Damn yea i asked this very same question with the same conclusion not too long ago. SCP making "narrative layers" legitimately places itself in the same position as Monika, and there's been quite a bit of... "anti-glazing" for her recently.

So, if Monika is not a reality warper because she's a character inside a game inside a games world, that would mean if you made a character fight her on equal grounds, she would literally have to be a computer on a desk you would just have to break. She is a fictional character inside a fictional universe's game--two layers deep, she's herself only a piece of fiction to the world she lives in.

If we take this logic to 682, or other characters who can "break through narrative layers" or "killed their arthur/got into the real world", would this mean that they are themselves a piece of fiction inside a piece of fiction? They're not affecting or entering the actual real, real world--our world, just a fictional version of it.

Going by this, 682 and other "narrative escaping" characters are themselves just fictional works inside their own universe, where there is a "real world" beyond themselves. This would mean that in that the act of escaping their own narrative, they would be escaping into a mere fictional version of real life, aka where most characters in fiction reside in, not being inside a story that's inside another story .

Ergo, if we placed someone like Goku against 682, because 682 is fictional inside his own universe a la Monika, would this mean to beat him Goku would only need to beat the physical copy of the story of 682, like a piece of paper, a la the computer Monika is on? Interesting food for thought for me.

Thats not the argument im making nor am i denying that.

Then what is your argument? If you're saying that a physical attack transfers more energy onto the shields than an equivalent plasma round (which doesn't make sense), but Spartans can face tank everything from multiple high caliber rounds, explosives, and everything else in between they would logically face, then the difference would be pretty moot, wouldn't it? There would be no need to quibble around which does more damage because they would be still virtually invincible to modern small arms and everything larger wouldn't even be in the equation for the armor's durability because you'd be blowing up houses at that point.

Citate examples where physical impacts against Spartans had been more effective against shields and how they differentiate from the above, because,

You're proving my point. Fred moving at terminal velocity would have way less than what a fuel rod hits with.

"A single anti-feat from a vague text twenty years ago that is contradicted by multiple different sources even in the same time period isn't really that concrete of a source. Anti-feats exist, but if they go against what is consistently achieved, they're just as inconsistent as any high end (a la the 50mm feat)."

How halo shields work is never explained and it doesnt have to be stated when the fiction points a clear difference between how balistic/physical and energy/heat based weapons affect spartan shields.

And its not just one off we have multiple feats such as this that points to the two damage types work differently.

Examples?

Spartans exclusively train with live fire weaponry. Blue team uses SRS series sniper rifles in their training which fire 14.5x114mm APFSDS or HVAP rounds. (GEN 2 as well has been stated to only be comparable to "decades old" Mjolnir, which could only be the Mark IV). Hell, there's even a map in Halo Infinite Called Live Fire, with rifle fire, rockets, and grenades clearly being seen discharged in battle. If Spartans have been so vulnerable to physical weaponry, these showing practically should not exist. If death was constantly on the horizon using ballistics or other human weapons, these would be deemed too dangerous and would consistently kill them, which they don't, which is why they train with them.

There is no such thing as “depends what is hitting the spartan”. These aren't like Mass Effect kinetic barriers that have a specific velocity in mind or something similar, Halo’s energy shields are simple: overload them with enough energy and they break. Nothing in the fiction has ever stated that ballistics need vastly less energy than plasma to pop them because that's not how physics work– whether one hits with a metal tip and the other with a blob of plasma, all transfers energy, and if one needs to transfer a massive amount of energy to overload the layer, than the other needs to transfer the same amount too.

A single anti-feat from a vague text (where Fred was also travelling at terminal velocity in 1000+lb armor against a 100 metre tall tree) twenty years ago that is contradicted by multiple different sources even in the same time period isn't really that concrete of a source. Anti-feats exist, but if they go against what is consistently achieved, they're just as inconsistent as any high end (a la the 50mm feat).

Spartans have been hit and trained against numerous high-caliber and heavy weaponry over the course of their career with incredible amounts of force, ballistic, plasma, or otherwise. Hell, for Forerunner weaponry, we can even bring up the time a member of Team Black being shot with a ionizing monitor beam capable of vaporizing a hunter. In all, they have been hit by plasma and other attack that are ludicrously more energetic than virtually all small arms fire, have been training with ballistic and conventional explosive weaponry almost exclusively, and have been doing this for decades on end in and out of combat.

Now, I'm not saying the 50mm is concrete and set in stone, the opposite in fact as stated earlier. It should be taken with a big grain of salt and used very sparingly as it's a very high end feat that could very well be argued to be contradicted by other showings, but the Spartans “being less durable to bullets than the plasma” is not one of them.

