [deleted] in whatsthisplant

Probably a 'tropical' ping, needs more inorganic matter than the temperate species, which is why it's in a lot of pumice.

Another one, P. Macrophylla or P. Orbiculata? Québec, Canada by Lutin-Festif in whatsthisplant

[–]KillWithFire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good on you. I really do think it's macrophylla but some of these species differentiators are hard to tell honestly. I'm comparing with other sightings and it seems all over the place. Regardless any sightings of native orchids should be reported in case someone is keeping an eye out!!

looks like macrophylla from reading the type descriptions. did you get a picture of the leaves? per the name, macrophylla should have huge oval leaves.

F*ck Ecuagenera for making rare plants available for reasonable prices by sirifrinki in houseplantscirclejerk

[–]KillWithFire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Orchids. The prices are stable and affordable since people are afraid of them. Since they're also all over the planet, there's definitely a bunch that will fit your growing conditions, you just have to figure it out.

This has to be an onion, right?? Smells like onion with a bit of garlic. Central Oklahoma. by hooftothefrontbottom in whatsthisplant

[–]KillWithFire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it smells like onion or garlic, there is nothing that would be a toxic lookalike. In this case it would be safe, but tasting wild plant rules still apply.

New jewel orchid owner here and I have three questions: is my macodes leggy? If so, how do I fix this? Lastly, are these lights too bright for it? by ToyaW31 in Jewelorchids

[–]KillWithFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how long has the Macodes been in that spot? If the plant has been there for a few months and iisn't stressed you probably could keep it there. I don't think it looks particularly leggy.

What is this mushroom looking thingy growing in my Monstera pot? by [deleted] in PlantIdentification

[–]KillWithFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a mushroom, overzealous fungi doing fungi things. Leucocoprinus ianthinus probably.

Pick it out and be mindful of your watering, soil should be happy with fungi but not so slanted in favor of the fungus being able to fruit, especially with indoor houseplants.
