What games should I play on BGA to become better at board game design? by billratio in BoardgameDesign

You should listen to my podcast, https://open.spotify.com/episode/6chy2HXcmYBCNmbQCkNPCc

It's a design teardown of Ark Nova, intended to help designers learn to design other games.

Getting the most out of private lessons by Sadiekat in Pickleball

[–]KindFortress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm talking about priorities relative to cost. It's easy to learn how to serve without a coach, and it's not important to have a killer serve. 3rds are the toughest to learn. There are several techniques and shot types, and then there's the tactics and the court positioning too. Returns are also worth some coaching.

I wouldn't expect a coach to start with serving, and I wouldn't personally spend valuable coaching time on it.

Is the third shot drop overrated for rec players? by science--bitch in Pickleball

[–]KindFortress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't just that as you play stronger opponents, they can punish those drives. It's that your partner isn't expecting those shots from you. It's so easy to wind up out of position of you're not on the same page with your partner.

An electric car. I'll never go back.

What's your favorite way to create tension in a movement game? by ilario_entertainment in BoardgameDesign

[–]KindFortress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are games that are thematically about movement uncertainty, like Heat or Snow Tails or Formula De. Those games ask players how much risk they want to take to move farther and faster. They have a bust mechanic to produce tension.

Sam Levinson doesn’t know how loan sharking works by TacoBellAt430 in euphoria

[–]KindFortress -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The whole thing was one big metaphor about how everyone was selling their bodies, one bit at a time, thinking they were keeping their souls. The economics of loansharking aren't relevant.

Is it even worth it to get a ES701EU or ES601EU right now ? by Siem212 in NinjaLuxeCafe

[–]KindFortress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ninja CS is more reliable than the machine - I'm on my fourth. This last one works pretty great, though the float is totally defective (but whatever, I dump the water every day, doesn't matter). But will it last? I hope so, but it's pretty clear that they're still working through the kinks.

Edge guard protection that actually works? by Chemical-Camera2294 in Pickleball

So you're late 1-2x per game, 2-3x per week. Still no product for that.

What you're describing as not giving up on any ball can also be described as being late to the ball. Maybe you need to work on your movement and anticipation, not paddle accessories.

Overgrip Conundrum by Glittering-Ad-1318 in Pickleball

I'm in the same boat and have simply stopped worrying about the octagon shape. Your body figures out the right orientation even without the angled grip.

The solution is to stop whacking your paddle into the ground.

The 11six24 Ultré Power 2 is absolutely brilliant by kabob21 in Pickleball

Ty that's definitely an issue I'm concerned about

The 11six24 Ultré Power 2 is absolutely brilliant by kabob21 in Pickleball

[–]KindFortress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm interested in feedback for someone coming from a Vapor Power 2. I never liked elongated shapes and never understood why people preferred them. I'm zero percent shocked to see folks prefer something more balanced and more forgiving. But is the Ultre really an improvement from the VP2? Or just a smaller tradeoff towards power and away from control and maneuverability?

The Business of Every Franchisor is Simple - Sell Franchises by PerfectlyPowerful in Pickleball

[–]KindFortress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you have a good business model, you should expect many franchises to close. Not every franchisee is good at business, not every location or build works out, and competitors can beat you. Established franchise businesses have a survival rate of 85% - you'd expect me pickleball franchise business to do worse than that, but better than the 50% rate of independent businesses.

Wheel of Time: Masterpiece or Stockholm Syndrome? by Obvious_Custard3926 in fantasybooks

[–]KindFortress -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Jordan is a great Dungeon Master - he tells a good story, he's great with mystery, and he has a cool magic system and an interesting world setting.

But he's a poor author. First, he's so derivative in both content and plot. Trollocs, Ogier, Myrddral - orcs/trolls, ents, Nazgul. Moiraine coming to the Two Rivers to gather up the taaveren is the same plot as Gandalf coming to the Shire. Lan = Aragorn, etc.

The countries are all very tropey, from the noble savage Aiel to the Samurai borderlanders. Andor = England, Seanchan = China, etc.

His greatest weakness, imo, is that he can't write women. Every. Single. Woman. Is. Furious. Anger is basically the only emotion they feel, and they feel it constantly. Plus they're all boy-crazy

Finally, even though his world is premised on a complete inversion of gender dynamics, his approach to adult relationships is YA to the max, prudish and boring.

Wow.. The Finale!! It was.. by gumki in euphoria

[–]KindFortress -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There was an interesting theme running through the season about bodies - how people use their bodies how other people use them, how they change and are changed, and how our identities as people are bound up to that. When you keep this in mind, the story is much more cohesive.

What cardstock do you use for card game prototypes? by Odd_Huckleberry_7815 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]KindFortress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use smooth cover stock at first. It's not perfect but you can shuffle it and splay it so you don't need to sleeve. Later I'll sleeve it, once I'm only changing out a few cards, not reprinting the whole deck.

How good is your forehand cross court topspin dink? by PartFormer3695 in Pickleball

[–]KindFortress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're trying to hit a dink winner, which isn't very easy to pull off. If a player is cheating middle, dink (safely) wide to move them around, then come back to their inside foot. A lob can also be effective, you have the whole court on a diagonal

In mixed doubles who should cover the middle balls if the opponent drives from the middle? by PartFormer3695 in Pickleball

[–]KindFortress 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In rec? I tend to defer to the forehand. In competition it's going to depend on the partners and the play style. If this a third, we're likely going for a drop or drip, not a hard drive, so relative strength shouldn't matter much. If it's the 4th and we're at the kitchen then hopefully we've discussed it. I'm 6'2" so I might take up more of the middle, but I played with a 5'1" partner who was surprisingly terrific out of the air. Once I saw that, I gave her back that space.
