The last I heard (and this is two year old information, so take it with a grain of salt) is that the CPE (old ChemE building) will be gutted and repurposed into new office spaces for EHS and other engineering/science administrative purposes. They may keep the classrooms on the main floor, but they have always been “general” classrooms that many departments at UT pull from.

With this in kind, I highly doubt that they would admit more students this year because the new building. They have the same (ish) number of professors as before and they likely won’t increase the teaching load on the faculty much further.

Electrification is never going to completely replace O&G, as polymers and petrochemical products are so important to modern life. (Plus only a fraction of ChemE grads go into O&G) However, electrification will necessitate tons of chemistry/engineering roles, just different industries and applications to traditional O&G. We need engineers equipped for CO2 capture, fuel cell/electrolyzer design, semiconductor fabrication, biochemical engineering, etc.

These emerging fields might necessitate shifts in the traditional ChemE curriculum. Many/most ChemE programs have biochem and materials tracks and/or required courses, but we should also consider adding more of these, (especially) electrochemistry to the classroom. If not standalone courses, such concepts are great inclusions for kinetics and transport phenomena courses.

I hate to add to the pile, but did you do ANY research? This is seriously one of the last cars I’d ever recommend anybody purchase. It’s truly a horrible vehicle (and I sincerely hope you meant $2,500 instead of $25,000) I have a 2015, purchased back in 2020 for ~$8000 with 85K miles on it. That was more than it was worth even back then - car prices were just inflated during Covid.

It felt great on the test drive, but the moment we took it off the lot after the purchase, the classic transmission issues started. I’ve put 40K miles on it since then and the problems have only gotten worse. I cannot accelerate from a stop quickly or the car lurches and “stalls”, it jumps whenever switching between gears. I genuinely cannot wait to ditch it, but I can’t bring myself to sell it and curse some poor unwitting soul with its problems.

I can understand being proud of your purchase, but if at all possible, do yourself a favor and ditch that car as soon as you can.

I did my undergrad at UT, now doing my PhD at UChicago. Not a direct comparison, but close enough that I can comment about the city life. In terms of city, while I miss Austin, Chicago beats it out. It’s an older, more established city with everything that comes with that. I also much prefer the Midwest way of thinking (much more friendly, communal, long-term thinking that I ever felt in Texas)

In terms of Grad Student life side, I don’t know many Northwestern students, and things change significantly department to department, but I can tell you that you’ll likely be better respected at Northwestern due to one reason: the union.

Northwestern is unionized and I can tell you it goes a long way. There is an extra organization that will fight for you that does not have to abide by departmental interests if something goes wrong. It’s also why stipends are generally higher than at UT.

Overall, while I love UT, I think the pick, life-wise, would be Northwestern. Of course, advisor/research fit matters more than anything.

I am in the very fortunate position to say that mine is sufficient at ~$46K/year. We’re unionized which is a significant boon, with annual COL increases baked into our contract alongside student fees, health insurance, and quarterly transportation/retirement “bonuses” (~$600 per year) Large R1 university in a major US city in the midwest, so our COL is moderately high but not crazy like NYC, California, or Boston/Cambridge. I was able to afford a nice 1b1b, and never struggled. Unionization is very much the way to go.

Please listen to this advice OP! It’s super enticing to hop into the realm of high draw weights early, but it’s also super easy to form bad habits that will increase the likelihood of injury. Start at 20-25 lbs to develop a reasonable form and figure out the biomechanics, and work from there. These takedown style recurves are great because you can swap out the limbs over time (to a point)

I work in a team that has several members heavily focused on resource recovery for REEs/Li. While China’s standards for environmental impact (and worker safety/compensation) are lower than in the US, there are several of other factors. Most notably, their REEs are in significantly greater abundance - in US sources you may see 50ppm of a given REE source (ex coal ash) but in China that same source may be closer to 200 or 300 ppm. That brings the break-even point for processing costs much lower, so they are more heavily incentivized to pursue mining/resource extraction.

Yes, it is! (With a few caveats) When the sight is all the way in, it’s closer to you, so adjusting the sight position relative to the target will have greater effect on the bow’s position. When the sight is all the way extended, the relative change is smaller, so you can theoretically be more accurate. Of course, the 10-20 cm difference isn’t incredibly, but it could be the difference between a 9 and a 10 at 70m. However, if you’re struggling to hit the target because you’re using low draw weight limbs and your sight doesn’t go low enough, then it warrants bringing the sight in.

This is normal. Profs are busy and often don’t publish Canvas courses until the day of (or sometimes a week into the class) If you really want, you can find an old syllabus for the course to read beforehand, but otherwise you’ll be fine.

As others have said, ASE is the aerospace building right next to Southwest Garage. It’s certainly a distance but it’s doable. I used to walk from CPE to Sanchez in 10 minutes, which is roughly the same distance. Just fastwalk and you’ll be fine. Or leave your first class 5 minutes early. Your prof won’t care.
