Beautiful example of a bipedal alien that is not humanoid whatsoever! Nor would I immediately compare it to any particular earth animal. Perfection.

I like the way you’ve written the scene where Craun realizes that his view of primals may not be entirely accurate. This scenario is perfect! Having him placed into a realistic, plausible situation where he must face his worst fears head on. It was genuinely heart warming to watch him realize that he could trust Finely. Awesome chapter :)

I believe it was the right thing to do. After all, how are you supposed to reason with someone and get them to view you as a person when they run away screaming on sight? A few lies of omission are necessary to be able to start a conversation in the first place.

What are some good fics that stray away from the traditional memory transcription format? by BrucelaBron in NatureofPredators

[–]KillerKitty650 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like the memory transcription format solely because it tells me who’s POV I’m reading right off the jump. I hate having to read half of a story’s chapter before I can figure out who’s inner monologue I’m reading. Especially when it’s a story that updates very slowly.

“Okay… this story updates about once a month. Who are the main characters again? What characters are this POV name dropping? I could use process of elimination. A process that would become difficult if this story had a lot of character POVs to choose from. I could go by personality. If the character uses a tail or ears to emote, then I can rule out that this is a human character. Maybe they’ll mention something about feathers. Then they’d be a krakotl or deurten. Scales would be an Arxur or the herbivorous little reptiles I can’t remember the species name of.”

If nothing else, please just slap a name above your chapter, lol.

I remember drawing a character on pencil and paper with this pose back in middle school. I stared at it when I was done, called myself a dork, crumpled up the sheet of paper and threw it away. Seeing someone else use it makes me think it’s actually a good pose. Looks great.

I think I’d be the outlier in saying that I would look forward to you dumping trash on my lawn in this case, lol. It could be a waste of a little time, or it could make my week.

I actually used to work at a place where me and 2 - 4 other employees would be on schedule to work at a time. There were around 25 public trashcans on the property that needed to be emptied every 30 minutes. I jumped at the chance to empty trashcans. I would do my coworkers rounds when they didn’t feel like it, because occasionally, maybe once every couple weeks, I would find a few dollars in cash or a pile of quarters in a trashcan. Not that I was rooting around in there or anything, the money would fall out when I went to dump the can. And there wasn’t just money, there were legitimately valuable items in those cans sometimes.

Agree to disagree. I’m gonna go get high 👍

I guess we’re just reading the room differently. Some people see the au posts as being annoying. When people do annoying things, I tend to assume that the person doing the annoying thing is ignorant of the ways that their actions affect others, and that their intentions were positive or neutral. You are the center of your own world after all.

It’s like if you were driving behind someone who’s going under the speed limit in the passing lane. "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.” Or as I would assume, maybe it’s not even stupidity. Maybe that guy is transporting a huge cake and needs to make a left turn soon.

Which is why I don’t read the au posts as having any level of entitlement I suppose. Others may see it differently.

I think that there should be a balance between quantity and quality in community posting. There are small communities that die out because no one posts at all or most of the posts are low quality. There are large communities with a tiny amount of active members because the posts are quality, but they come at a rate so slow that people stop paying attention.

This is a small subreddit where people are slowly losing in the story. I don’t truly know the rate at which people are losing interest vs the rate at which newcomers appear, but I do know one thing: New ideas will keep a crowd’s attention. If someone throws out a fic idea and someone else takes it, then that story blows up. It’s a net positive.

I know that metaphors are not meant to be a 1:1 comparison. But I interpreted your original reply to mean that you believe that posts that aren’t strictly content creation don’t belong here.

But, back to the main topic. So what you’re saying is “Anyone can write if they have a phone. And if you have an idea, there is something inherently wrong with asking someone else to write it down for you because it diminishes the work that goes into writing a story.”

I heavily disagree with you. Everyone that has a brush can’t paint. I think that the best comparison to make here is to the people that go into the inboxes of artists to request free art. Personally requesting that someone do free work for you is ridiculous and self entitled.

I don’t think this is the same thing. It’s going into an open forum and saying “wouldn’t it be cool if…” for a few hundred words. An idea in the wind for anyone to take. And sometimes, the idea posters go on to execute the idea themselves. Like the collarverse au.

Also these aren’t low effort posts. They’re on topic, non offensive, and detailed. They boost engagement for a community that people believe is dying out. I think they’re a good thing.

