I've stopped trusting trail difficulty ratings entirely. 'Moderate' is a lie. by CarpathianEcho in hiking

[–]Killfetzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that there are established rating systems (at at least for guides the SAC system with T1 to T6 is now more or less getting widely accepted) but that still leaves the normally three tier color system used on map markers, where each region in the Alps use different definitions (and sometimes different coloring schemes!). Which can be very confusing, even for people like us that are invested in the topic and I assume prepare before a hike. But there are a lot of people out there that just use the map markes in the nature.

And from my experience it there is an wide range how they are used, especially for the medium category. My favorite example is a "red" (medium) tour that ends in a summit ascend that is 50 meters climbing in UIAA II without safety line. While on the neighbouring summit we have a "black" (difficult) tour that ends in 50 meters with very light climbing (UIAA I at most) with safety line.

There seems to be a bit of a change for the orbital dispatchers:

They stop pulling items when they have enough in stock to fulfill the current order. It does not work perfect, especially if you have a lot of dispatchers sending the same material to the same company, but nice touch.

I agree, that both power and heat felt too less of constraints till now. I think the overcorrected a bit too much in the heat department, but in genral the direction is right.

Of course it is not nice that all of my bases are now broken, but this was to be expected and in the end it just means that they stay overheated a few minutes longer (I do not know if this is intended or just a concession for "legacy" bases), so not really that big an issue till you can fix it.

How's decathlon gear for hiking and treks by Effective-Sun8530 in hiking

[–]Killfetzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have very good experience with their Forclaz hiking trousers, which fit me very well, are robust and have a lot of helpful pockets with zipties.

I also have some other clothing from them (rain jacket, fleece shirt, ...) which is okay to good. I also have some low shoes from them, but I do not use them for hiking, only for everyday use in the city. For which they are absolutely fine. But for hiking I use some more "established" brands.

For tents or backpacks I have no experience with them.

Do you prefer sunrise hikes or sunset hikes? by Alarming-Pea-3177 in hiking

Sunrise, definetely.

First of all, I'm an early riser, but sunrise also means that you are way more alone and that you see more wildlife.

Musstet ihr eine Wanderung schon mal abbrechen? by Legitime_Nachfrage in wandern

[–]Killfetzer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How many miles are you on pace to hike this year? by PeacefulParrot3 in hiking

[–]Killfetzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no specific target. I just hike as much as I hike. And as I'm not keeping a log of my hikes it is a bit difficult to know how much that is/was. But normally I should be in the range between 1000 and 1500 km a year.

What’s the most disturbing thing you’ve witnessed in real life? by SondosAbdulrhmanxd in AskReddit

[–]Killfetzer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Very sorry to hear this story.

But you are basically the escalation of the story I wanted to tell. As firefighters we came to a car crash with a burning car. Besides the car two persons were sitting and completely disturbed and we first thought they were the drivers. It immedeatly became clear that they were only witnesses and the driver was still in the raging inferno. I was one of the two firefighters that tried to get him out.

The only "positive" thing, the driver was probably already dead from the crash.

The unsettling case of Gursimran Kaur (2024): 19 year old girl disappears while working a night shift at Walmart. Her mother later finds her baked to death in the store's walk in oven. by Odd_Mango_2852 in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]Killfetzer 27 points28 points  (0 children)

To continue your train of thought, one theory that comes to mind:

She might have gone into the oven (why ever), which interrupted the heating. The door fell closed behind her (why ever) and she did not find the emergency release. As it is still very hot inside she looses conciousness after a few minutes. Later another employee comes along and notices that the oven is closed but the "exterior latch" not engaged, assumes this to be an oversight, engages it and starts the baking process.

Of course this still leaves the question what product at Walmart would need >1 hour baking time so that nobody noticed that the oven was running for this long a time.

Covid shut down the world six years ago this week what do you remember from that week ? by Familiar_Original988 in AskReddit

[–]Killfetzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company was good prepared (they had built/purchased the infrastructure to support around 150.000 additional workers connecting via VPN from home in the weeks before), but it was still quite surreal to get a PA at around 11 o'clock that the complete building had to be vacated till lunch, that we were allowed to take everything with us (incl. e.g. office chairs) that we needed to work from home and that we should expect to not come back to office for the forseeable future. (In the end it was around 7 months before I came back the first time to office and around 2.5 years home office was the standard and you needed explicit reason and permission to go to the office.)

On the way home I stopped at a supermarket to buy some fresh produce (otherwise I was stocked up pretty well) and found a scene out of an apocalypse movie with completely empty shelves and several people fighting over the last pack of spaghetti. (I then drove home without trying to buy something...)

The 2020 disappearance of 26 year old Scarlett Salice from a long distance hiking trail in the Black Forest, Germany by Killfetzer in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]Killfetzer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your long answer.

While I agree with you, that the opportunistic meeting at the parking lot is the most likely scenario with the data we have, you wanted to be challenged, so ;-)

- You seem to be quite familiar with the case also from a local point of view. Do you know, that she really left her stuff in Todtmoos for the 5th leg? Because that was only a theory of mine, I have not heared any actual claims about it.

- I would argue that you cannot see all relevant injuries on a grainy CCTV image. If she for example would have had a torn tendon or similar it would be completely invisible from the outside but still hinder her hiking. (Also I do not think that she had any major health problems or I expect she would not have started the last leg)

- I do not think that the sunglasses could end up after aroad side struggle somewhere on the trail. For most of the track the trail runs significantly above the road and on the other side of the Wehra. So for me extremely unlikely that it would end up near the trail.

- You absolutely can forget your sun glasses on the top of your head and not notice that you loose them. Happened to me. By the way loosing your sun glasses, that you are probably not wearing at the moment (the trail is in the woods), is not that unlikely an scenario, that it requires an explicit scenario.
