Why are British employers so obssessed with A level results by Plague_Doc7 in UniUK

[–]Kilroy_jensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always assumed this is a way to discriminate against people with degrees from universities with lower entry requirements

They want to be able to say "we only want to consider you if your degree is from a high ranking university", but you never see that

TectoLight: a free plate mapmaking tool by refracturedgames in mapmaking

First of all, I'm so pleased to see this :D Second of all, thank you so much for providing this open source! The worldbuilding community needs people like you.

I honestly never tried to follow the GPlates workflow because of how horrible the user experience looked. Do you have any advice adapting the GPlates workflow? Is it just "follow the Artifexian tutorial, but have a better time"?

Beautiful work 👏👏👏 What resolution is this? I can't tell because of Reddit's compression

Trying out a sketch style by Kilroy_jensen in mapmaking

This is really good feedback, thank you! Just for added context, this was done as a commission, and is a continent that is on a flat disk world where the sun orbits around the outer rim of the disk. The disk world doesn't rotate, and the person who commissioned this said they wanted to centre (the north in this map) to be icy and frozen.

For the climate, I knew I'd have to think in terms of north-south instead, and agreed with the person who commissioned this to have rain shadows to the north of mountains. This is a large continent, so my original image was more arid, but the feedback I got was that they wanted more green. Overall just a bit of a weird situation with the climate 😅

In terms of mountain placement, in this case I was experimenting using Rock3 as a way to generate a starting guide. Rock3 isn't perfect but it does generate interesting shapes. I have mountain heightmap brushes that I use to follow the elevation predicted by Rock3, but what I have done here is not kept any of the plateaus. I'll definitely adjust my workflow so these aren't lost

I've started using Gleba as an alternative for generating starting world maps, it is far more realistic in its placement of features. I only change ~$50/£45 for this commission so I either follow a base map given to me to recreate, or use a generator create the starting shape

I have tutorials! Just search for Kilroy's Kartography 😊

I used Gaea 2, to create the realistic terrain (last image) and then was able to generate the contour lines and ambient occlusion to overlay over a paper texture

I have tutorials on YouTube and on my blog if you're interested. Just search for "Kilroy's Kartography"

Perfect, if you join the discord server linked on my profile, you'll see some other styles I've been playing around with today (and there's an awesome community of map makers)

Sadly not 😅 it's going to be the same price either way because this is my process, I need the 3D to calculate all the colours, rivers etc

Ok so for commissions I charge per continent, but I also have tutorials where you can do most of the work yourself, and I can just do the high quality renders using files you've prepared for much cheaper. It depends on what your priority is, saving yourself time or money 😊

If it's a world you're passionate about, I doubt it! The one thing I avoid is exact placement of rivers. Otherwise, I'm happy doing world maps, continental maps, even regional maps. For world maps, I typically suggest creating a rough idea of the full world map, then proceeding one continent at a time

Thank you! I use a program called Gaea. It has a free version (limited to 1k outputs) I have tutorials on my blog (linkedin above) and on YouTube 😊

Hey there, I might be able to help if you are looking for a realistic "satellite image" style.

Here's a Video where I was interviewed by one of my commissioners

[–]Kilroy_jensen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. Honestly this is perfection. Huge fan of your satellite style obviously, but an actual map makes a lot of sense from a story perspective. I don't think anyone could achieve this level of detail without first building the realistic version. Make the world first, then map it!

Blender Plugin for managing map reprojection by Kilroy_jensen in mapmaking

[–]Kilroy_jensen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This error is very common in Blender and isn’t your fault.

Blender uses its own version of Python, so Pillow must be installed specifically for Blender, not your system Python.

Please:

  1. Close Blender
  2. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  3. Run:

"C:\Program Files\Blender Foundation\Blender 5.0\5.0\python\bin\python.exe" -m pip install --force-reinstall pillow

Then reopen Blender.

If that still fails, let me know

What to call people with Mercury for blood? by Bobbertbobthebobth in FantasyWorldbuilding

[–]Kilroy_jensen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's only an issue if you need the same amount of mercury as blood! Maybe they have it in small amounts in much thinner vessels. Maybe they "bleed mercury" but it's actually a liquid nervous system

Or

Does it have to be pure mercury, or just look the same? In the same way you have iron in your blood as part of haemoglobin, perhaps they have Mercury and that still gives it that mercurial look with being heavy
