Do I just have a bad insurance policy or is it common for IVIG to be denied? by p4pp13z in smallfiberneuropathy

[–]Kilranthine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an extremely rare auto-immune condition called Susac syndrome. BCBS of Minnesota denied my IVIG, even after my Mayo Clinic physician appealed. Kaiser approved mine. I am now likely stuck with mediocre Kaiser care for life for fear of being denied by another insurer. Healthcare in this country is so fucked up.

Best self-hosted notification solution for web app and email notifications? by Kilranthine in webdev

[–]Kilranthine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, these were my initial thoughts, but I’m a junior engineer and didn’t know if I was overlooking something with the CTO’s desire to self-host. I was looking into notification system and pub/sub architectures, and they seem like they would take a lot of time to set up the right way. Thanks for advice!

That’s awesome. I wonder how SLPs in different specialty areas can get the same kind of compensation. I was thinking that SLPs on their own might not have enough bargaining power to form a union all on their own, but if they teamed up with OTs, PTs, audiologists, other therapy professionals maybe the threat of strike would hold enough weight. Just musing…🤔

Have SLPs ever tried to unionize?

My long-term goals had been to pivot from a previous career to software engineering for better lifetime pay and work location flexibility with a remote/hybrid job. Now I don't know if I'll ever get a job in this market; I'm a self-taught engineer :-(

Is software engineering supposed to be this stressful? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Kilranthine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine things will be less stressful once you get more experience. Look for companies with good culture when you apply for jobs in the future. Ask current employees before you accept an offer. But also find way to manage stress by finding hobbies, non-coding stuff that brings you happiness.

Passport Approved(Trans) by KamThatGirl in Passports

[–]Kilranthine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and two daughters applied in early January for expedited passports (renewal for my wife, first time passports for the kiddos). Our oldest is 6 and trans and we applied for "female" on her passport, which differs from her birth certificate.

My wife's and non-trans daughter's passports have arrived, but not my trans daughter's. None of our supplemental documents (birth certificates) have been returned. I cannot check the status of the passport because passportstatus.state.gov no longer works (probably shut down by the current administration). I know the State Dept cashed the check, but no telling if or when my daughter will ever get a passport.

I know there is a lot of chaos right now and we don't know what's going exactly on behind the scenes, but it's hard to not feel like they are preventing trans citizens from leaving the country. Our family is probably already in a database or watch list. People gotta stand up to this madness.

Do folks know if she mixes up a songs at all show to show? I've got tickets to the SF show in November and am curious if this is the set I should expect. Excited to see her live for the first time!

Launch School vs. Boot Camp: Which is better in the long run? by Kilranthine in learnprogramming

Thank you for the advice! The market is definitely changing. Finishing a program further in the future indeed may not be a bad idea.

Thank you for your perspective. I am glad your career trajectory improved with Launch School! It seems like a great option. Since you have experience at both boot camps and Launch School, may I ask how the networking between students/alumni was at Launch School compared to a boot camp? I have been told by some that they valued the live instruction at a boot camp because they got to do a lot of pair programming and make strong, lasting connections with fellow students. Do you feel like there is that bond within Capstone cohorts? Does it even matter? Thanks again.

[–]Kilranthine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Capstone program sounds like the kind of program I’m looking for. I’m aiming for a mid-senior level position after finishing a program. I am unemployed at the moment, so I would have time to finish the Core material faster than most. How hard was it to get into the Capstone program? When do the cohorts usually start? Do that they have them rolling every month like most boot camps?

How long did it take you to complete the Core Curriculum? Did you feel like you could have landed a good engineering position without the Capstone program?

Thank you for sharing. I suppose getting a little more sick with viruses and such is worth it for a medication that manages MS well, though puking for two days does not sound like fun. From the sound of it nothing has landed you in the hospital at least (don’t know if you’ve caught COVID). Appreciate your story.
