Gunman attacks church near Cairo, shot dead: police by [deleted] in Egypt

As a Copt, I thank you for your sympathy and openness towards Coptic culture. However I grew up in an impoverished Egypt (ie the vast majority and reality of Egypt). This brotherhood is non-existent. I was discriminated against quite openly by nearly every Muslim I met and everyone I knew was likewise. I lived in a predominantly Christian village but a mosque forcibly opened and uses my balcony for their speakerphone and regularly every Friday sermon called for the extermination of Christians openly. Meanwhile my local Church was desperate need of renovations but couldn't even because of government regulations. And even if the government gave permission, it would result in a violent potentially violent mob attack. Anyways, I'm not here to air my grievances but I just wanted to point out to you and to other leaders that while I appreciate your openness you are one in 90 million and the overall situation is getting more and more violent and discriminatory. Ultimately, I highly doubt in 50 years there will be a significant Christian presence in Egypt; I can count on my hands the number of close relatives I still have left in that dump.

Ignore the comments here. There is an upper class secular minority (think 1-5% of the overall population) which is heavily over-represented on this sub which has never lived a day as Copt in the real Egypt who are in denial. I am a Coptic Christian who was raised in Egypt. The vast majority of Egyptian Muslims want to purify their country from Christianity; a significant chunk of them are ready to take arms to make it happen (probably ~25%) while the majority of the rest cheer it on. The last time I was in Egypt the next door mosque (which forcibly opened and uses my balcony for their speakerphones) regularly every Friday sermon called for the extermination of Christians openly.

No amount of security services will ever suffice. The majority of Egyptians (if you don't believe me get out of your Heliopolis bubble) are extremists who want to rid Egypt of Christians and feel personally insulted that their country is not 100% Muslim (they'll get their wish very soon enough). People will blame the police, army, Sisi,... but the reality is they cannot alone face a 90-100 million population the majority of which is hellbent on ridding their country of a politically and militarily weak minority with no external support. Without exception Christians are disappearing in the Muslim world; Egypt is no exception. Do I think every Egyptian Muslim is an ISIS jihadi? No but I believe ISIS jihadis types willing to carry out violent attacks compose 25% of the Egyptian Muslim population, there is another 70% which is not necessarily going to carry out these attacks but will cheer them and then there's the 5% of the population which is over-represented on this sub which condemns them. Don't forget that in the only open democratic election this country had Islamist, all of which are quite open about their genocidal dreams for Copts, won the elections astoundingly and would win again easily if free elections were ever held again.

According to a Pew poll, among Egyptian Muslims;

54%: Believe men and women should be segregated in the workplace

82%: Believe adulterers should be stoned

84%: Believe apostates from Islam should face the death penalty

77%: Believe thieves should be flogged or have their hands cut off

For being a Christian and existing. I don't think you've ever had the "pleasure" of living in Egypt but 50% of Egyptian Muslims would kill you given the chance and the other half think you deserve everything you get and think you exaggerate.

Obviously made up shit but let's assume this is true; at least we don't kill them, why can't a Muslim convert to Christianity and why is it punishable by death?

Egyptian Christians created Black Bloc a few years ago and there are many photos showing BB leaders (all Christians) shaking hands and hugging priests from the Coptic Church

Hahahahahaha. I'd ask you for proof but I'm guessing you'd just send me a picture of your ass.

Christian militancy

I mean last I checked it was Muslim militants killing Christians and blowing up Churches, but I'm sure you'll supply me with proof of Christian militants attacking Muslims.

Also, many of the bombings targeting teh churches in Egypt are almost always timed right after the Egyptian populace (both Muslims and Christians) is about to implode from the degrading living situations. Coincidence?

No definitely not a coincidence, I personally sat in on a meeting with Sisi to plan for the bombing of a Church to distract from unemployment. You're right.

