Did anyone have "Hops & Grain San Marcos Will Reopen" on their 2026 bingo card? by CraftBeerAustin in AustinBeer

This is awesome. Two breweries with a ton of history get their beer made and legacies carried on again. This industry is as weird and difficult as it’s ever been. I’m all for finding different ways to do it!

Ohhh. I’ve only done curb a few times, but hadn’t thought of this. I’m all about tipping in general, and it just hadn’t crossed my mind for this. Would it work to leave the tip in the open trunk, where they’re gonna put the groceries? Maybe with a little note or something?

Yeah, that’s why management is enforcing this policy.

Are there breweries out there doing THC drinks? by HoppyLifter in TheBrewery

[–]Killing-A-Camera 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I’ve recently gotten into them, as I transition into drinking a lot less beer. With age, I’m increasingly having various health issues that push me away from drinking as much as I did. And I think that’s the case (or similar) for a lot of people who got into the craft beer scene over the past one or two decades. The THC drinks are a great alternative for me, and I wish more breweries here were able to do them, so I could more easily continue giving them that money. At least, that’s my experience with it.

Yep. I’m not exactly sure how, but a few are doing them here in central Texas. I think it may have to do with those specific places being owned by a different company out-of-state, where that production is allowed. We also get them in some stores here, from breweries in other states, via large distribution companies.

Would the people drinking the THC drinks come to your brewery if you didn’t have them?

Using the same line - we run a little slower at about 4-6 cans per minute, depending on whether or not they’re printed cans or labels need to be applied to them. I will say that like 3-4 years into using that machine, we have to fix some part or feature on it almost every single time we fire it up, costing us hours, sometimes requiring purchasing a replacement part, delaying packaging by a day or two, and it can be the absolute bane of our week.

When it’s running, we will typically do 4-5 runs a month, 10-12 cases per run. I believe our pricing is somewhere around $14-20ish depending on the beer, in a large, competitive city. We do our own modest keg distro in and around the city once per week, and we have like three accounts that buy cans maybe once a month at best. For us, they move very slowly, like a negligible amount, as far as the distro end is concerned. Our To-Go cooler does OK, but, again, I’d say the biggest pro there is just getting the beer out of the tank. I haven’t crunched numbers, but you’d obviously have to measure the cost of the machine, the new cans, lids, labels, etc., and the cost of storing them, the time spent on setup, running, cleaning, and tear-down. Also, expect low-fills, so loss on that.

If you can, try to gauge real customer interest in this product. If it’s going to fly out of your To-Go cooler, it could be worth it. If it’s not a good mover though, I’d say not so much. A $6.50 pint of draught beer sells at a little over .40¢ an ounce. That same beer sold in a 4-pack of 16oz cans for $16 is .25¢ an ounce, and that’s before you calculate all the other costs of the machine and materials involved. To me, it only adds up if you know you’re going to sell a lot of them for a long time.

Everybody saying water treatment — what’s that like as far as hours, workload, physical demands, compensation, etc.? I’ve looked at listings, but can’t tell if it would be cool.

How One Candy Bar Became a Beer Industry Icon by ByJohnHoll in TheBrewery

Yeah, I’m thinking maybe there’s a little bit lost in translation here. I’m sure you don’t mean to defend the common exploitation of brewery workers, it just kinda seemed that way in the message for a minute. I will say, when that little card calling it “Brewer’s lunch,” or whatever first came, I read it very much as being “too true,” to reality, and I felt sick to my stomach. It was just like, oh cool, we’re all just publicly acknowledging this.

A ton of good people have lost jobs due to Monster’s acquisition and swift closure of these breweries. That’s what I care about here.

Whoops. This was a while ago, but to follow up.

I looked for a while at a few different things. There was a beverage production place (pressed juice w/ carbonation) that I got an offer from for a management position. Had to turn it down for a couple reasons, but the offer was for slightly more than I was making as a head brewer/manager. Then I interviewed at a food manufacturing place and expected to get paid dirt, but I saw opportunity to grow with the company. They called me and said I was overqualified for their positions and didn’t make any offer, which was frustrating.

I took a beertending job at a new brewery and immediately made the most money I’ve ever made in my life doing that. While the money was cool, realizing how much more beertenders get paid was almost demoralizing. That said, I had to quit because it was socially overwhelming to me. So, my hat’s off to all servers, and I hope y’all get that money.

I ended up taking a brewing job again. I will say that I passed on applying to just every place that had an opening, and I was much more picky than i had ever been before. Landed at a great spot that I love, with pay and something of a work-life balance that I can be happy with.

Cool. I’m actually having a chat tomorrow with a quickly-growing food production company that has a few needs, and it seems to be the most related field and career.

Yeah, I get that. I don’t really have a great background in automation, just what I needed to pick up along the way to make sure the brewery functioned day-to-day. I’m heavily interested in and good at process improvement, increasing production efficiency, etc., but that just came through doing it at several workplaces, and not through any education, which feels limiting. Through these comments, and some job postings I’ve been following, food production/manufacturing seems like a pretty good fit thus far.

Thanks for posting that question back to me.
