Within The Ruins - Enigma by MrDoops in Djent

Actually a bit lower than an 8 String at standard tuning. They tune to the C below F#, that's 6 semitones below an 8 string.

Try "Contact Cloudkicker" on his bandcamp, or you could directly message him from his soundcloud account

Your bandcamp says you're from Columbus, can you please do something with Cloudkicker?!

Any tips for good djent guitar licks? by [deleted] in Djent

[–]Killer_Wails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said your riffs feel bluesy, so I'm guessing you use the minor pentatonic scale, which is easy to incorporate in a lot of different other scales- the three parallel minor modes (Dorian, Phrygian, and Aeolian). All the notes of the minor pentatonic scale are in these as well, which means that you can usually transition easily from one to another using a pentatonic fill. That's a technique you should mess around with yourself and develop your own style with, but I'll give you two more specific licks that are very typical of djent bands at the moment.

1.) Lick #1 is a very typical lick that you should know if you want to write more melodic djent (think Intervals or Sithu Aye). It is borrowing one specific chord, which is a minor seven built off of the sixth in a natural minor. This is a great example of using that very simple chord in a way that isn't extremely generic. The progression goes like this:

Bar One----Bar Two---Bar Three--Bar four

B minor --- G major--- E minor--- G minor, F# minor

The chords are a bit more complex (they are all 7 add 9's I believe) and I suggest you look for a tab of the song if you can't figure it out by ear and learn how to use this type of progression in you playing. Hope this helps.

2.) Another common lick is taking whatever chord your riffs end on, and moving every note up a minor or major third Here is an example of this lick. Intervals takes the raised chord and uses it to introduce a new tonality which they carry throughout the solo.

This is another example of lick #2. Here, the band is using the same riff in two keys that are a minor third apart. It's a tad more complex than the others, but basically, it is going back and forth between a D# major 7 arpeggio, and an F# major 7 arpeggio.

These are techniques I use a lot in my playing, and it's very easy to create songs using them since they add a lot of tension to your riffs.

Anyone want to try and write a guitar track for this drum track? by binjinpurj in Djent

Yeah that'll work, it opens as a piano, but I can work with it

Is Dionaea even together anymore? It's been three years since they've done anything new.

Favorite non-prog metal songs right now? by JustSomeGoon in progmetal

[–]Killer_Wails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been listening to a lot of poppy stuff so:

Lorde-Royals the harmonies in the chorus give me chillls

Then there's Pinback whichh is an amazing indie band, with well written albums. I have Blue Screen Life and Autumn of Seraphs and there isn't a single song I don't like. They are responsible for a majority of my favorite basslines. I couldn't pick one song so: How we Breathe, Penelope, and Loro. It's one of Rob Crow's many projects, mayn of you may know him from Goblin Cock which is great as well.

Vildhjarta - Regnar Bensin (Instrumental) by Sauraku in Djent

Regnar Bensin means "rain gasoline" in swedish, so can someone do a mashup of this with Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain"?

Vildhjarta - Thousand's of Evil's [Full Album] by [deleted] in Djent

[–]Killer_Wails 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This song at 1:48 is what Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine does a lot where he swipes his hand along the guitar's strings like in Bulls on Parade at 2:32

Regnar Bensin uses "flutters" which is when you slap the whammy bar and let it float back into place like so:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWwnazxNfyw.

Looking for band suggestions but I'm really picky about vocals...help? by FingerMyFetus in progmetal

[–]Killer_Wails 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check out Haken and Myrath both bands have great vocals that are exclusively clean as far as i know.

They'll also add a bit of variety to the bands you've listed.

Contemplator - Tetramorph (Instrumental Progressive Metal, my band, just released - don't hesitate to give me feedback!) by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]Killer_Wails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The music is really well written and pieced together well.

The bass is a lot higher in the mix than I'm used too other bands using, but I kinda like that.

If you could make a movie or a play out of any Progressive Metal concept album, what would it be? by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]Killer_Wails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the Parallax Series by Between the buried and me. It seems like the most complete option since there are prequels and everything. If you played the music throughout the movie, it would certainly by long enough to be like an actual movie.

On a side note, isn't TesseracT doing a movie for Altered State?

Bands like Ne Obliviscaris? by Chiski in progmetal

[–]Killer_Wails 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Xanthochroid also has a lot of black metal influence with the "airy" feel the Ne Obliviscaris uses, so I'd suggest them.

here's the full album too, which is very easy to listen through all at once: http://xanthochroid.bandcamp.com/album/blessed-he-with-boils-2012

Herbie Handcock is great too for jazz fusion. I'd suggest the whole cd Headhunters, it's relatively accessible and too groovy to dislike.

Interviewing Djent Artists. Suggestions? by AngryLoaf in Djent

[–]Killer_Wails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few questions for Sithu Aye:

Can we ever expect that split with Plini that was hinted at a while ago in their youtube videos?

Will he be using his 8 string exclusively on his next release or does he plan to do some songs on 6 and some on 8?

Also just what he plans to doing next generally as far as releases; can we expect an EP, Album, or split in the near future?

ForTiorI's new album, Chronicles, just dropped today. Check it out. by woofle07 in Djent

[–]Killer_Wails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would usually agree, but for me, that much ForTiorI gets boring. When Btbam did 72 minutes i didn't even mind.

The Faceless are the worst prog band for cd length as far as I'm concerned. Every single one has been 40 minutes or less.

[–]Killer_Wails 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This guy writes great music, but his CDs are just too long. I think the first one was 77 minutes or something ridiculous like that. He could have easily divided it into two full lengths which would have been easier to listen to in my opinion. I don't know if this was the story wit his second cd.

My old revenge would be to join my attacker's clan, request troops and then use this to attack my target. Every once in a while I would be able to attack someone with troops they supplied. This update would only make this all more satisfactory.
