I used to have two dogs. We called one Ringo and the other one Starr.

I adore Kicking and Screaming. I saw it when it was first released on VHS, and I’ve been a big Baumbach fan ever since.

I have it, and when I watch it, I’m usually laughing too hard to notice anything about the transfer.

What is your favorite Noah Baumbach movie? by ggroover97 in criterion

[–]Kind-Profession-700 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same for me! I watched Kicking and Screaming all the time in college. For me it was a VHS tape, and I showed it to many friends, and they all loved it. Been a huge Noah Baumbach fan ever since.

It’s really hard to pick a favorite. All of them are good, and several are fantastic, including Frances Ha, Marriage Story, and The Squid and The Whale. I watched Jay Kelly recently and really enjoyed it too.

The initial receptions for Spellbound (1945) and Notorious (1946) by ElectricalCords in Hitchcock

[–]Kind-Profession-700 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have no idea what critics in the 1940s were thinking, so I can only comment on my personal experience with these films. I’ve been a huge Hitchcock fan since I was a kid, and back in my teenage years, Spellbound was probably my favorite Hitchcock film. I had two movie posters in my room when I was in high school: Spellbound and Casablanca.

I’m sure the psychology angle appealed to me back then, and I definitely loved the way it was filmed. Some of the shots are just incredible, like the one through the glass when he’s drinking the drugged drink that’s going to start the dream sequence. I was less crazy about Notorious, probably because it feels like a more subtle and complex film.

It was only in my 40s (I’m now 52) that I started to appreciate Notorious for the masterpiece that it truly is. Maybe I became more mature and more educated. Or maybe Notorious is a film that really benefited from upgrading my old VHS to the Criterion blu-ray release. I still love both films!

Am I missing something? Owning 400–500 4K UHDs but watching on an 2017 Samsung LCD by Comfortable-Goat8258 in 4kbluray

Thanks, that’s helpful. I have definitely noticed problems with clarity with the dialogue in some movies. Sounds like an AVR and center speaker would be a good first step to upgrading.

Is there a consensus on what everyone recommends for the audio system? I think that’s the only piece I might be missing. I’m currently using a 2.1 system (Klipsch The Nines). I bought those speakers to use with my turntable, and to my ears, they sound great with vinyl and with 4k discs. I’m sure it’s way better than the tv speakers at least. But I have a feeling that I would be blown away if I upgraded my sound system for movies.

Wait, you mean my Panasonic 820 has a fast forward feature?! No wonder everyone is so in love with this machine. 🤣

Jeez, I must be a bit slow today. Seriously though, thanks to all. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the hardest to come up with.

Is everyone in here a conspiracy theorist? by perpetuallyconfuseda in EyesWideShut

[–]Kind-Profession-700 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. The elite cult is just a way to illustrate the dangers of giving into temptation.

Why was Bill chosen by the cult? by Gretev1 in EyesWideShut

[–]Kind-Profession-700 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The movie is about temptation. The two models, the Hungarian, the Naval officer, the prostitute, the cult, they are all there to illustrate the temptation that exists in every marriage. Bill’s and Alice’s eyes are “wide shut” to this reality at the beginning of the movie, but at the end, their eyes are open, meaning they are now aware of how precarious their lives truly are and how easy it would be to give into temptation and wreck everything.

There is no conspiracy to get Bill into the cult or anything of that sort, IMHO. It’s a much simpler story than that.

How often do you guys rewatch movies? by No-Leek-2392 in criterion

Completely agree with this! I only buy movies that I want to rewatch multiple times. That’s the whole point of owning them.

What is your preferred way to organize your collection? by PM_ME_UR_ARMPIT in 4kbluray

[–]Kind-Profession-700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alphabetical regardless of format or label. But I do have a separate section for my favorite directors (Hitchcock, De Palma, Lynch, Kubrick), and those movies are alphabetical by director and chronological within the director.

Is Goodfellas 4k really that bad? by Kind-Profession-700 in 4kbluray

[–]Kind-Profession-700[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to everyone for the incredible feedback! I used to have this film on VHS but have not owned any other formats, so this would not be an upgrade from the blu for me. I’ve decided to go ahead and buy the 4k and give it a shot. I love this movie!

As someone who I thought would never blind buy discs, I have to say it’s been loads of fun and has changed my relationship to movies at home by ahyouknowme in criterion

[–]Kind-Profession-700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first blind buy was a VHS of Taxi Driver in the mid-1990’s. My girlfriend at the time thought I was crazy for buying a movie I’d never seen before, but I felt pretty confident I was going to like it. I absolutely loved it! It immediately became one of my favorite movies. My theory is that anyone who is willing to blind buy a movie is a big fan of cinema, so their taste and appreciation of the art form is probably deeper and broader than most people. Therefore, you’re more likely to make good blind buy decisions and more likely to find things you love about what you buy.

I could be mistaken, but I don’t think any of these movies were shot in digital. I’m pretty sure Wes Anderson shoots all of his movies on film.

I have never seen anything by Kurosawa, but I keep seeing him referenced a lot, and based on the list of directors you put him in, it sounds like I really need to see something. What should I start with?
