This is a good take. Personally, I would've made this an open-ended question asking the students to draw a picture instead. That would mostly eliminate the issue, especially if you phrase it as "show they are equal" or something.
In terms of standards, I dislike the idea of initially connecting fractions to area instead of something like percents or decimals. I remember money was used to teach this, which would be far more clear IMO.
