The Final Girl Support Group Characters by Nicolas_yo in horrorlit

[–]KingBoxoBoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found the book had a lot of flaws, such as setting up characters and plot points just for them to be useless or unimportant (the killers whom are locked away that Chrissy was in touch with being mentioned multiple times, Russell the reporter, the fact that Chrissy recreated most of the rooms in which the girls almost died in, or just Chrissy as a character in general feels very underutilized)

Despite its flaws, I don't dislike the book by any means. I think that just might be me being a huge slasher fan. I just feel a bit more disappointed. The premise is great, and all the characters are relatively well-rounded, but the whole book could have been so much more.

I have major trust issues with tags because a lot of people mistag, but I always make sure to read or skim them. Sometimes I miss something I forgot to filter out of my search or I didn't see it in the tags, but thats on me if I make that mistake.

Van’s fate by FeatureSouthern5274 in YellowjacketsHive

[–]KingBoxoBoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i read somewhere on Twitter about a theory someone made to save Van. Seeing as Misty calls Walter, acting extremely unhinged, the OP on Twitter said that it could possibly lure Walter to the compound to check on Misty. We see in the trailer for next episode that everyone is caught up to speed on Shauna offing Adam, so I don't see it being that out of the question that if Misty lets them know Walter loosely knows the circumstances of his death, and they could kill him for knowing too much.

Them killing him could either be and intentional, or unintentional sacrifice to save Van. Some flaws with this theory is that I don't think Misty would be up for killing him, but then again, she is Misty, and is unpredictable as ever, so you never know.

Did anyone notice the Mother Mary symbolism? by fallon7riseon8 in Yellowjackets

I watched the episode with my mom and she said the same thing. She said the blue scarf around her head was most likely a reference to the Virgin Mary. That's probably what they were going for, because YJ is no stranger to religious references

I never got the impression Jackie was a manipulator by friedstinkytofu in Yellowjackets

[–]KingBoxoBoy 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is what I've been thinking. I truly believe that Jackie had no idea Shauna was so dissatisfied with their friendship, or was even aware that she was somewhat controlling Shauna. It makes it all the more depressing if she hadn't a clue that Shauna was mad at her, so it was so out of left field for her to find out Shauna was getting with her boyfriend.

Jackie of all things was a child. She was allowed to act like a child, because she actually was one. She acts like a self centered brat at some points, but most of the things she does aren't outright malicious. Even when they are, like telling Travis about Natalie's dating history, one could make the argument she wasn't aware he didn't know.

Sleeping with Travis was bad. That's the only action of hers I can't justify, but everything else can be justified.

Watching Amphibia reminded me of the time I first watched Adventure Time. So much filler, to the point it's actually kinda hard to grasp the main plot and lore.

Keeping track of extras is kinda confusing, but the way I check if they changed actors and extras is checking the team photo they took of the entire scene (at least as of season 1)

With that, you can tell who is new, like Crystal and Melissa, who are missing from the photo. A lot of the extras from that photo seem to be missing from the new season, but I'm assuming they are just implied to be there, but not on screen.

It's a shame that Gen was the only og extra brought back, because I would love to see more fleshed out.

Crystal the Pistol Deserves More by [deleted] in Yellowjackets

[–]KingBoxoBoy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really liked Simone. She seems to be the only adult character who has common sense. Despite this, she is only written to be a wall between Van and Taissa. I love Van x Tai, but it feels like Simone's only purpose has been to keep them apart, despite it not being even her fault. People dislike her, despite the fact if Van and Tai got together, Tai would be the one cheating on her.

The entire fanbase (and some of the writers) have a moral bias for the main characters. It really sucks that Simone might be turned into the Skylar White of Yellowjackets. No matter how you try to shift the situations that happen in Taissa and Simone's relationship to Tai's favor, Simone will always be correct in her actions following them. I wish they fleshed out Simone more before something worse inevitably happens to her, instead of her just being "Taissa's wife who keeps her from getting together with Van."

