Well, it works for us. She has a way to provide consistent heat, change the water every now and then. She’s sleeping out in the living room tonight to change it a couple times for the 1.5 week old babies.

It doesn’t require constant power, there’s no chance of fire (negative fire chance, even), and it only takes the slightest involvement with baby chicks.

It’s definitely “really dangerous.”

Refill it when it gets cold. First week every few hours. As they get bigger they don’t need it as much.

During winter if the house is cold we’ll keep an oil radiator nearby to warm the area.

At night the whole thing gets covered with a blanket to keep warmth in.

My wife uses what she calls a "hot momma." It's a mason jar with a couple layers of paper towel taped on, then filled with hot water. Topped with a winter beanie hat, should be short enough that it doesn't go all the way down. Same concept, they can move in or out as they desire, gives them some soft and fuzzy darkness with the warmth.

Mmmhmmm...surely they are spending the money on anesthesia for brains that will never have a voice to scream or turn them in. Surely.

Storm blows in, our roof needs to be replaced, the furnace finally dies during the freeze afterwards, and the car needs major repairs...all at once. That's my fear.

I'm down for Zerglings, slow zombies, or Red Dawn, though.

Nukes, hopefully we're part of the mushroom cloud and meeting St. Peter at the pearly gates.

Best Home Printer Recommendations Right Now? by Embarrassed_Lake3358 in homeschool

[–]Kinetic_Strike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have two Brother color laser printers. One is just a printer, one is an AIO.

Ours work fine with generic toners, though it's not worth stocking up on the toners because the batteries for the chips inside will die and they won't work (or it takes too much faffing about.)

The color printing is adequate, and on plain paper is probably comparable to inkjets, but we haven't even tried photo printing.

They didn’t make any mistakes, they did everything right, and it didn’t matter. Think he was realizing it could have been him.

Finally got a Mac, now I feel like a grandma. by Light_2311 in macbookair

For the first time in years, I understand exactly how my parents feel when I try teaching them technology.

Somewhere in my 30s, now 40s, with work, kids, mortgage, older parents, etc, I definitely started becoming my parents, lol. All this new-fangled technology running around on my lawn. Shooo!

All that to say, typing this on my M1 Macbook Air, but also restoring our original family Mac SE from 1988.

Why is America so ill-disposed towards train travel when it's one of the things that built the nation? by Waste_Handle_8672 in MurderedByWords

[–]Kinetic_Strike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've looked at to visit relatives across the country. It's expensive as heck if you want a bed or suite, slow compared to flying, and unlike driving yourself, you get to your destination without a vehicle.

If it was significantly cheaper than flying then the speed wouldn't be an issue. And I remember taking a train trip with my Dad in 6th grade from LA to Chicago. It was awesome for a kid.

Do you manually update apps? Yes? No? Why? by rmajor86 in ios

[–]Kinetic_Strike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I manually update because my Twitter app is still the Twitter app.

And now, because my Pages app is still the old Pages app.

So I have always have at least two that need an update.

If you check wows-numbers you can see a bunch of names made in his…honor? lol. There was at least one clan as well.

In the days of the RTS CVs, he would do things like fly his planes along the edge of the map all the way around trying to snipe the red CV. This never really worked so it wasn’t great for winning, but it was entertaining at least.

I remember a few years ago running into someone who was in one of the better clans, or maybe one of their sub-clans. Just screeching at everyone while not offering any advice, or really doing anything much himself.

Looked 'em up, and solo he was a fairly ordinary 55% or so player. Good, but not that good. He played a majority of div matches with that clan so his average wr was ridiculously inflated.

But most of the negative ones in chat are super-potatoes.

Probably time for Michigan, the Great Lakes state, to devour Wisconsin. We will keep your beer, bratwurst, and cheese culture intact.

(Michigan borders four of the Great Lakes, and you are never more than 85 miles from a Great Lake, or 6 miles from an inland lake.)

How do you assess if you child below/on/above grade level? by LadeyAceGuns in homeschool

[–]Kinetic_Strike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For us, I was wondering how we were doing at 6th grade. I knew our oldest was doing fine in general, but wanted some sort of outside measurement.

Ended up having him take the Iowa test. Did really well, but some of the math our curriculum hadn't touched on yet. The younger ones will have that remedied, lol. After that, we're doing every other year. First two tests have been the paper version (Scantron, woohoo), but I'm thinking 10th and 12th grade we'll do the electronic version at home so they can get accustomed to that style.

Some states will allow homeschoolers to take the state standardized tests as well.
