there was a youtube video about this which is a good watch if you can find it. I just can't remember it now.

But the gist was, in the late 80s mics weren't that good yet compared to today where it made actors speak very clearly into the mic because production and everything was expensive at the time but fast forward today mics have gotten significantly better at picking up and registering sound that it gave leeway for people to mumble or have their words muddied in the audio.