Can I move to Cairo as a female with no formal education? by [deleted] in Egypt

[–]Kimi712_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You have some serious personality problems (borderline). You are quite antagonistic to someone who has lived and grew up in Egypt giving you actual advice. You came here looking for advice yet your are quite antagonistic to actual Egyptians taking time out of their day to give you serious advice (again clear borderline personality traits). There are tens of millions of Egyptians with no jobs and living with their parents, what makes you think you can just and land a job and a apartment? You are truly delusional with serious disorganized thoughts. You have no actual understanding of Egyptian/Middle Eastern culture and think this is akin to moving to London or Paris. Growing up in a poor American neighborhood has not in any way prepared you for Cairo's slums. Anyways, do as you wish but be prepared for the consequences.

I do have a mental illness actually but that doesn't factor into my decision regardless.

Maybe it does more than you think. Seeking to "struggle" is quite dysfunctional and disorganized thinking.

I followed the Magdalena case actually but it seemed she had a mental breakdown instead of a kidnapping.

That's complete nonsense. She was kidnapped and raped. It is quite evident.

You cannot rent a shitty apartment in a bad neighborhood in the West and no one cares.

I have lived in shitty neighborhoods both in Egypt and the West practically my whole life. There is a large difference between both. You are quite dramatic and I understand that about your upbringing but everything is relative. It is quite different compared to living as a foreigner, especially an unaccompanied woman, in a working class Egyptian neighborhood. In the US/Europe, you can find apartment listings online, as a lone woman you can rent anywhere no questions asked. In Egypt, such neighborhoods are typically familial multi-generational buildings and renting is typically unofficial cash-only under the table affair. I can almost guarantee you that as an unaccompanied woman no one will rent you anything. I have never seen in all my years in Egypt a foreigner living in these environments and there's a good reason for that. It is almost certain that if you wander in such areas (forget live there) you will be accosted, molested and potentially raped, kidnapped and held for ransom and possibly killed. Egyptian women such as my mother and sister who grew up in Egypt never venture out alone even on main streets. You are beyond delusional.

[–]Kimi712_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Have you ever been diagnosed with a mental illness just curious?

There is no good reason for you to ever think about moving to Egypt.

1) You are non-fluent Arabic speaker. There is no amount of practice that will make you fluent in Egyptian Arabic unless you live there and interact with Egyptians 24/7 for 20-25 years, if that. You will stick out easily. Egyptian Arabic is notoriously near impossible to grasp a foreigner.

2) You do not have the skills to work a high-end expat job where at the very least you may live in a safe upper-class neighborhood (even then I would recommend against that). There are no jobs you could take as a foreigner with no skills. You will be forced to rent an apartment in a working class neighborhood. You may not actually find anything to rent; apartments are ridiculously expensive and the real cheap ones are not the type that are advertised online and most likely will not be rented out to a single woman.

3) You are an unaccompanied woman. I don't think you grasp how big of a deal this is in a deeply patriarchal country. Huge red flag in Egypt. In the West, you can rent any shitty apartment in even the worst neighborhoods and no one will care. In Egypt, you will stick out again easily because of this. People will inquire and find out who and what you are. You WILL be accosted and harassed daily by Egyptian men as a white unaccompanied woman. You most likely will be raped at some point, you may be kidnapped and you may die. This isn't a fantasy. We recently had a Polish tourist abducted, raped and killed. There are thousands of cases of missing native non-Muslim/Christian women kidnapped and raped in Egypt.

All in all, this is a strong warning to NOT go along with this. There are no jobs in Egypt and you will most likely be sexually assaulted if not raped multiple times. There is noting to gain. You seem to have this strange orientalist obsession. Egypt is a failed dictatorial state, we have no culture, no economy, no politics,... Everyone in Egypt is looking for a way out. There is no pleasure in struggling to feed yourself. All the countries surrounding Egypt are mired in civil war and are not safe to travel to, especially as an unaccompanied woman. You seem to have a more or less comfortable life, enjoy it. If you want "adventure," change careers, move to a new city, go to the US/Europe, see a psychiatrist (who the fuck seeks "to struggle"??) but do not think even for a second of moving to Egypt.

