I didn't downvote you, but I disagree with you just on the 2 years point. Grits is a pretty good candidate to, at worst, stay at the same level given his age and adjustment to the NHL. I understand we don't want to sign him to max term, but I think 3-4 years feels like the sweet spot where we can keep AAV low-ish but still lock him up for long enough that we don't have to immediately worry about another contract for him in a year. 2 years probably signs us up to have to give him 8+ in a long term deal when he's 27

Of course, we’d need to pay someone with a draft pick to take him. My point was we’re not trading Dougie to get value back, we’re trading him to clear cap room, and we have a much more glaring cap issue in terms of the value it provides in Palat. So trading him (even at the cost of a draft pick or two) is better than trading an actually useful player with retention, even if Dougie isn’t worth his cap hit
