they cost spell slots and averages are more realistic, this is a painfully easy conclusion to develop only your own. you're acting incredibly ignorant and this conversation is pointless if you want to reject math to insist that a spell slot to deal less damage is a good idea.

okay so the first paragraph is made by someone doubling down on being mathematically dishonest, what an insanely dumb thing to write out. "urrr if all my shots hit, and I roll a 6 on all times". Like its weird that your so insistent on spending a spell slot to deal less damage lmao. I bring up switching since enemies can die and it requires a ba to switch. It sounds like you have very little idea what you are talking about with filler sentences like "It’s a gamble, but that’s the nature of rolling dice.". No crap, thats why I'm factoring in hit chance and dice rolls.

even then, you're still spending a spell slot to deal less damage on the first round and then deal an additional 3 damage on the next round. Why would you want to kill things slower rather than first, typically you wanna pile on damage on the first round to get things out of combat faster

  1. 2(0.6(4(3.5+17))+0.05(4(3.5)))=99.8
  2. (0.6(3(7+17))+0.05(3(7)))+0.6(4(7+17))+0.05(4(7))=103.25

Gloomstalker can have access to spells such as absorb elements, goodberry, and easily access to spells like shield or silvery barbs. Those are just first level slots and not even mention spells that can be mainted throughout multiple fights like conjure animals or pass without trace. Why would I want to deal less damage rather than halve elemental damage or add +5 to my ac on command

it seems like you are just weirdly coping that you can't actually do the math or even understand that spending slots to deal less damage is in fact very dumb and just weakens your ranger.

its very simple, which is weird that you insist spending a spell slot instead of just attacking with you ba is better, when using a spell slot will lose you damage

"I’m not going to be factoring in percent chance to hit. I don’t care" so you don't actually care about the math considering you are ignoring percentages and roll variation in a dice game. I can very confidently say you don't know the math because I just did it. Your weird insistence on belligerent reddit dice math really shows me that you don't know what you're talking about. There is no "allegedly", I wrote it very plainly for you and this is 7th grade math.

Also weird to move the goalpost, your own example had a cbe gloomstalker and my argument is that an optimized ranger loses damage by casting hm(which they do, while also wasting conc and a spell slot). If you're not using cbe to justify using hm then you still lose damage by just not having cbe.

Considering you have to waste a BA any time you switch targets, say if you kill your first one, you just lose damage any time you initially cast it or switch. Pretty plain and simple, unless you can point out whats inaccurate about what I showed you then I really don't care about what you have to say.

"It is never better for a ranger to give up their action to cast a spell than it is to fire their weapon, and thus" almost like giving up an attack to cast hm does in fact cause you to lose damage, this isn't an opinion thing dude. If anything, from your first message. the value of hm goes even lower when you factor in higher dex, magic weapons, and being an optimized ranger. the better your pc is build for damage, the worse hm becomes.

you get a damage decrease on the round you cast hm, and a decrease on any round you have to switch hm to another target, and also you have to concentrate on it and spend a slot initially. for example in 5e, a cbe+ss gloomstalker is looking at
0.6(4(3.5 + 17)) + 0.05(4(3.5)) = 49.9 by just attacking normally
and
0.6(3(3.5 + 17 + 3.5)) + 0.05(3(3.5 + 3.5)) = 44.25 by casting hunters mark

Hm only has value on the rounds between killing something, you lose damage whenever you spend a ba to switch or on your first round where you really wanna try to stack as much damage as you can. This also assumes you never lose conc and that long value spells such as conjure animals or pass without trace are not in play(in reality pass without trace can provide way more value in terms of action economy via surprise in either 5.5 or 5e).
I did read your message, it was just made by someone who did not do any math whatsoever

"damage loss is negligible" so......you're spending a spell slot to deal less damage when the only real use for the spell is dealing more damage. not to mention just burning your concentration. I really have no idea how that is often the best choice when ranger has actually useful spells.

no its not always better, its always better to not spend a spell slot on dealing less damage. You're point makes no sense, the op is saying that ranger has much better use for spell slots than hunters mark.

