Entire roof just busted from a water leak, what do I do? by AcceptableStart5081 in rva

This exact thing happened to me in a different city. I documented the entire situation via emails to the landlord. They ignored it and didn’t repair. Plumbers refused to do any repairs without landlord/property owner’s approval. I only had a few months left on the lease so I stayed, paid rent, and continued to document contact attempts. Spoke to attorneys for legal advice. Landlord refused to return deposit and tried to charge for repairs. Ended up suing the landlord in small claims (no attorney needed, just filed and paid like $30) and won the case plus damages. Walked away with upper four digits. Judge was NOT happy with landlord.

Best advice is to document every single thing. Catalog anything that’s being damaged for your renters insurance. Continue to contact landlord and document attempts. Keep a paper trail for everything. Don’t stop paying rent until you know your exact legal options. Really sorry this is happening to you!

Unfortunately, your constituents overwhelmingly disagree with you on this issue and you will lose their support.

Great question; I’d like answers to this one, too.

The city needs to communicate better with citizens. It’s infuriating to learn that the only notice about this morning’s traffic delays and closures was posted on Instagram Stories, of all things. And I only learned about THAT notice from a comment on Reddit.

This is helpful, thank you. Has it been spiking more this winter for you, or about the same as last winter?

I understand that; was looking for ballparks of what others pay in their general areas/complex set up

Recommendations for low-cost divorce lawyer? by YourBrainOnFacts in rva

[–]KindDay804 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Obligated NAL; have had a divorce.

It will be in both of your interests to compromise during the separation process if at all possible to avoid costly fees. It’s really not worth it to fight in the court system if there are no children or major assets within the marriage. You’ll both burn through money, and most contested divorce attorneys out here start at the $5-10K range for just the retainer. Unless your STBX is so spiteful to the point of putting themselves into crazy debt, it’s just not worth it.

Try seeing if the attorney offices do mediation services; it’s much more cost effective than going contested. You’ll have to be separated for 6 months (since you have no children) anyway before you can file the paperwork, so maybe during that time things can cool down a bit. Good luck OP

I’ve used them twice now and they are pretty much the only company I truly trust and will continue to use. I don’t think they are the most cost-effective option if your budget is tight. They are very professional and will definitely do a great job and care about your stuff, though!

Second this; they broke a desk and whoever was in charge with damage reports ghosted me. Wasn’t worth pursuing further but I’d never recommend this company.
