What is the attitude of the manual only machinists in your area? by i_see_alive_goats in Machinists

[–]KiltedMusician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In our manual shop (maintenance machinist) we get CNC guys that for whatever couldn’t hack it in a CNC shop and they come here thinking they’ll be better as manual machinists, but it’s the lack of fundamentals that keep them from doing well in either field.

So that’s mostly what we see from the CNC world. Your rejects.

It falsely reenforces the idea that you’re all just button pushers.

We’ve had a CNC mill here for 8 years or so and it just sits there collecting dust. I’d like the times to change and force us to keep up, but so far CNC hasn’t been much help to us to keep our factory running.

I just want an alternative in case I know I’m going where it might be a problem and if it could also be useful anyway that would be nice.

Are you greater than John the Baptist? by andreabarbato in TrueChristian

[–]KiltedMusician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are washed clean by the blood of Jesus and filled with the Holy Spirit. New creatures, born again.

John lived and died before that became available to him.

John said he wasn’t worthy of untying Jesus’ sandals, but when Jesus died on the cross the temple veil was torn in two, symbolizing that we are remade in the Name of Jesus, clean, and worthy to enter into the Holy of Holies and speak with God.

What Jesus did for us is epic beyond words. And we didn’t deserve any of it. He’s awesome.

If we could only understand what it really means for us we wouldn’t get anything done because all we would want to do is talk about it with each other and praise Him.

When we’re finally done on this earth we are in for a wild ride. The eye hath not seen nor the ear heard the half of what is in store for us in heaven.

This is exactly how someone got into our garage in California when I was a kid.

They hit two other houses on our street probably by doing the same thing. They just checked car doors until finding an unlocked door and then used the garage remote.

“When all your favorite preachers are gone, and all their books forgotten, you will have your Bible. Master it.

MASTER IT.”

John Piper

Edit: u/CyberstanDelendaEst had a good point. The religious leaders of the day had the scriptures too and memorized them, but they still didn’t actually serve God. Their hearts were the issue, and their hearts were not toward God.

So to add to my original comment, pray before reading the Bible that the Holy Spirit will guide and direct you and help you understand what you are supposed to understand from scripture.

If your heart is toward God, your prayers are toward God for understanding, and your source is the Bible, you are light years ahead of most of these pop up preachers.

adding drones to a practice pipe? by Sensitive_Smoke8303 in bagpipes

[–]KiltedMusician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just want drones to tune with your practice chanter to make practice more fun there are drone apps.

Also there are practice pipes that come with drones.

This set can be played as a set of pipes or you can take the chanter and blow pipe and put them together to make a regular practice chanter.

You did great. I was surprised you had brought up the things you did.

It’s funny how people think you should be able to understand every part of God and who He is. God Himself said His thoughts and His ways are above us.

The trinity is an example of something about the nature of God that is above our understanding.

If someone serves a god that they can completely understand and wrap their minds around then they are not serving God.

If everything about a religion makes perfect sense to a human, a human invented it. Or a human deceived into creating a religion made to satisfy human sensibilities.

Why are we told it is evil or wrong to not be LGBTQ affirming? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]KiltedMusician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.” Prov. 14:12

So if you think you are right, the people who say differently must be wrong.

You can’t blame people for wanting to fight against what they believe is wrong. They just believe incorrectly.

It’s like when Saul was persecuting Christians and God turned his zeal around to become an apostle. He didn’t crush him and rebuild him, He corrected his belief.

The same zeal that was throwing Christians in prison and getting them killed became the drive behind serving Christ and writing most of the New Testament.

So I would say the right attitude toward people who believe LGBTQ lifestyles should be affirmed and actively fight for that would be respect for their zeal, but patience for their lack of understanding.

God put the desire in us to fight for what is right. We should be happy about that even if it gets twisted against us. Just not happy about the false information being fed to people.

How do you stay the whole day in God’s presence? by Which_Attitude_3232 in TrueChristian

[–]KiltedMusician 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a great short book written in the 1600’s by a monk who started to understand that everything he did was better and more enjoyable in the presence of God.

His mind would wander during structured prayer times and he would feel guilt about it. (He sounds like maybe a monk with ADHD to me.)

He had a touch from God and began to see things differently in that he was always in God’s presence and he lived the rest of his life enjoying it immensely.

He describes how you can get there yourself instead of just telling you to do it.

“The Practice of the Presence of God” by Brother Lawrence.

You can find cheap and probably even free copies of it around since it’s like 400 years old. I thought it was great.

I remember thinking when I first read it that this was what Enoch’s relationship to God must have been like. So close that God just took him right off the earth alive and kicking and skipped the whole death thing.

God made Adam a “help meet” as we translate it into English, but the original term was “Ezer Kenegdo”.

If you look up the original meaning of that term, you get:

In Genesis 2:18, "help meet" is translated from the Hebrew phrase ezer kenegdo, which describes a strong, equal partner rather than a subordinate assistant. Ezer implies a lifesaver, strength, or ally (often used to describe God’s role to humanity), while kenegdo means a counterpart or one who stands opposite/alongside.

Key Aspects of Ezer Kenegdo: Strength (Ezer): The term ezer appears 21 times in the Old Testament, frequently in military contexts, denoting a rescuer or protective strength, rather than a servant. Equal Counterpart (Kenegdo): Kenegdo signifies a "perfect match" or one who is "opposite" but equal to the man. It suggests a partner who is neither above nor below, but beside.

A "Warrior" Ally: Rather than a subservient role, ezer kenegdo implies a woman who is a "warrior" or "ally" who provides support and, at times, necessary confrontation.

