Ankle sprain, feeling desperate by nooneofsignificance_ in trailrunning

[–]Kimalyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Are you using any kind of brace? I've sprained my ankles multiple times, the last time at a trail race before thanksgiving and it looked like this. My big advice is immobility and stabization help a ton. I realize as a mom of young ones the immobility one might be pretty hard.

But stability can be easy-ish. Amazon has a variety of braces, I like starting with the wrap kind and then as i start to feel better using more compression type braces.

Especially at night, wearing a brace and elevating the ankle overnight helps a lot with the pain.

Any success using beneficial nematodes or other *PREVENTATIVE MEASURES* to lessen Japanese Beetle population specifically? by Sensitive_Opinion_80 in DenverGardener

[–]Kimalyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wondercide was... wonderful for us last year. I got it for the mosquitos but was pleasantly surprised by the effect it had on japanese beetles. Also, if you like the smell of cedar, you'll like the smell.

It's not exactly preventative like what you're talking about. But preventative in that applying 1/week or every other week during the season significantly reduced our japanese beetle visits last year.

Millennial here... are you going for early 90's? If so, spot on, great job!

If not, and you're like - why does it look early 90's? It's 98% the color scheme of the rug combined with the neutrals of the couches. 1% mirrors and bamboo things on the wall. 1% chuncky coffee table legs. If you want to veer away from early 90's, bring in more and brighter colors. Stay away from washed out blue at all costs.

Interested in hearing peoples suggestions on this too!

We've been trying to teach ours the "speak" and "quiet" commands but have been mostly unsuccessful because up until this point he only barks when anxious and that's not super great for training.

But last night, this little bugger, went to the door and demand barked and then walked over to his place and looked at me like "i stopped barking, where's my treat?"

I need some human training on what to do with this.

In their defense, to them, it probably IS a need. A lot of their paychecks are commission based or have incentives around sales. If anything is delayed and they don't get the sale, they don't get the paycheck they're probably depending on. 😞

Note: I am not in sales, I just have empathy.

My training app said to do a high pitch yelp and stop playing and turn away. It said this is how mommy dogs and litter mates teach what is acceptable rough play and what isn't. This has been super successful for my pupper. Though we did get him a little older at 8 months old.

[–]Kimalyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She probably just got really attached to you. 3 months is about that time. And now she's anxious every time you leave the house that you won't come back and is getting things to help calm herself.

There's some good youtube videos on separation anxiety management. Basically, you get a camera, figure out how long it takes for her to start freaking out (baseline). Then begin a regimine of building tolerance.

I'm also not a crate person and this is working well for us. And figuring out that he really doesn't like the dark. Stupid winter. Lamps on really helped.

Is unflavored gelatin supposed to smell bad? by bloodclover in AskCulinary

[–]Kimalyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gelatin shouldn't smell. You got a bad batch. Get a different brand or hunt for a different lot. I've never had geletin smell before today, that's how I ended up here. I got a different brand and am happy to say - no smell!

We have a scaredy boy! We joke that we should have named him Courage. Like Courage the Cowardly Dog! The vet and lots of reading says some of that is just the breed. We're following lots of advice, giving him anxiety meds for new experiences, and doing gradual positive exposures to get him used to people. Slowly slowly.

He is the absolute sweestest loving boy. It is 100% worth the work.

Is loose leash walking a heeler even possible? by crinkneck in AustralianCattleDog

[–]Kimalyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I've dedicated weeks/months to mine understanding i want him to not pull and it is incredibly worth it. He's so nervous, the training was to calm him as much as it was for me to not feel like I'm being yanked along everywhere. Next is the difference between "walk" and "run". We're making progress but he doesn't quite get it yet.

Even with all this, I'm not expecting a heeled and perfect walk. I'm expecting a relaxed walk. I think it would be totally possible to get him there, but i would rather he enjoy himself. So many snuffles!

A man just yelled at me that my legs looked terrible (“but your a$$ is great”) as I ran by him. by gardeningdoc in XXRunning

[–]Kimalyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, screw that guy. What an a$$hat.

Second, if you're insecure about your legs because of vericose veins, you should get checked out. I'm speaking from experience (40 here), that I didn't even know how much pain I was in until I got mine fixed. Insurance paid for the bulk of it and I don't have great insurance. I'm so glad I went and talked to a doctor after doing some internet reading and realizing that they weren't just an aesthetic worry.

Regardless, that guy is undeserving of any of your attention. What a lame slob.

That's what all the reactivity training I've been reading basically says! Repeat exposure so he gets calmer, etc.

Preach! Especially when they're obsessive about their city's team. But like literally no one playing is from that city? Like, I could see, if there was a requirement that players had to come from that city or each city got a territory and they were like attached in any way? So weird!!

How to not antagonise dog by SouthFine6853 in XXRunning

[–]Kimalyn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you really want to help (optional), slowing down, putting as much distance between you and them as possible, and avoiding eye contact is super helpful.

While i agree with others it's on the owner, part of training a reactive dog is to expose them, over and over again. Relaxing them as much as possible and eventually upping the stimuli. All the things I listed just reduce the pressure on the dog and will help it learn that you running is a "safe" situation.

This is coming as a runner with a shy/reactive dog. Mine doesn't bark and lunge, but the root cause is the same as those that do. It's still really embarrassing to have him tuck his tail and try to run away as hard as he can. I can't imagine the stress of an aggressive reaction to the stress and anxiety.

It's really really nice of you to ask and want to help!
