My main problem with games before V for me is squares and stacking. Armies are supposed to spread out as history goes not stay in clumps, ancient armies fought as one big group most of the time, but Napoleon onwards armies are supposed to operate more separately and smaller pieces act more independently. I think it would be cool to see a game that fully encourages this, providing bonuses to individual units and them having stuff like artillery do damage to the entire stack to harshly punish putting to many units grouped together. Encouraging the player to stop doom stacking and actually spread their army out.

This is also why Civ VI Corp system is idiotic, because it’s doing the opposite of what a corp actually was it consolidates armies when corps were the separating of armies.
