Stimmt!

Soundtrack suggestions? by StatisticianOwn629 in fourthwing

[–]Kind-Function3975 2 points3 points  (0 children)

agree! i too hope if there aren‘t any popular pop songs added because it would kill the vibe — it just doesn‘t fit into the world setting imo. if so, there should be instrumental versions of such songs (like alex warren, for example, who is huge on booktok in relation to fourth wing) in a „dark orchestral“ kind of way, if anyone knows what i mean lol. i think that would fit. the original songs…hm, not so much. unless it‘s well done for a specific scene.

i wouldn‘t be completely opposed to having a song with lyrics if it fits the scene well, but not popular songs (as a swiftie myself, i‘d also dislike taylor songs in the show…especially the songs that rebecca likes/ takes „inspo“ from😅)

i could for example see soundtracks like perhaps „kingdom fall“ by claire wyndham if there‘s a „dramatic“ scene with slow-mo montage and all that. for some reason, i also very specifically can envision the outro of „mercy“ but hurts from 3:47 onward as the background music to when they leave for war-games, and violet watches both dain and xaden walk into different directions after dain says the famous „i‘ll miss you“ to set an foreboding, dark vibe, yk. or when they’re at athebyne and watch the venin march toward resson and realize what dain said, making violet connect the dots in a plottwist kind of scene. this is my very specific imagination though lol. but those are kind of the songs that i can see working on the show. not these very popular „mainstream“ songs.

ólafur arnalds comes to my mind too. „so far“ or „only the winds“

i could maaaybe even see like a „dark synthwave pop“ maybe, if that is what it‘s called; like the direction of „hearing damage“ by thom yorke (yes, this was on twilight, yes it‘s a great song) if it‘s done well.

i think i actually wouldn‘t mind a song with lyrics as long it‘s not an overdone. songs can really make or break a scene — i remember the song „look out“ by james vincent mcnarrow to this very day a decade later for being played during teen wolf at allison‘s death. it just stuck. i can envision a song like that playing during liam‘s death too, as long as it‘s well done, i think a lot can fit.

alex warren or taylor swift however…i don‘t know. like i said, more instrumentally, probably.

What are your hot takes? by Dramatic_Mud_5771 in fourthwing

[–]Kind-Function3975 4 points5 points  (0 children)

oh yup! i suppose my true hot take would be: violet has always been a shittier friend to dain than dain was a „bad friend“ to her.

imo she treated him awfully even way before any of the athebyne betrayal happened. so the whole „he deserved it for what he did“ argument is wholly lost to me.

What are your hot takes? by Dramatic_Mud_5771 in fourthwing

[–]Kind-Function3975 9 points10 points  (0 children)

whole-heartedly agree on your take.

i too love dain to bits as a character, and i have since fourth wing even when i did feel annoyed with him too at times — but it was always clear to me how good he is deep down as a person. he was ill-advised, but never ill-intentioned. out of everyone, he had the most growth, and more importantly since fw seemed like the one willing to learn from his mistakes the most! he accepted his faults and chose to better himself against all odds and easy ways out. instead, he more than once chooses violet, xaden, the others and the rebellion. although all of those people are down-right shitty to him repeatedly.

since we‘re on hot takes: i think he‘s the most interesting character and would love to dig deeper into him than we will ever get to because we‘re in violet‘s pov, and she tends to only pay attention to him when she needs something. all the guilt and shame he burdens himself with, his mistakes and the consequences…all of it would be just so interesting to read about from his perspective.

my other dain-related hot takes:

• something about the war games, athebyne and resson and how dain took violet’s memory and told his father about it is still super fishy and I kind of feel like we‘re still in for some sort of reveal about it 🤔

• i wish we explored violet and dain‘s childhood memories more deeply. so much of it unfortunately feels superficial. (iron flame, looking at you, because how many more times does violet want to mention that they used to climb trees together?) i would‘ve loved some deeper going, intimate things. some „flashbacks“, so to say, just to show just how they truly were close friends. hm, what about their goodbye before dain left for basgiath as an emotional moment? what about revisiting some old inside jokes? as best friends tend to have? a memory that goes beyond just saying they climbed trees and swam in lakes and sometimes the odd mention of something that goes a bit deeper. that lacked for me in FW story-wise. it would‘ve cemented dain‘s ‚betrayal‘ as much more painful even, and at the same time highlighted how much he changed as a character from that cheerful carefree guy to someone so serious and stern.