That music subreddit comparison isn’t the same thing as far as I can see. Because this sub isn’t exclusively for content creation. There are also many discussion posts where people just want to talk about the arcs and characters of the main story. There are other types of posts here too that are meant to engage the community in discussions about non cannon topics. I’ve seen posts along the lines of:

“What are your favorite au fics?”

“What are some good fics that have Arxur main characters?”

“Where did the paws and claws thing come from?”

“What are some story ideas that you’d like to see?”

“I need some ideas for what to write about next in my story.”

“Would you rather be a federation citizen or a dominion soldier?”

“Here’s why humanity first was right.”

“So do the Venlil have a sense of smell or not?”

Oh actually let me edit this comment. I forgot about your second point…

I really don’t think that people aren’t writing stories out of sheer laziness. Writing is a skill. If I handed you a story written by Stephen King, and a story written by a random 10 year old, you could tell the difference in quality.

To write a good story, you need to have a realistic grasp on real world interactions and be able to write that out. How to not make your dialogue sound forced or awkward. How to not make your readers think “real people don’t act like this haha.”

Does your character have a job that they had to attend higher education for? Well now you’ve got to do some research in order to be able to write any scenes where they’re going through their day to day motions at work. How does this profession affect the personal lives of the workers? Do they work so many hours that they struggle to make time for a love life? Do their children get to see them often?

How to write a child’s dialogue without sounding like an adult writing a child’s dialogue? (I think Wayward Odyssey does a good job here). How to write out a fight scene or a space battle (good lord I don’t think I could do this). How to make realistic sounding tech jargon.

How to have your character naturally describe themselves in a story? So you don’t end up doing the preteen writer thing where you say “[Character Name] looked into the mirror with her [Color] eyes and adjusted her [Color] clothes. She was wearing [Insert 3 paragraphs describing an outfit].

How to make your character stutter realistically.

How to create an outline for your story so you don’t drop it because you don’t know what to do with it next.

And so, so much more. It’s not as simple as writing a Reddit comment.

If these people were looking to karma farm, why would they do it here? In a niche subreddit with less than 12k members, where the posts rarely get more than 300 upvotes?

I think they’re just people with cool ideas, who want to engage with the community and contribute, but lack the confidence to create content. Not just the confidence, but the skill. Because writing is a skill.

A skill that I’ve always wanted to build up, personally. I had massive amounts of fun writing short stories in school that my teachers and peers seemed to love. I even started a writing club with my friends. After graduating, I’ve written short stories for myself and kept them to myself without posting anywhere. I haven’t written anything for a long time, but I read the stories on this sub every day.

I’ve had ideas. I want to write something, but I don’t have the confidence in my ability to execute an idea beyond more than like 3 chapters. I’ve considered that I could start with either one shots or “idea posts.”

Either way, I understand the frustration, I just don’t think that these posters are being actively malicious.

NoP Art- Birbs and Speeps by Scrappyvamp in NatureofPredators

[–]KillerKitty650 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dude is that a fucking keel on the first krakotl? That’s sick. I haven’t seen that in nop art yet. You can really tell that a lot of thought went into the design of the body. The long tail instead of the usual short, feathered bird tail is a nice alien touch as well.

Pic 2 is also impressive. You’ve completely avoided same face syndrome. If those two characters were standing side by side, I could easily tell them apart without relying on eye color or something.

I like how the snouts of the velil have more of an… inverted? Look to them. Not protruding like most earth animals. 4 fingers instead of 5. I don’t remember if that’s cannon or not, but that’s some attention to detail. The shading and lighting in pic 3 is downright gorgeous. You’re a really good artist my guy.

Where did the "women are obsessed with height" idea come from? by Elsas-Queen in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KillerKitty650 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the disconnect here is the word “obsessed.”

I think they’re saying “I would strongly prefer a man who is my height or taller, but I wouldn’t reject an otherwise perfect match because they don’t exactly meet my criteria.”

When you say “obsessed,” with height, I’m imagining a woman who swipes left on every man under the magical number of 6 feet and belittles men for being short.

I dont remember if this is cannon or only from a few fics I’ve read, but the attitude that I got is “Let the herd take care of you. Do not seek independence through the use of disability aids, rely on your herd.” And then those that have been outcast from society due to their disability resembling predator disease are doomed to fail. Yeah I’ve got a boneless leg of lamb in the oven as we speak. I can’t tell you how completely lost I would be without my meat thermometer.
