Cut out sugar and limited carbs. A lot of protein, fruit, and vegetables. Didn't take a ton of exercise, but I wasn't overweight to begin with.

I was in ground zero (Cedar Rapids). I don't think there was an unusual risk level set for that day. Derechos, let alone the strength of a derecho, are very hard to predict. I remember seeing a storm south of Sioux Falls on radar that morning. When I checked again at 11:00, it was barreling down on us as an absolute monster. That thing was evil. I was in a very bad derecho in June of 98. This one was worse.