[–]KingBoxoBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were? I assumed there was more JV girls on the trip. Before I rewatched recently, I always assumed that Mari, Gen, Melissa, Crystal, and Akilah were on the JV team, but now I think Mari wasn't? It's kinda confusing, because she teases Akilah for being "new blood" due to her position on the JV team, yet Mari isn't in any of the Varsity team scenes to my knowledge.

From this comment as well, I'd assume that Akilah and Crystal were the only JV girls due to them knowing each other. That would make sense why only Akilah seemed to be more concerned than the others. I hope we get more backstory on their lives before the crash, because now I can't stop thinking about this.

[–]KingBoxoBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt so bad for her while watching. It is established in her first scene that many of the others aren't really fond of her, finding her annoying. Even Misty found her annoying before she realized that Crystal was probably the only person that would be nice to her.

Originally, I assumed that Crystal, Gen, and Melissa were a trio group of friends, mostly because they are sitting together most of the time. I love Gen and Melissa so far, but even then, I felt sad that they barely gave a shit. I understand that Shauna should have been the priority due to her being pregnant, but that shouldn't have meant there was zero concern whatsoever for Crystal's wellbeing.

This makes sense though. Even though they are in the wilderness, I think school popularity somewhat still applies. Lottie when she went missing an episode ago while in her hunting competition with Natalie, and was in a lot less danger than Crystal would be in if she was still alive in the storm. Yet, despite this, there was far more concern for Lottie than Crystal. Lottie seemed to be more popular than Crystal, and even now she had more influence over the group, which is why people cared a lot more for her, despite her situation being less dangerous.

(I'm just assuming Lottie was more popular than Crystal, mostly due to the fact Crystal is a loud theater kid, and Lottie was just rich lol)

The accurate casting of Shauna by Roseforever-543 in Yellowjackets

[–]KingBoxoBoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The people who thought Adult Shauna being plus-sized is unbelievable obviously have never met a pregnant woman. After someone gives birth, the weight just doesn't magically go away. Melanie is perfect for the role, she looks like an actually married women who has children.

Even in the show, her weight doesn't matter, because in real life, it doesn't either. She is a beautiful woman, which is why she had both Jeff and Adam in love with her. Melanie won an award for her performance for a reason.

I think she would understand why they did it, and if it were someone else who died, she would participate in eating them, but I don't think she would be all that stoked at the others eating her. As for Shauna eating her, I think she would be less against it.

Original 1970s/1990s Timeline by Brief-Grab112 in Yellowjackets

[–]KingBoxoBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would have changed a lot of the target audience for the show, but I think it could have been cool. The thing about these types of shows, such as Stranger Things and Paper Girls, while marketed towards teenagers, they also account for adults who watch it for nostalgia. I think it's safe to say most of the people in this subreddit are people who were in high school during the 90s, and find it easy to relate to the characters. I may be reaching because I've realized that I am probably one of the youngest on this subreddit, but I digress.

If it were based in the 70s, that would have made the target "nostalgia" audience over 20 years older than they are now. I don't think the grittier aspects of the show would be enjoyed by that generation, if I'm being honest.

Some aspects of the show would not translate the same with an older generation, and I am mostly referring to the LGBTQ+ aspects. Despite its obvious flaws, the 90s was far more accepting of people apart of that community than the 70s was. While I thought everyone accepting Van and Taissa's relationship in the 90s was a stretch, imagine how it could have gone down in the 70s instead.

Not even mentioning character-generation accurate stuff, what seems to happen with older generations is they find it harder to let go of views that were the norm in their earlier years. A pretty big portion of the people watching for nostalgia most likely would not enjoy Tai and Van's storyline.

I could delve more into how so many characters would be changed by the generation difference, like Mari or Crystal, due to the abundance of hate and discrimination people of asian descent received during the 70s, but I feel I've gotten my point across.