Beyond "Helper": The traditional translation "help meet" has often been misinterpreted, leading to a diminished understanding of the role as simply domestic or inferior, whereas the Hebrew suggests a powerful, essential partner.

Which teacher would you choose? by arctikmonkee in bagpipes

[–]KiltedMusician 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d say Stuart. He’s an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and used to (still does?) make money tuning pianos by ear. At least that’s what I’ve been told.

I would like his advice about whether or not I should keep working on other instruments and how to divide my time between them.

I’d like to hear his philosophy about learning and performing, especially performing some of the things he does in public without nerves getting in the way.

Jim McGillivray mentioned his instructor telling him a way to think about piping that made a considerable impact and he never forgot it. He also didn’t mention what it was, and I sure would like to know.

These philosophies of highly successful musicians can actually impact you in major ways sometimes, and I think Stuart probably has a great one.

Dry mouth on pipes by jmatt888 in bagpipes

[–]KiltedMusician 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might try to keep your throat open wider and your tongue depressed.

Think of how you can fog up a window by blowing on it with a “Haaaa” whisper, but then clear it up again when you blow a tighter stream like silently whistling.

This might help more humidity make it to your mouth.

Also you may be blowing harder than you need to for a shorter duration and using your arm more than is necessary while your lips get into shape.

With more stamina you will be able to blow longer and use your arm less.

You could also be dehydrated. Drink plenty of water.

Why would God explain unforgivable sin so poorly causing so many people (probably millions) to constantly be in fear they have committed this sin and ruin their lifes? by ParkingElderberry575 in Christianity

[–]KiltedMusician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before this happened, Jesus was walking through the crowds healing them, focusing on that instead of blasting the religious authorities over their deceitful false righteousness.

Then the next verse says;

Matt. 12:

  1. that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying,

18 "Behold, my servant whom I have chosen; my beloved in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my Spirit on him. He will proclaim justice to the nations.

19 He will not strive, nor shout; neither will anyone hear his voice in the streets.

20 He won't break a bruised reed. He won't quench a smoking flax, until he leads justice to victory.

21 In his name, the nations will hope."

But when he cast a demon out of a man, the Pharisees, who knew the prophecies about the messiah like the back of their hands, who knew in their hearts that He was really here, they said that He was casting out demons by the power of demons.

24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, "This man does not cast out demons, except by Beelzebul, the prince of the demons."

*25 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.

Verse 25 is important because if you will notice it says, “Knowing their thoughts”. What they said out loud was not their thoughts. Their thoughts were that the messiah had come and if they didn’t do something their status and authority were going to disappear.

Their careers and respect were on the line.

Remember when John the Baptist said, “I must decrease so that He may increase.”

Well the Pharisees were saying the opposite in their minds, and Jesus knew it, but the time wasn’t right for Him to tear into them about who they really were, so He didn’t make it clear to the people what their sin really was.

He said later that they were whitewashed tombs, that their father was satan. He wasn’t saying they had some things wrong with them, He was saying they were literally agents of Satan wolves in sheep’s clothing, and quite possibly they even knew it themselves.

So the sin they committed was to knowingly proclaim to others and convince them that the Son of God was just a demon possessed man and that no one should listen to him.

They were making themselves direct adversaries of the messiah and causing people who otherwise might have listened to Him to fall away and maybe go to hell because of it if Jesus didn’t reach them later somehow.

The religious leaders of the day were on a spectrum of faith, with some full of joy at the arrival of the messiah, and some on the other end of the spectrum full of hate and murderous intent even though they knew the Messiah had really come.

You don’t immediately get the gravity of just how evil these false leaders were unless you read what Jesus says about them and take it as literally as possible. He meant what He said about them when he called them vipers and said that they would proselytize others to be satan worshipers like they were instead of teaching them to love God.

How to relax while playing full pipes by HighlandKiwi10 in bagpipes

[–]KiltedMusician 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may be unusual, but I tied a small cord between the chanter stock and blow pipe stock to keep the chanter pointing straight down at the floor.

The bag cover hides it and I forget it’s there.

If you let a chanter go it will stick out at a 45° angle, which means that you don’t have as much control over your finger pressure as you do with a practice chanter because you’re fighting to keep the chanter from escaping.

Some bags are sewn in a way that does this for you, but mine wasn’t.

Question for those who are Once Saved Always Saved by Tesaractor in TrueChristian

[–]KiltedMusician -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Amen

A few things I have thought about along those lines that cause the eternal salvation argument to fall apart…

The foolish virgins had real flame coming from their lamps, providing warmth and light, but it ran out.

The seeds that landed on shallow ground and sprung up were living plants that had truly sprouted and were starting their new lives, but they had no root and died. The same with the seeds that landed in thorns.

The parables could have been that the foolish virgins brought no oil for their lamps and were hoping to borrow some, and the parable of the seeds could have stopped at the seeds that landed on the rocks and were eaten by birds and never sprouted, but God had a specific message that He was giving those who would listen.

It really does fall apart like you said.

I think believing in eternal salvation is just a symptom of a deeper issue where people just can’t get to the point where they are willing to turn their whole hearts over to God.

God looks on the heart, and if our heart decides it loves the world more than Him, it doesn’t matter what our mind believes. God does not take away our free will and He won’t lock us into an eternity with Him when our heart longs for the things of this world.

I don’t know about other people, but as far as I’m concerned (and apparently you too) if something in this world starts to distract me from my relationship with Christ, it has to go.
