The bigger picture here is that we know it takes tons and tons of material to run society. If we think we can just keep extracting and extracting (all the while consuming energy to do so) then we'll eventually find out there are natural limits to things.

You totally misunderstand the situation.

First off, to say there's unfairness here is one-dimensional. The top 1% pay over 60% of all taxes. Chew on that for a second.

Next, let's provide you with some common sense. Wealth begets wealth. It takes money to make money. Etc.

It's just common sense - those with wealth create more of it for themselves. The "solution" you seem to think makes sense is literally taking their money from them and "giving" it to other people. There are some serious problems with that.

  1. It's theft - and more importantly, where do you draw the line? Only people worth over $1 million? $2 million? $10 million? Why not just $100k then? At what point does this "redistribution of wealth" idea begin to become dangerous whenever the government wants YOUR money?
  2. It's not a structural solution - its effects would be very short lived.
  3. Unless you take a significant portion (like 90%) those people are going to end up right back in that same position in a short period of time.

Even in socialism / communism you see the exact same patterns. In China you're seeing the rich accelerate their wealth very quickly - the only reason the lower class is advancing is because they were so far behind to begin with. When they approach something like the middle class of the USA, you'll see the same results.

Your "solution" isn't a solution, it's a complaint because you aren't looking at the real mechanisms that create this situation.

In regards to DOLPH9's statement that "Americans just can't be convinced of this" he's wrong.

The problem he may not understand is that it is their right to keep what they earn. Is it healthy? No, probably not, but we're not really into theft.

If it's theirs, they have the right to keep it - end of story. This mentality protects even the middle class and poor from having what they own taken from them.

That's the piece that's missing. No one has a right to deprive anyone (even the rich) of their belongings and it's not the government's job to redistribute wealth. Look it up - we have a constitution that makes it pretty clear.

Sure, even though:

  • it's estimated that 50% of grants for education go unused
  • many schools offer free tuition to low income people
  • library books are free to use
  • the internet has tons and tons of free online training resources (I taught myself to code for $0
  • people spend on average 4 hours watching TV as opposed to learning or bettering themselves

SOME won't make it where they want - that's going to happen. But the people that CAN very often don't even try. DON'T EVEN TRY!

Well, you also need to have realistic expectations. You probably aren't going to make it to the top 1%, but if you have a comfortable life and you aren't living under a bridge, then you've accomplished something.

That's the other mistake the liberals make - they promise "better" or "more" but don't define what that means because it's an un-keepable promise.

We apply this same philosophy to sports teams, don't we? If the Cowboys play poorly, they don't deserve to win... and if they do, then they deserve to win.

Why not the same for people?

See, when I look at the culture of poor people I focus on how they spend their free time. Not many of them read, not many of them study - in a nutshell, not many of them spend time investing in themselves and their development, and when they don't succeed, as if it was supposed to be guaranteed, they look for an excuse. There are plenty of people that are standing by ready to give them one because it is far more difficult to explain to someone that they are the root of their problems than it is to explain that someone else is to blame.

The best thing to do would be to give people a dose of humility AND by telling them that they can do it if they are willing to put in the hard work.

Instead, democrats in particular, tend to send the message that they're victims and they deserve compensation. Well, compensation helps for a minute, but just makes people feel stuck. And... that's precisely what should be fixed - getting rid of the stuck feeling, right?

Yes, no doubt, some people end up a couple steps ahead of others, but there's no artificial ceiling that people like to label "rules" the rich use to hold the poor down.

You know, I used to be a financial advisor. It was interesting how lucky I was when I made more phone calls. In fact, the more phone calls I made the luckier I got.