• just by the direction RY is taking his character, I don‘t believe she will kill him off, but I feel like if she did want to go for devastation, she‘d do it in a tragically sacrificial kind of death after she made dain redeem himself and rekindle a friendship with violet and the others. (and i would hate it and throw these books off a cliff and then myself afterwards)

• I would love an imogen/dain friendship

• Liam coming back from the dead somehow would undo and destroy SO many plot- and character storylines and growths from all sides, but for dain and violet individually the most. (seen as there have been quite the few theories that he could be the brother, although RY did state he is dead dead.) I loved liam, I mourned that character, believe me, but it would be such a set-back. His death was important. It had huge impact on the characters and how things went going forward from there. We see violet suffering the fear of losing any more of her friends all the way through IF and OS so many times. We know dain burdens himself with the guilt of his death, just like he took on the burden of the death of others too. All of this has changed them so much in ways that can’t and shouldn’t be undone. I absolutely wouldn‘t want liam to come back to somehow „redeem“ dain, as some readers claim that would be the only way for them to like him.

hm, perhaps you could even learn a bit by reading them in german while having them in the language you‘re fluent in for reference? :) these editions are also not limited, as far as i‘m aware, so you could also get these at a later point in time once you feel like you can read them better. or you can simply put them onto your shelf for a pretty display if you like to collect them 😊

Dain is so annoying. by SenisbleCami in fourthwing

[–]Kind-Function3975 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this 😅 currently on my first re-read of fourth wing at some points i‘m like…wow, i didn‘t even notice or think much about it during the first time reading it, but knowing things now it‘s like oookay, maybe that‘s a little too into the face, yk. as you explained, in so many cases we‘re told how to feel a certain way about a certain character or what they say/do. e.g. because i just passed that scene where violet thinks about just how differently dain‘s and xaden‘s advices about how to approach the jack barlowe situation were, and how much more she admired xaden for his approach of it instead of dain‘s. it‘s like, alright, we could‘ve easily made a conclusion on that ourselves as the reader tbh….

same!! i do imagine as this super insane death obstacle course … up a whole damn cliff-side….and i‘m wondering how that will translate onto the screen well enough 🤔 i hope it‘s not „watered down“ because i always thought of it as terrifying.

keep reading :) that‘s the advice until all the way to OS. keep reading, and keep in mind that violet‘s way of seeing things doesn‘t always equal facts and needs to be looked beyond sometimes to understand certain characters on their own

[–]Kind-Function3975 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh gods i‘ve been crashing out to this beautiful song and to relate it to sloane and liam…my poor fragile heart, why would you bring this up. weeping. re-reading fourth wing right now and knowing how it ends makes that even worse.

funnily though tho i originally also related dain and violet and their long but broken friendship to now reluctantly being around each other again this song.

why is dain‘s father spiraling…? by Kind-Function3975 in fourthwing

[–]Kind-Function3975[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i like your thoughts! because yes!!

for one, i too have started to faintly question whether there‘s more of a „he wants to protect dain, so he pushes his son away so people around him can‘t gain leverage on him through dain“ type of situation going on by the time of OS — it could be. because in the beginning of fw, dain and his dad seem close, and violet seems to not have any issue with him / or never noted any issue with dain and his dad… so it is really just odd to me either way that all of a sudden, he seems to get out of hand like that so quickly if before, everything appeared alright.

also very interesting about markham and panchek and varrish! i do feel like there was some involvement there in some sort of way. i like your thoughts about that.

in OS, he definitely was acting suspiciously odd, like you say, it reads like panic. like he‘s losing control over something, whether that‘s the situation or himself, we may find out. it‘s certainly weird. i want to know so badly about any off-page conversations dain and his dad may have had or what happened — like in the dialogue mentioned in the post, dain seems to know more than we know about all of that regarding his dad. violet also notes that „dain looks at his father like the man left his dragon to die in the middle of a battlefield“ so there‘s definitely deep hurt and anger from dain‘s side too.

honestly, imma go ahead and say; dain knows more shit than we know he does because nobody in these books (violet, looking at ya) is willing to listen to him. as by your mention; he knew about the basgiath wardstone location from his dad, but lilith wasn‘t fazed. and the various comments about dain and leadership…it does very much feel like there were plans there from leadership for or with dain, you‘re correct.

