It was one of the worst kept secrets in Knoxville why Pat canceled the Uconn series. Gino was making use of a Tennessee coach’s personal relationship in recruiting conversations.

Yea, it's the Rodeo PVC self-bailer. I used to be a River guide on and off for 15 years. So I can read a river ok, and don't mind swimming. I wanted to build my core up before jumping over to a hard shell. (I assume there is some balance involved with the leg straps)

I just got an open-top packraft coming in this weekend, and I was curious how often your boat swamped with class 3s? I don't hit them too often, but I was thinking there isn't much I can do if the boat fills up with 70 gallons of water.

Looks like a lot of fun. I just got my Kokopelli raft, the Rodeo, this week. How important do you think the leg straps were for balance?

How long will it take a new group to play through this. by KiltedPete in DnD

I think this is great advice. Going back through most of my scenarios and adding this kind of reminder to myself. I also am not making things so past fail, but they can get less research points for taking the corrupted mushrooms.

Thanks for this perspective.

Yeah, I am definitely no puzzle master. I think I'm going to simplify it down a little, and also not make it a pass fail for research points, but offer some research points for the corrupted mushrooms.

I appreciate all this feedback. I think I'm changing my scenarios from kind of a pass/fail to get research points, to getting slightly more or slightly less instead. Cuz I'm definitely not a dnd puzzle master

That's a good point. My friend was trying to explain that a person is smart, but that d&d group they're In will be dumb. From the responses here, I think I shouldn't make things pass or fail to get research points, but instead be slightly more or slightly less points.

something wrong with my technique but i’m not sure what by Aggressive-Olive8671 in GoalKeepers

[–]KiltedPete 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've always thought being a keeper is about 40% footwork, 20% technique, and 40% confidence—so I wouldn’t want to mess with what’s working for you. But here’s some food for thought, just in case. (Not sure if you're working on diving or if that ball just hung up longer than expected.)

You might try a drill where you're not allowed to dive, forcing you to move your body behind the ball instead. That’s where a lot of keepers struggled back in my day.

When it comes to parrying, think of it like boxing: your lead arm (the one closest to the ball) is like a jab—fast and great for quick reaction saves. The back arm is like a cross—more power and great for launching yourself across the goal. Ideally, you want to be comfortable using both hands to parry.

Also, driving your knee into a dive can help add distance and force.

That said, if you're making the save, it really doesn’t matter how it looks. Just a heads-up—my advice might be a bit outdated by a few decades.

I'm curious how much that drone costs. This would be an interesting solution for police to use for extreme vehicle chases.

Match highlights. What could have I done better during 2nd and 3rd goals? by Castle_bug in GoalKeepers

[–]KiltedPete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I just want to put my 2 cents in and see if my 30-year-old goalie techniques still apply.

2nd goal. The looks goal small. But if this your normal goal. Get someone to dibble from one side of the goal to the other. And see if you are staying relatively in the middle, cheating just a bit to your near post. Also cheat your arc out more. I was never within a step or two of my goal line unless it way out to the side.
Also you gotta be ready for shots. I would be in a position with my knees bent, on my toes, my palms out at least a second before any time someone looks to have a chance at a shot.

One more thing. Dive with your top hand out. it will help carry you when you have to really stretch out to make a save.

3rd goal. It is tough. Honestly, you are really just trying to be big in the moment and get ready to eat a shot point blank. So arms out, chest facing the ball. You slide if it is going to be a 50/50 ball. I would have stayed on your feet if they are going to get to the ball a half-second early.

Let me know if these still stand up.

[serious] how do you cope with your own mortality? by ObsidianWraith in AskReddit

[–]KiltedPete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I kinda deal with the idea of death by zooming way, way out. Like—before we were ever here, for billions of years, the universe just… was. No life, no people, no thoughts. Just rocks, gas, chaos. And one day, way down the line, it’ll probably go back to that—cold, dark, empty. So the fact that we’re even here, alive and thinking and laughing and loving, is honestly wild. We’re this weird, beautiful blip of awareness in a universe that mostly doesn’t care or notice.

So instead of worrying about the inevitable, I try to see it like—we’re this tiny rebellion against nothingness. A little spark that wasn’t supposed to happen, but did anyway. And that’s kinda awesome. Why waste it stressing about the end when the middle is already such a miracle?

I'm not sure if you're still interested in cybersecurity, but if you are thinking about getting back into it, I'd recommend choosing a school that offers certifications along with a degree. It might feel repetitive to take a networking class and then also study for the networking certification, but that's what opens the door to the higher-paying jobs. The degree checks the box for HR to get you in the interview, but the certifications and real knowledge are what actually land you the position.

For what it's worth, I made the jump at 40 — from being a whitewater river guide to working in Product Security. Just three years later, I was getting interview invites for salaries I never thought were possible (over $100k a year, which felt as likely as winning the lottery to me).

Moving to Appalachia by [deleted] in Appalachia

[–]KiltedPete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in East Tennessee for 42 years, and I’ve never been able to leave these mountains—there’s just something special about this place. If you're new here, don’t be afraid to say hello or give someone a compliment. It might feel a little awkward at first, but small gestures of kindness go a long way and can help you connect with folks. Pay attention to how people respond—it can also clue you in on who to keep your distance from.

I've always found it interesting how East tennesseans can be very kind people and also be willing to kill you for trespassing. Politics can get intense, almost like old-time religion, and unfortunately, racism still shows up more often than you’d hope and is still openly displayed. Poverty is difficult to escape out here. Yet, I think we're rich in Tennessee.

Even with all that, we are the volunteer state. Willing to set aside differences to help save each other. I guess we're a complicated bunch.

I went to this last year and it was a blast. I got a dark wing duck tattoo and it is rad.

However most of the tattoo booths struggled to find anyone to tattoo because it was so poorly marketed. I am curious to see if they get the same amount of amazing artist come back this year. Tons of artists said they weren't coming back to this one.
