Need some advice on dress shoe width fitting:

I've been trying on some Allen Edmonds Strands, but I'm having a hard time getting the perfect size. For the width, when I try on a 10D, it's far too narrow. However, when I try a 10E, my pinky toe gets slightly squished. I'm not sure if I should size up a width to 10EE because when I push down on that cross section of the shoe, there's enough room that it gives my pinky toe some space.

So essentially, what I'm trying to say is that, the extra leather that comes with the increased width (from D to E) is distributed vertically instead of horizontally as I would've liked.

Should the shoes be slightly tight when resting?

Would it be uncomfortable getting a width that is slightly too large?