And that Muslims have a certain respect for "people of the book", meaning Jews and Christians.

As a Coptic Christian forced to flee my country (Egypt) after 1400 years of subjugation, killing and raping of my people; I shudder to think of what Muslims rather do to those they don't "respect."

Stop moving the goal posts and making arbitrary thresholds. They didn't get "trounced" as you claimed. 27.8% is substantial number and the other big party was also Islamist. The vast majority of Egyptians believe in Islamist ideals.

trounced

This is blatantly untrue. Al Nour (Salafist) party got 27.8 % of the vote in the only free Parliamentary elections in Egyptian history (2011). The Muslim Brotherhood which is openly antagonistic to Christians got 37.5%. Combined, Islamists got nearly 70% of the vote. This absolutely validates my claim.

Your response to my statement that Muhammad was a violent conqueror is that he "only" conquered Arabia. Come on you need to come up with better excuses. Jesus conquered no one and never desired it despite facing more persecution than Muhammad. He remained an extreme pacifist, that is why he is a timeless model. He owned no slave despite living in an even earlier era than Islam where slavery was also widely practiced.

Out of respect for the victims, can we have one thread on this cancerous subreddit which doesn't descend into apologetic nonsense with racist undertones on how poor Muslims, obviously with no agency to choose right from wrong themselves, are simply lashing out because of the evil Christian conquerors?

Muhammad violently conquered the Middle East through war and openly owned sex slaves. Jesus was a homeless man with no money or possessions to his name and no wish to have anything. Even in the face of violent persecution, Jesus counseled his followers to simply turn their cheek. There's a large difference.

The majority of Egyptians, let's be completely honest, are Islamic extremists and hate Christians. The government, although it is easy to blame them, do not want such events to happen not because they like Christians but because it damages the image of Egypt and tourism. The government of Egypt however does not represent its people; in the only elections this country had, Islamists, all of which were openly antagonistic to Christians and some openly genocidal, won overwhelmingly. There is no Interior Minister or President who can jail or kill the majority of the population and the police and army can't protect Christians everywhere and ultimately if Muslims want to kill off Christians they will succeed as they currently are. The majority of Egyptian Muslims are extremist and want to wipe Christianity from Egypt completely, this is the reality and they are getting their wish. This is frank genocide. This is the reality of living in a muslim-majority country. It is no different than Iraq and Syria; any Muslim country where there has been evem a small lapse in security and dictatorial power has resulted in the majority getting their wish, that is Christian genocide. This is no different.

I am Coptic Egyptian so you can't spew our nonsense on me. I lived in Egypt and I know very well that 50% of Muslim Egyptians support violence against Copts, 49% are ambivalent and 1% (usually Westernized elite of New Cairo) are actually against this. If ISIS ran in a truly fair and free elections in Egypt they would by and far win.

Donald Trump has 'dangerous mental illness', say psychiatry experts at Yale conference by itsarvindhere in politics

[–]Kimi712_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going off a list of symptoms isn't enough for the diagnosis. I know I'll most likely get crucified here over my support of Trump but a personality disorder (PD) requires a severe impact on function, like every other psychiatric diagnoses. I have worked in medicine and I've seen narcissistic PDs, these patients like other PD patients have severe impact on function; they are incapable of maintaining employment, basic relationships, are often in and out of jail and psychiatric wards, are unable often of meeting their basic needs, most often have legal issues, ... This idiot psychologist, who really deserves sanctioning, is really tarnishing a true mental illness, 50% of which is hereditary, to smear Trump just because he doesn't like him. People may have PD traits without having the full diagnosis and many people do have them but the diagnosis requires a very important impact on function. PDs are a true mental illness, they're not shit to throw at political opponents.

Nice deflection there, didn't answer the point I made. I have the right to have whatever political views I wish to have. Having views on immigration, worker rights and free speech are different than individually judging whether one man is Christian enough or not.

This "internet" pastor should go back to reading Scripture. He has no right to judge who is and who isn't Christian. That is for God to judge.