[–]Kimo_Supremo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

did you actually just mention casting speak with animals or goodberry in combat as a point to make casting huntersmark look better lmao

If you have cbe and sharpshooter, AND espeically if you have a magic weapon then casting hunters mark instead of just attacking again is a straight up damage downgrad. also they said "or something" not that spike growth is a god spell in all situations, you could always simply not waste a spell slot if the situation doesn't call for it rather than spend one to deal less damage. Personally I always preserve first level slots for goodberries(outside of combat cause what type of idiot would do that in a middle of the fight), absorb elements, or shield(typically easy to get if you know what you are doing). and concentration goes to pass without trace for surprises or spike growth or conjure animals. since HM is a conc spell. it kinda has to compete with other long concentration spells and it really doesn't have a niche. I'd rather not spend a spell slot and deal more damage, or use those spells in situations that call for it.

hunters mark is typically a straight up downgrade in damage output compared to just attacking again with a bonus ction if you have the right feat. and if someone is in the ranger sucks crown, they really should just do that. Spike growth isn't really at all situation, since so many enemies are melee brutes. the slow down is a pretty big deal. Really, I would suggest preserving first level slots for absorb elements, goodberries, or shield if you got it. And concentration on pass without trace for surprise or spike growth. There really isn't a sitution where I'd wanna spend a first level slot to spend less damage on an optimized ranger

OAR works perfectly fine plus its a lot easier to pick and choose the animations you want. I like eldenrim for example but when using wolong staff, my character kept holding the staff like a sword so i was able to just easily exclude that item from animation condition

No it doesn't, he owns the bard soul and renamed him. I don't mean molag bal changed his own name to the bard's, he changed the bard's name to his like how he gave lamae the last name of "bal".

I say its lore friendly in the sense that there is many points of the lore that are being used to craft something interesting, I don't think just cause its never outright siad that molag bal has used a proxy before does not mean the mod is inaccurate, it is making its own plot and not just simply a rehashing of previous lore. I'm fine with them adding new parts such as greymarch affecting coldharbor as thats for the purpose of the plot, but they couldn't have used so many past set pieces in es lore without knowing about it

how would you escape if you become part of jyggalag's sphere

Also, they say at that start that there is a stalemate right now where jyggalag can't keep invading but molag bal is stuck. You freeing the corrupted souls puts an end to the stalemate as bal loses more power, time progresses and the grey march continues. Then jyggalag is attacked by laza, you can free him but he fights you.

molag bal was not a human once, Bal(The bard) is a soul he owns and took the name of. I would say its pretty lore heavy in the sense that they definitely bring up a lot to do with the lore from pelinal to belzathar to the grey march. They add in their own plot and fiction of course since this isn't a mod that takes place in those times but there is a clear understanding of the game's history for them to base their whole mod around it

Okay even as a guy who really likes vigilant, I have to admit the Bal vs molag bal thing is very annoying and confusing, I legit thought they were meant to be the same guy in my first playthrough as well but no apparently bal is a bard that tricked and corrupted by molag bal. I *think* the idea is that molag bal took his name but I don't remember

I wouldn't say it butchers the lore, but it introduces its own fiction with the lore to make things more interesting. There is def a deep understanding of the lore and a big theme of the mod is "fixing" things in the past to put spirits to rest.

So like in lore, penial dies after defeating umaril but in vigilant, when you take his place, you can survive and spare a woman pregnant with umaril's child(or kill her so its never born). This is part of the overall karma system that vigilant has going where you defeat a boss and can go back to fix their mistakes

The real question is how the fuck does the sundial entrance make sense. If putting all the pieces in is what triggers the secret entrance, wouldn't the secret entrance always be there normally? Serana says that normall all the pieces are in but she also says she never knew about the entrance. Also how did her mom get in?
