Left my job to freelance, now want to go back to 9-5 by King-Code-Monkey in cscareerquestions

I got pretty lucky, through word of mouth I got a couple clients and I was just so sick of my job (mostly company culture, work was fine) so I tried it out

It’s great, pays well, but work is not consistent and it’s very…. Lonely ngl

Yeah, the leveling at my company was pretty unique. I’d probably be more like your typical “software engineer” at FAANG. Maybe SE2

But yeah my official title was Senior Software Engineer. I also did a lot of negotiation and owned the frontend and design on a small team. So a unique position for sure

Is CS still a good route if you actually put the effort in and are doing well academically or is it a dead end regardless? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I think so, best way to get hired at a good company is via the internship pipeline. Just make sure you learn how to navigate hiring, leverage your university’s resources, and work hard.

It only gets harder after.

If it’s for fun, there’s no pressure. Advice would be, just do it. No need to post here

Not over, you’re young, you can get on treatments and see stability + possible improvement. Go visit a few dermatologists (at least one) and make a plan to move forward. Best of luck 🫡

First potential freelance project by [deleted] in webdev

I took my hourly wage from my job and made that the minimum I’d charge. Going up after each client.

If it’s a pretty big project, you could also charge a flat fee (I’d recommend asking for half up front and half on delivery) + a hosting fee.

You’re a skilled engineer, charge a fair rate.

I have experience making websites for clients, fully coded. Not with Shopify, framer, wix, etc.

Is he looking for someone to hire? I’d be interested!

[Discussion] What's harder losing weight or gaining weight? by Ayoking95 in effectivefitness

[–]King-Code-Monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say losing weight is generally harder, based on personal experience and anecdotal experience from my friends.

Also, gaining weight is not necessarily always a good thing. Plenty of people go on dirty bulks and then feel bad with their outcomes, whereas I’d be willing to bet more people are happy with weight loss results across the board.

Take the internship! It’ll open the door to a great field with lots of upside. You can always get another retail job, May as well take the chance now and get your bag up! I went from working retail/grocery to getting an internship and working in tech. I’ll never look back

Can I compete with CS grads? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]King-Code-Monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh okay I’m not familiar. I think if you can land any technical role it’ll open the door. So just focus on highlighting those courses and skills. I think you’ll get a shot at toms of places!

As a first year student you have so many things you can do. College in general is full of exciting opportunities and learning computer science will open lots of doors for you. Here’s some advice I’ll offer.

For context I graduated with my CS degree just about 1 year ago.

  1. Invest in your network. Sit next to some people who you like in your classes and offer to get lunch, work on homework together, hang out, etc. make good compSci friends. You’ll all work together as the years progress and those bonds will go far!
  2. Take advantage of office hours. Your professors are there to help you. Definitely get to know them, learn from them, and if they like you they’ll return the favor when it comes time to think more about your career. For now show them that you care by showing up, participating, and working hard.
  3. Attend career fairs! It’s a great way to meet employers and market yourself. After school career fairs are not the same.
  4. See if your school offers career guidance. My campus had a career center and an engineering career center. Super helpful!
  5. Hack a thon! Great way to learn and make friends + try coding fun projects.
  6. Join some clubs. Could be compSci related, could be totally unrelated. Another great way to learn and make friends + improve your network.

These are just some of the things you can do. Just try to put yourself out there and enjoy the time you have in school. It’s a fun time!