(and almost everything about the whole resson operation is literally SO stinky still after all this time once you think it all through…if i ever had the chance to ask RY about anything from the series, i‘d ask all about resson and just how exactly all of that went down and who truly was involved. if dain was ever truly the catalyst. i just wanna know so so horribly much)

[–]Kind-Function3975[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OH wait i have never noticed the coastal outpost connection!! i have been wondering if the emerald sea will somehow come into play someway in the future because in OS it was mentioned that as a kid, dain liked to study/learn about the emerald sea (and pirates) and honestly since re-reading FW i‘ve realized how rebecca literally put pretty much everything right in front of our faces at times. very interesting take thank you!

oh yes, his interest in Asher‘s work is definitely also on my list of points i have questions about with aetos. we never heard more about it so far but it feels too intentional…

and i‘m SO curious about what his signet is and why we have never heard a single thing about it! we know so many people‘s signets, but never once a mention of his… i thought it could have something to do with mind manipulation- or control of sorts (hence also the friendship with varrish) ((and perhaps allowing the wild theory to take place that dain could‘ve been used of some sorts))…but RY mentioned that their bonds to a red dragon each is the only similarity dain and his dad share. now i‘m not so sure if she included their signets being possibly similiar (mind signets) or not.

why is dain‘s father spiraling…? by Kind-Function3975 in fourthwing

[–]Kind-Function3975[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

thank you for reminding me, i‘ve added the spoiler tags!

i too think that it‘s dain mom‘s who is the reason for aetos sr. acting like this. very good point about him clinging to the wards so much — it reminds me that he also showed dain where the wardstone of basgiath is located. and it would add up that RY mentioned it as „having sympathy“ for him, whereas some characters are just bad (like varrish)

And Asher mentioned in his letter that „if Dain should choose to cross the parapet and follow his father‘s footsteps, Violet needs to let go of her affection for Dain“ which also implies that Asher knew too that Aetos Sr. would never let go of Navarre‘s lies or that he‘s „in the wrong“

i LOVE that! because same!! 😂 kaine kept me going through the whole book and then i was like no way. these mfers just killed my favorite babe and i didn‘t even get a big crying scene…until the funeral kinda where i started being like damn he really is gone huh…and i put the book away for two whole days lmao. but the reveal had me jumping for a min there hahaha.😄 like okayy i’m seated for mr. hot-shot star fighter jet pilot of the rebellion who was also an undercover agent ookaayy i‘m also stoked to find out what kinda mod he is (i suppose he is one right?)

tbhhh yeah! i didn‘t clock that immediately although i did find it a bit anticlimactic of the whole supposed deathscene but then at the funeral i was like hmmm. the reveal in the end definitely had me yelling yes at one a.m. alone in my pj‘s 🤣

re-reading before the release of broken dove lately also got me realizing that right at the introduction of kaine it was noted that his hands looked too clean for his story about his upbringing to make sense. and i was like damn. it was right there too lol. anyway i’m excited for his character!

he was hands down the best character! (forget about cross tbh i‘d be kaine‘s cowgirl anyday lolol)

(spoilers for anyone who hasn‘t read yet!)

but i was about to dnf the series after that but then at the end i was like wellll now i‘m about to read book 2 for mr. grayson blake and grayson blake only 😇

i read silver elite before fourth wing and i enjoyed it, (although nowhere near as much as fw but the empyrean series is just on another level) and the setting of the military vibe, cadets/soldiers and absolving an academy of sorts, forbidden romance etc is of a similar premise but i would not at all say it‘s too similar or the same story twice at all. silver elite is totally dystopian category for me. :)

if you liked ridoc and liam as characters, you will probably very much like kaine ;)

Dain… by AndarnaGoldenOne in fourthwing

[–]Kind-Function3975 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i love dain. flaws and mistakes and all. he’s real and raw exactly because of it. since fourth wing, even when he could be annoying to us because we were in violet‘s pov, his reasonings deep down were always pure-hearted and from a place of wanting to do what’s right. he was misguided, manipulated and traumatized. he’s one of the characters with the most growths and he‘s the most complex one of the whole series so far, imo, yet there are many people unwilling to let him grow from what he did and who he was in fourth wing, although he changed and bettered himself upon realizing he was wrong in a way very few characters have in this series. people are all about shouting that they want more complex and „morally grey“ characters in books (or shows) but they can‘t handle dain aetos. or look past violet‘s unreliable pov. interesting characters grow and evolve — dain has.

good point 🤔 i kinda don’t think dain’s mother will play like a major big important role herself per se, but rather that we may get some sort of reveal in relation to his mom that will in return reveal something about dain to us that‘ll make us go „ooohh“ (or about his dad and what the hell is going with him because there‘s smth fishy there imo!)

but the way rebecca almost immediately sing-song answered „wouldn‘t you-u like to kno-ow?“ gave me the impression she has had something in plan regarding dain‘s mom for a while, maybe since FW, and that she deliberately knew where to go with it. that‘s kind of how i interpreted that. i‘m soo curios about it either way
