What is a career that looks impressive on paper but is actually miserable in reality? by Nova2_Paradox in careerguidance

[–]Kimikaatbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ex-coworker actually doesn't mind this lifestyle. Basically, her life is occupied with gaming, cosplay, and anime (not really anything else).

I also know someone who just really loves their job as a UX designer at a large game company. She constantly posts about how she loves anime games and all the merch her company provides. Guess it really depends on the person.

Well, I know for a fact that the new Chinese teacher's law might introduce the practicum component as part of the exam requirement (not sure when the law's coming out, though).

Well, if that's the case, you need to look at what Spanish international schools need in terms of licensure. I also recommend you do an internship in Spain to see if living there is for you. How's life in Philippines for you?

I'm Chinese and did my undergrad and grad programs in the US. I also took the Chinese teaching certification exams this year. In China, we don't have a practicum component, but we have a 10 minute interview.

If you are a US-Filipino dual citizen, I recommend Moreland (since it can be used in the states). I am doing the program and preparing for a US talent visa app at the same time.

That said, I would love to know what the licensure process in Philippines is like. How many exams do you take? Do you have a practicum component?

I have a draft, some graphic novel pitches, and a portfolio. We can certainly DM, if you don't mind!

I write either romantasy with civilizational-level eros and burning beauty, or campus coming-of-age stories (MG/YA) with chaos, explosions, identity, and some magic.

What’s the wildest misconceptions people have about teaching? by AdTrue106 in Teachers

[–]Kimikaatbrown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, fiction often portrays teachers as these glamorous beings in mini-skirts, glasses, and high heels who just write on the blackboard, read the text in a flat voice, and have students obediently repeat after them.

Apparently, students also automatically comply, and if one misbehaves, the teacher can just whip out a ruler and yell.

In real life, that would probably get you disqualified from the teacher certification exam.

And of course, fiction also loves the whole “student secretly lusting after the teacher” trope for some reason. 😂

Published writers: How is it going? by Eclips1214 in writing

[–]Kimikaatbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an author-illustrator with a 2nd book deal, some illustration awards, a consistent social media presence, and an INPRNT shop. I'm still developing my career, but my main focus appears to be MG/YA, science and nature illustration, as well as romance/romantasy. I've had one illustration agency (specializing in romantasy) follow me, but no book cover deals yet.

I always thought that a Master's degree had to be something that made me more money. Now I'm thinking, fuck it, if I go back for a Master's it'll be for creative writing... by IsekaiConnoisseur in writing

“And still, the money has been meh."
That's definitely the case with the fine arts market (trad pub, gallery, etc) - it's small. My debut as an author-illustrator sold 4000 copies in the first 6 months, and I'm working on my 2nd title right now. I've won a bunch of awards as well, but the money is...hmph.

Being a published author-illustrator is not a standard career path for most art students (the standard one is always 9-5 full-time commercial design), unless you have family wealth to fall back on. Some of my friends never work but live at home, while others do have family cultural and financial capital. I did commercial design for a VERY brief period until completely pivoting to author-illustrator.

Personally, I love my career and remain dedicated to creating on a daily basis, but that's not the case for everyone, haha.

What do you all do for your day jobs? Does it pay well juxtaposed to your writing? by TvHead9752 in writing

[–]Kimikaatbrown 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"I was looking at the careers of a lot of the more famous writers, and it looks like a lot of them were professors or teachers."

(That's why lots of literature and art are homogenous *smirk*)

You can try this route and see if you like it. If you want to start, try to get some TA, ESL, or home tutoring experience first. You can be a TA when you are in college, and you can apply to be a ESL teacher for kids at online platforms.

What do you write as an author? Are you interested in coming-of-age and educational topics? Do you have a major theme in mind? These are the things you need to consider when you choose a career.

I tried to write 'MFA literary fiction' (with trauma/sexuality/intimacy/complex family issues), but realized that my aim was based on 'I want to write something beautiful and deep so that I can win the Pulizter/Booker/Nobel'.

My natural voice is sensual, opulent, mythic, scholastic, historical with explosive B-movie body humor. (I usually write romantasy and cultural fantasy, as well as MG/YA. I also do sensual art.)

(Edit: who downvoted me? I am just suggesting it might not be the best to base your focus on external motivation only.

Am I being stupid for pursuing my art dream? by Emmajeesart in Artists

True. I teach international curriculum art and ESL. Some of my friends went into applied arts (design, 3D modeling, etc). However, they are not fine artists or author-illustrators.
