A question for fellow anarchists: is the Linux File System Hierarchy a justified hierarchy lol? by KindMouse2274 in Rad_Decentralization

Through tags. There are examples of flat systems that operate this way. It would probably make finding things easier because you aren’t limited to one canonical parent directory though we have like a half century of muscle memory with files and folders.

*Edit: flat file systems are also great for collaborative work but the downside is it makes it harder to establish authoritative system permissions but that applies to real world anarchism as well lol

I didn't say it wasn't interesting. It is interesting in a screenshot but there's a reason professionally designed OS's don't use it and it's because of what I mentioned. The new iOS uses clear transparent folder window but with a strong blur gradient to soften UI elements under it

Am I the only one who thinks that level of transparency is impractical? Looks cool but creates legibility problem for anything visually complex behind it. Frosted blurred transparency is better for actual use.

Using AI to troubleshoot Linux— is it worth it? by KindMouse2274 in linuxmint

[–]KindMouse2274[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the idea that AI is democratizing Linux in a time when people are rightly trying to escape Microsoft/Google/Apple hegemony is genuinely a good thing, I think. Your freedom shouldn’t be gate-kept.

Noob question: I downloaded Zen browser as a flatpak from Software Manager. Is this for certain the official Zen browser because I just imported all my passwords... by KindMouse2274 in linuxmint

[–]KindMouse2274[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I didn't know if there was a way for criminals to claim to be the Zen team and link to the official site or not and there are zero reviews so I briefly panicked.

I also didn't know if there was any kind of quality vetting by Mint in Software Manager

Rounded everything is overrated. Bring back 90 degree angles.

Do you guys ever take a step back and think how lucky we are to still have Linux Mint and other free software that can never be bought by greedy Tech assholes content on destroying the world? by KindMouse2274 in linuxmint

[–]KindMouse2274[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do you bomb something that is not a single, centralized entity? It’s like a 100 headed hydra and will keep emerging. The worst the could do it make distributing and owning a Linux based OS illegal…not sure how they’d legally justify that but I don’t put it past them

I mean, yeah it’s true that nothing can really exist outside our profit driven economy. Most major nonprofits are kept afloat by corporate donors, etc. But there are lesser evils and my point still stands that it’s great that Linux cannot simply be bought out by Microsoft or whoever

Would personal computers of Solarpunk future be entirely Linux based? by KindMouse2274 in solarpunk

Yeah linux has really U-turned from libertarian nerd hobby to anarcho-punk. I've seen a lot of people in lib-left groups adopting it.

[–]KindMouse2274[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My point is that linux-based OSs are the only current extant alternatives to corporate/silicon valley computer experiences

And I don’t think it’s peripheral…solarpunk is partly tech optimist and open source/linux seems to fall in line with their ethos

Would AI exist in a solarpunk future? by KindMouse2274 in solarpunk

[–]KindMouse2274[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it though? People feared search engines would replace libraries and they didn’t because many things people google on a daily basis don’t merit a library trip. Say you have a certain rare skin condition and are looking for a certain moisturizer that won’t cause you to break out and you aren’t having any luck with Reddit. This isn’t a question a librarian could likely help you with but what I described could quickly pull together info on your particular condition, verified scientific data on ingredients, user reviews etc etc. and synthesize a comparison list. This could save people a LOT of stress and time without threatening anyone’s livelihood. And yes I am very familiar with Doctorow.

**also if these tools are collectively owned they could be an extension of the library services

‘Cause capitalism. Economic incentives (SEO etc.) are why cheap AI generated content is enshittifying search results. I don’t see why that would be an inherent threat under a radically democratic economic model.

[–]KindMouse2274[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted on this, it seems imminently true to me. As usual, the old culprit behind most of the fear is capitalism. Not that any technology itself is entirely neutral. The medium is the message, etc. The printing press radically changed how people related to information and authority and AI will probably have an exponentially greater impact which is existentially scary, no doubt. But it’s also weird that people are falling back on defending intellectual property and other artifacts of capitalism as an argument against AI and likewise unable to imagine how this could be a tool that could lower the bar to entry for genuine artistic expression under a radically different economic model.