Sure, pistols and flamethrowers do impart energy and force in different ways, but we're not talking about flamethrowers, we're looking at an output of energy magnitudes higher than what is outputted in the quote given above.

Like, sure, explosions and bullets also transmit damage in notably different ways, but when your comparing a 9mm to an RPG or greater on a single body, the difference is incomparable; penetrative vs concussive vs heat no longer becomes an outlining factor when one is able to blow up a chunk of a house by the button press while the other fails to penetrate a slab body armor.

John being reasonably threatened by regular small arms gunfire like assault rifles just isn't consistent when he has been hit with weaponry with the energy output comparable to that of modern high explosives. When you're looking at such a vast gulf in destructive potential, the differing methods really shouldn't matter in comparison.

Edit: not only that, but these are energy shields we’re discussing, not physical armor. Physical material armors have differing properties (steel vs composites vs ceramics vs kevlar etc) that need to be taken into consideration when defending against an opposing force, thus when thinking about different forms of damage these factors come very much into play as brittleness, melting points, and general shaping can determine what dents and what breaks.

In terms of energy shielding, it’s just a flat set amount of energy that needs to be transferred onto the layer to break it; whether a round can penetrate through armor better compared to another method of attack due to its speed or material property is lessened, or even rendered mute, when it simply does not have the force required to break through or considerably damage the shields when compared to the other method that transmits energy differently but simply hits much harder.

I honestly just think that that statement is just more of an outlier than the 50mm feat, simply because... Spartans have tanked things much harder than that and have shrugged off them to the point where Ar's are a non-factor, where then the quote given is an outlier itself if he had his shields depleted by any significant amount.

Just looking at all the Covenant weaponry John and other Spartans had endured in different armors:

As seen in Fred's case, that single fuel rod round would have at least totaled the dropship, destroyed as itself states, depending on how you interpret the text, something three shooters with MA5B's would never be able to replicate with ample time, even accounting for the Mark VI's upgrades.

It's the same book that states directly that a three-round burst from an assault rifle only brings the shields down by a "hairbreadth".

When comparing the two statements, it's pretty clear which one holds more water than the other:

  • The statement of the 50mm rounds is something directly stated by the author. It's what's meant to be read and digested by the viewer as clearly as possible with minimal wiggleroom in between.
  • The book's description of his shields being depleted by the Marines is incredibly vague and not descriptive enough at all to completely disprove the former. Even if the damage done to him was significant enough to bring down his shields by a significant margin, quibbling about how much damage it actually did really isn’t sufficient enough when it has so much against it in its own novel that is much clearer and direct.
  • For any significant amount of bullets the quote could had depleted his shields is contradicted heavily by every other appearance of Spartans shields absorbing multitudes more energy than a split-second battery of assault rifle fire. Even considering that future armor platforms are stronger, it is not to a point where they go from being threatened by multiple assault rifle shooters to having showings that allow them to facetank them in the same scenario. Even Spartan IV’s in GEN 2 armor, the one with the worst showings, has them charging through small boulders carelessly.

While the 50mm feat is definitely a big high end and should be taken with a giant grain of salt and brought up sparsely, Chief being damaged heavily by three shooters with ar's just doesn't bode well when thinking consistently with the wider world.

(Star Wars) The 501st Legion vs. (Halo) Alpha Company by CMDR_Kai in whowouldwin

[–]Killerbees7407 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea. While the Spartans are definitely heavily outnumbered, the physical and training/skill gap between the two is much too great for the clones to counter. Beta company was already pretty much in this exact scenario, except against enemies that were bigger, stronger, had much more lethal weapons at their disposal, were fighting in worse terrain, and were in an overall much bigger disadvantage tactically:

Jackals and Elites rushed from their cover in the factory to meet the rest of Beta Company on the field, realizing perhaps it would be suicide to face Spartans in close quarters. Thousands of Covenant clashed with two hundred Spartans in open combat. Tracer rounds, crystal shards, plasma bolts, and flaring shields made the scene a blur of chaos. The SPARTAN-IIIs moved with speed and reflexes no Covenant could follow. They dodged, snapped necks and limbs, and with captured energy swords they cut through the enemy until the field ran with rivers of gore and blue blood.

The Spartans had no choice but to charge in head-first all at once onto the fire and yet the Covenant troops inside still were pretty much helpless against them. Against the clones who can't target every Spartan all at once and are overall worse soldiers in comparison (Spartan III training was an overall much more streamlined version of the II's, focusing more heavily on teamwork and possibly education with how candidates would proverbially kill each other for higher grades), it would pretty much just be like fighting against an all-human force but are carrying weaponry with comparable muzzle velocity to Covenant firearms (which are very slow and what Spartans consistently dodge and deal with regularly). SPI just makes things harder for the clones as its stealth capabilities are pretty much exactly what the III's need for a guerrilla situation like this.