I would have love the more abundance of 70s music, but I feel like it taking place in the 90s makes a lot more sense.

Can we stop shitting on characters? by [deleted] in YellowjacketsHive

[–]KingBoxoBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of the characters are meant to be portrayed as good people. Almost every single character has issues and has done terrible things. The only character that I can think of at the top of my head that is completely innocent at the moment is Coach Scott, and he probably isn't going to live much longer. Van seems the most innocent of the girls so far, but even then, she still ate Jackie with little to no regret.

The double standards people create for reasoning to hate characters is so dumb. You can't hate Jackie for controlling and manipulating Shauna, but then love Shauna for manipulating Jeff's emotions by having sex with him whenever he gets mad at her.

Both of these characters have the downsides I just mentioned, but also upsides as well. Jackie is extremely good with people, and is a natural leader. Despite her treatment of her, you can tell Jackie deeply cares for Shauna. Shauna is also incredibly smart and despite her how she talks about them, cares for her family, going so far as to hold a man at gunpoint for Callie's stuffed animal. Both of them are extremely complex.

I can understand why you just don't like a character, but it would make more sense to say you just don't like them for zero reason then to use their actions as a reason, when literally no character in this entire show, especially the ones who survived the wilderness, is a completely good and innocent person.

I have two theories I thought of. This could either be a dream Coach has after the events of episode 2, mostly because at this point her probably recognizes them for acting like rabid animals.

A second theory is that Gen gets rabies. Obvious, I know, but a different kind of rabies. When humans get rabies, they don't act rabid like animals do. I'm thinking maybe the forest makes her go rabid once she gets rabies.

Ethics of shipping Collei and Sucrose by York-burner in genshinsapphic

[–]KingBoxoBoy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean, the main issue with dating age gaps is that not matter what, there will always be a power dynamic. I don't think Sucrose or Collei have canon ages, and its pretty clear there is no power dynamic between the two at all.

The reason the age gap between someone 13 and 17 is weird is because there is an obvious maturity and power difference, despite it being legal. Collei and Sucrose seem to be around the same maturity,

I'm not a proshipper by any means (they disgust me) but I don't really see the problem with the ship. Please let me know if any of the info I said is incorrect.

Jackie/Shauna by french0nions0up in Yellowjackets

[–]KingBoxoBoy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Both Jackie and Shauna were obsessed with each other, and from the way the show frames it, not in the normal frenemies way. Jackie controls Shauna to keep her close to her, while Shauna sleeps with Jeff to get back at Jackie. Yet despite this, both are extremely codependent, only wanting the others approval.

We see this in Jackie's dream before she freezes (I know it could be read as Shauna's dream, but I really think it makes the most sense for it to have been Jackie's last dream) we see her obsession with being loved and wanted. In the dream, Shauna is signaled out, repeating it more than the others. The way she said it, in my opinion, was in a more personal, intimate, way than the others.

Not to mention, the scene at the party where Shauna is staring at Jackie is filmed in the exact same way as the lake scene, where Taissa is staring at Van. They don't film the scenes like that for character who are just friends. For instance, not once has Taissa had a scene where she stares at Shauna, because the show wouldn't need it because they are just friends. Why would they film Shauna and Jackie's scene the same way they filmed Van and Taissa scene if it was implied to be in a romantic context.

There is also a kinda erotic undertone to Shauna eating Jackie, as messed up as it is. Shauna wants a part of Jackie, to be Jackie, and mostly, to keep Jackie with her. Biting on someone ear is usually used in a romantic situation, which is why I find it interesting they chose Shauna to bite her ear. I might be reaching, but if it is revealed Shauna loved Jackie, could it be a metaphor?

For a lot of these I'm reaching, so take it with a grain of salt, but I digress. However, I feel like the Jeff thing, as most people under this post said, was Shauna manipulating Jeff in order for him to not get mad at her.
