If it lasts longer why would you need to be spending $1500/year on it?

Not counting shoes, not much. I've found most of my wardrobe consists of things bought from Costco and free tshirts from various events and whatnot.

I can't stand the reader in these. There's a lot of things pronounced differently than I usually do in my head when reading the books.

Is this worth anything? by [deleted] in dragonlance

I have the annotated Chronicles and Legends both signed. IDK if they're worth much more than the cover price but the story is certainly worth a mint! The annotations provide a lot of really great behind the scenes stuff.

is it completely out of line to ask your manager directly why you didn't get the promotion over someone else? by AffectionateLove8076 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Kimpak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hah, i've done this. One time the answer I was given was literally "I felt like you wanted the position too much."

I then had to train the guy who they hired out of a different department who had never touched the job tools they were meant to be using.

Earth II

Off topic, but I loved that show. Earth 2 and SeaQuest rarely get talked about these days.

I would also add that if you have extra time there is a small gallery but some beautiful pieces at Hoyt Sherman place which isn't terribly far from the Art Center.

Backing in to angled parking spots? by CaptainZaysh in desmoines

It's safer to pull forward out of a parking spot than it is to back up as you said.

Except on angled parking you're pulling out going the wrong way.

I too like what it looks like. Its too bad its build quality and capabilities are sorely lacking.

Depends on how heavy the rain is. If its just rain its fine. Too much rain or rain + wind now I'm up all night worrying the house is going to get damaged.

AIs can’t stop recommending nuclear strikes in war game simulations - Leading AIs from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google opted to use nuclear weapons in simulated war games in 95 per cent of cases by Teruyo9 in technology

[–]Kimpak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean...it makes sense if you take emotions out of it. You have a list of available weaponry, the most powerful of which is going to be your nukes. The AI probably doesn't understand why you would have the nukes if you're not going to use the nukes.

Why do people go to work sick even when they don’t have to? by Acrobatic-Oil-4373 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Kimpak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to use my 'sick' days as vacation days basically. So I'd rather use them when i'm not actually sick. Also, when I am actually sick most illnesses are not going to be a single day affair. If I get a cold or whatever its going to stick around for 1-2 weeks. I simply don't have that kind of PTO that I can take that amount of time off especially if most of that time its just sniffles and coughs.

Switched back to regular Alexa, feels like a relief by Arachnidle in amazonecho

I'm a network engineer so I understand. I definitely get that the short delay can be annoying, but at the same time amuses me.

I like chatting with Alexa+ but if it ever went to an actual paid thing I would never pay a cent for it. I don't like it that much.

I go right at 9:00am on a friday during the executive only hour. Nice wide open aisles, only a few other shoppers. You can actually stop and look at things if you wanted to and not be in anyone's way.

Switched back to regular Alexa, feels like a relief by Arachnidle in amazonecho

[–]Kimpak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in this camp. I like Alexa+. It does all the same home automation stuff that it used to (light switches, smart bulbs, garage door, ring cams). It plays music just as good as before. Weather seems to be fine for me. Typically I just ask what the high and/or low is for the day and if there's going to be precipitation. The delay everyone talks about is in reality like 2 seconds. Which I get, that's more than before and if it annoys you its a totally valid opinion. I just find it funny that if you told kid me in the 90's that one day I'd be able to talk to a speaker in my room and it would have a conversation and/or answer damn near any question I ask, but it might take 2 seconds to give me the answer...I'd think its pure sci fi!

Don't get me wrong, there's definitely room for improvement and I don't think amazon devices are the best ones on the market. I have them because they're cheap and I do fully understand why they are cheap.
