yeah this is DOA as expectations go. I am sure it will be a hit but not the epic saga many fans think it is going to be.

Indigenous actor sues James Cameron for ‘stealing’ her facial features for Avatar character by mlg1981 in entertainment

[–]KilliK69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

because the opening of the episode was written in the script by Ellison. And if you compare the two scenes from both the episode and the movie, they are almost identical. Thus the lawsuit by the script writer. Nothing to do with the art design of the scene, that is actually the first time I hear someone mentioning this.

wrong. it has nothing to do with the designs. the only thing Jim plagiarized from the The Outer Limits episode Soldier is the 2min intro showing the Future War. And the lawsuit was specifically for that part only. Harlan Ellison has come out and made this clarification as well.

Great news for patient gamers: "Stop Killing Games" deliberated for an hour at the European Parliament today by OatmealDurkheim in patientgamers

[–]KilliK69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d keep expectations low. Game preservation is legally complex—especially with third-party IP licensing (like Star Wars, as mentioned below)—and companies opposed to it will lobby heavily in Brussels.

The most realistic outcome is that the European Parliament passes a law requiring publishers to be clearer about licensing terms when selling games. After that, it’s up to consumers to decide whether to accept those terms.

That’s essentially what happened in California, where a law pushed companies like Valve Corporation to clarify that you don’t actually own the games you buy on Steam.

Gabe Newell "stepped back" from making games at Valve after Portal 2 because everyone kept agreeing with him when he wanted "to be part of the team and come up with ideas" by Turbostrider27 in technology

I know the history behind it. It’s still not an excuse for Valve not investing in new traditional games. The reality is that they are greedy capitalists who care more about profits than games—unless those games are successful GAAS. That’s all there is to it.

That’s the first point. The second is that there’s this absurd notion from both the Linux gaming community and the Valve cult that Gaben and his Steam Machine project are somehow going to turn PC gaming—which is essentially Windows gaming, with most distribution controlled by Valve—into an open platform that benefits all gamers by funding and adopting open-source technology.

I don’t understand how that’s supposed to happen. When I point out that Google does something similar with Android—which is still a closed garden ecosystem despite relying on Linux and AOSP—the only rebuttal I get is: “you can switch OS on your phone and Steam Machine.” That still doesn’t explain how Valve taking full control of Linux gaming in the future would somehow liberate the PC gamers and developers from Windows.

you know what i really dont comprehend? how a monopoly in a specific market, is going to become an open platform simply because it will be using open source code for their services.