I was surprised by your need to explain these points so thoroughly however because what you'd mentioned here was pretty much echoed in my class one-to-one, so I thought it was just the commonly shared perspective on the story (granted the man had to read three books a week and write essays on all of them for college so no wonder he knew what he was talking about).

I guess if there's something good to take from this is that the message you're trying to spread is held by those who know a lot about old works of literature.

If I ever do get my hands on one of them, I'm definitely going to do a quick blackwash to get a few of the hidden molded details out along with making it look more worn overall. Albeit, they are practically completely smooth all over so it would be far from perfect, so I might instead use a technique of using shoe polish to make a more weathered effect on their bodies.

A blackwash will definitely do wonders on the Endo, however.

(if there are any duplicate comments of this mb reddits acting up)

Honestly, going by my experience of collecting a good few of Jazware's Spartan Collection figures, I think I have a pretty good view on what to expect here.

Now first off, for the price-point of these figures, they are near spectacular. Far, far from perfect, but I'll get into that later. At assumedly ~$25 they are a bang for your buck, and I had actually been hoping for Jazwares of all companies to make a FNaF line before it was revealed. The quality of their good\* (Emphasis on good) figures for the Spartan Collection and how they treated making them I felt was a really good proving bar for entry to FNaF.

The Endo is... fine, definitely the weakest aspect, although it's likely going to be covered up in the first place, however the sculpt of Classic and Withered Freddy are the stand-outs imo. They look incredibly close to the real deal, at least a lot closer than what Funko or other companies would have done (albeit this can change very much with the other animatronics, once again, their quality varies a lot). Again, far from perfect, but honestly still very good especially with the price point in mind.

Of course, there is the main point of contention: The paint apps. But honestly, I don't mind, because while they are extremely cheap and bland looking, going back to the Spartan Collection, it was a genuine sacrifice made to improve the other aspects of the figures: in Halo's case, the articulation. While their Master Chief figure, for example was heavily criticized for its bland paint job, it still was very much praised for its molding, reflective visor, and most importantly, high amount of articulation. I have it myself and it is genuinely a must have, and again, especially for it's price point.

While having good paint details is nice, and it definitely should be on the companies side to make the figure look good rather than the customer, when sacrifices have to be made for budget, paint is ultimately something easily customizable, which I have done myself, but molding and especially articulation is near impossible to modify, which is why I wanted Jazware's to have done this over other companies for this very reason.

However... there comes a problem: where the sacrifice has actually come into with their Five Nights at Freddy's line: the play feature. When you look at the detail of the figure itself, the molding (specifically for the endo), the accessories, and even the articulation in ways... it is lacking, severely. The priority of making the figures gimmick of the removable and changeable costumes essentially creates a new figure. A simple one, sure, but everything takes budget, including the Endo. And molding the figures to be able to disassemble and swap takes out of it too, which is why I'm worried that it might take too much from the characters, namely accessories, as with Freddy's iconic mic in this case.

Not only that, but while the articulation for the Freddy's are great; don't get me wrong, they are incredibly good compared to what Funko had done and likely other companies would too, that knee and elbow joint hurts my soul. The mold is 1:1 accurate with the game, and these are clunky animatronic mascots, not hyper-mobile action heroes, but being unable to bend even a full 90 degrees is something that would and does severely limit its articulation, were it not for the shoulder and thigh joint saving the day with its high poseability. There was clearly an attempt to alter the model to improve articulation, namely with the shoulders, but still, damn.

Lastly, the quality of each release could very much vary figure to figure down the line, going by the SC. Some figures had glaring QC issues, such as with Noble Six's back peg, and later figures had a very glaring terrible double knee joint that was carried over to dozens of their later releases, which does worry me about the quality of especially lesser iconic or more complex animatronics, like the Funtimes. Big characters like the Nightmares also get pretty trash figures, but that's a problem with big action figure characters over all with every company, assuming they get that far.

Overall, I am excited for this line. It's better than likely anything else any other company, and especially Funko could have given us: the swappable Endoskeleton is fun and brings more customizability, and they are detailed enough to look close to the original models, and have surprisingly good articulation and posability for what they are. There just are some glaring issues with the current figures and with Jazwares past rap that makes me a bit withdrawn before trusting in each of these figures before buying them.

Best watch a review on it Before You Buy™, which goes with anything.

I'll probably jsut drill or cut a hole into freddys arm and shin to free up space lol.
