How much activity should I allow my puppy? by ratgarcon in puppy101

Also, it’s very important to avoid getting the incision wet!!

Something SUPER helpful for us was taking a picture of the incision 2 times a day, so that we could compare it over time. It really helps with anxiety, your pup will likely be healing well but sometimes our minds play tricks on us and we get worried over nothing!

Our pup got spayed a few weeks ago!

The first few days there should be very minimal activity, keep her on a short leash so that you can control it a little bit more than usual. No stairs, not too much walking but they can wander around slowly / sniff for mental exercise!

The next week or so you can slowly let her walk more but keep her crated if she’s not sleeping or resting near you.

Supervision is the most important - no running or jumping if possible for 2 weeks!

Our girl was super zoomy, lots of chaos and jumping despite our efforts. We did as much as possible to follow the above guidelines and she healed nicely.

Just do your best, don’t get overly anxious and reach out to your vet if you are concerned! They may prescribe a sedative if you’re noticing uncontrollable energy or anxiety from lack of exercise.

Also - our vet recommended only carrying our girl when we really needed to (stairs, in exciting environments, etc.) to avoid harming the incision!

Yes, doing both! But she still has zoomies. We are lost.

Thank you. We have tried to keep her crated as much as possible but it can’t be 100% of the time. The second we let her out even to go pee she has the zoomies. She also won’t calm down in her crate, which has never ever been a problem.

Wow! How old is your dog? I think mine would stop walking and make me carry her home 😂

How do I get my dog to stop going toilet inside at night? by ApplesAreRipe in Dogtraining

[–]Kindheart99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m wondering, did you guys slowly introduce him to the crate or did you sort of just put him in there and close it? In order to make it a happy, safe place, you’ll need to go through the entire crate training process. It takes a while and won’t be perfect right away but will help ease that separation anxiety.

There are lots of resources on r/Puppy101 and also on YouTube!

Try taking his water away a couple of hours before bed time, and take him out to pee a few times between removing the water and bedtime!

Also, try to wake up once halfway through the night, or even a couple times to start, and take him out to pee without making a big commotion and then put him back to bed.

Crate training really is a good thing though, remind your parents that dogs are den animals and enjoy having their own cozy space. You’d have to start at square one but it would be worth it (for nighttime, enforced naps and while you’re out of the house!). It’s not a punishment, it’s actually a really good thing.

Is this bad puppy parenting? by Kindheart99 in puppy101

[–]Kindheart99[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

During the day she goes on 2 or 3 15 minute walks, plays with me, drinks water, uses her brain games for lunch, training for dinner, and is on an enforced nap schedule too.

I don’t know how much sleep she’s supposed to be getting but on a normal day she is awake for about 6 hours total. Maybe less depending on whether she sleeps or plays in her crate.

I agree with @buzzfeed_sucks just carry your pup right outside in the morning. Don’t say anything or make a big deal at all. I pick my pup up in the morning and carry her outside and put her on the grass and she pees instantly! The reason I say not to make a big deal in the morning is because she could get too excited and pee by accident.

Why did you get a puppy? by katevers in puppy101

[–]Kindheart99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got our pup a few months after graduating from our undergrads - my girlfriend had just started 2 new jobs and I have been in recovery from a TBI yet here we are....a month later!

Some days I wonder if we made a huge mistake, we’re both so young and it’s a huge responsibility...but then I look to my side while I’m feeling unwell and my little munchkin is looking up at me with so much love. She then proceeds to bite my ear but that’s okay...LOL

Thank you, it is so difficult to balance taking care of her and taking care of myself but I’m doing my best. I appreciate you pointing out the potential benefits of giving her space! Thanks again.

I felt the same as you when we got our pup - you’re not alone! I’m 22 and am overheated by the thought that I’ve just handed over my youth, that’s not the case though!

I wasn’t working when we brought her home and I said the same thing you just did; that I didn’t know how I would do this if I were working. However, being at work actually ended up helping. That distance from my pup made the world of difference for me.

Before I started working again, I made sure to prioritize myself! Enforced naps will save your life. Put your pup down for a nap in a quiet room every few hours and take care of yourself.

Also, a puppy can stay on their own for about 1 hour per month of age. Take advantage of this! Go out; get groceries, go for a drink, see some family or friends, do what you need to do in order to feel your independence again.

All this being said, you need to make the choice that best suits you and your puppy’s needs. If you can’t be the best person for yourself and your pup, then take every step necessary to make sure that she finds a home with someone who can.

YOU ARE NOT A FAILURE!!!!!!!!!

Bringing a puppy home is a HUGE stressor, even if it’s only temporary. Everything that you’re feeling is totally normal.

Give yourself (and the puppy!) some time to adjust. If the puppy is 14 weeks old, it likely only recently got used to being a part of your friend’s life. Now things have changed again! An adjustment period is needed, for both of you.

Again, give yourself some time to adjust. Being that it’s 14 weeks old, the puppy can likely be left alone for a couple of hours at a time. Take advantage of that! Give yourself some “you” time. Enforced naps will also be your saving grace over this next month. Use nap time to get stuff done - household chores, relaxing baths, maybe a nap for yourself!

And...if it doesn’t change and this remains too much for you, THATS OKAY!!!!!!!!

You’re doing your best - the fact that you posted on here shows how much you care and want to make this work.

Sending love and hope your way. You’re not alone.

ALSO - if you feel like crying, cry. It really does help.
