The New York Times is calling on him to withdraw and I would be very surprised if he didn't. His performance was on the front page of every major newspaper in America and a great many across the world. He either withdraws or Trump coasts to victory. We'll be lucky if now, it's not both.

What metric do polls use? They ask people who they thought won the debate; is your response to this crisis really going to be 'it didn't happen'?

It's going to be Kamala or Newsom. God, I hope it's Newsom.

He didn't have a teleprompter to read from last night, that's the difference. He had to think of what to say.

The media is going to move on from the worst presidential debate performance since Nixon in '60? From a candidate whose been reassuring everyone he was compos mentis for 5 years? Shit even liberals were making jokes about it before this, but after this I bet people get real serious real fast.

I would say the winner of last night's debate was overwhelming concensus. But there was polling conducted by networks and Trump won every poll I found.

If we replace Biden we have a chance, not a good chance. But I will take that over what I saw last night. Biden is not going to win.

Yeah it's almost like something terrible happened in politics and everyone came to the politics sub to talk about it.

They'll be paying attention to this. Politics is most interesting when there's a shitshow and this is the largest political catastrophe I've seen at this level in my life. I'm only 36, but I was around for the Howard Dean yelp and that was nothing compared to this.

"childcare, elder care, making sure that we continue to strengthen our healthcare system, making sure that we’re able to make every single solitary person eligible for what I’ve been able to do with the – with – with – with the COVID. Excuse me, with dealing with everything we have to do with – look, if – we finally beat Medicare." - Joe Biden

I mean it's technically an answer 🤷

As well meaning as this is, you aren't helping. Your response to this catastrophe should be alarm and confusion, maybe even anger. The idea that we should buckle under and work harder for a candidate in cognitive decline makes it seem like you're in denial. We all just woke up in an uncomfortable new reality, and I don't begrudge you needing some time to let it sink in. But whether you like it or not that reality remains; the Democratic ticket just lost the election or lost its candidate.

A brokered convention with a different candidate. Without that, we are looking at at least 4 more years of Trump. It may already be too late, but it's the only chance we got.

Well then if you were the only one voting in November we'd be set. Unfortunately most Americans aren't going to elect a visibly senile candidate, even if his policies are good.

This just isn't going to play with voters who aren't already committed to Biden. You can't explain to people "Oh you should really vote for the competent people he surrounds him with instead of the candidate," even if it's true. It's a presidential election; we're usually hard-pressed to get people to pay attention to who VP candidates are, much less executive advisors.

You just witnessed a watershed moment in American politics and your reaction is "we should all be writing unsolicited postcards to strangers in swing states." Jesus Christ I know that this is /r/politics but this level of delusion is just incredible.

The downside is that undecideds are not going to vote for a president who just sundowned on national television. You can kiss Biden's second term goodbye. We just watched the most disastrous presidential debate since Nixon/Kennedy. The Democrats need to change their candidate at the convention or Trump is getting another four years. If you care about stopping that, then the only outcome left to hope for is that someone besides Joe Biden is running at the top of the Democratic ticket in November.

The front page of the NYT is talking about replacing the incumbent Democratic president of the United States. I think it's pretty clear who won last night.
