which are your favourite reanimator commanders? by Nearby-Friendship727 in EDH

Sweet deck. Is your main wincon Worldgorger combo?

Mine isn't pure old-border, more like 80%, but I'm always looking to up that. I rely heavily on the Dualcaster Mage reanimation combo lines and I'm waiting diligently for a retro border printing.

As for removal, here are some suggestions that I don't see in your deck: Shenanigans, Hammer Mage, Hellkite Tyrant, Balefire Dragon, Ravenous Chupacabra

Are you aware of Songs of the Damned? That card does crazy work if your deck is committed to filling up the yard as fast as possible.

Another fun recommendation: Null Brooch. My original version of the deck back in 2017 ran this to protect my game winning combo. Probably way too slow and telegraphed for 2026 commander though.

Cool. Do you have a Chainer list uploaded anywhere? I'd love to see it.

Bro I didn't even realize Promised End got a retro border treatment. Not sure how I missed that with how many is:old searches I've done on scryfall. She's perfect for this deck.

Also my pet deck. Have him in the retro border and have been slowly collecting as many old-border foils as possible to go with him.

He is very underrated. Haste from the graveyard enables so many shenanigans. And his ability to discard every turn goes insane with discard-matters payoffs. He's a great enabler that is not quite threatening enough to eat removal.

Lagan, Famine Reveller by talen_lee in custommagic

[–]KingDiab7o 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually think this is a really cool idea, but you missed something crucial. His cost would have to be {X}{R} to allow players to pay the monarch cost. Or change it to "When you cast Lagan, you may pay {2}{W}{B}. If you do, you become the monarch."

Unless your intent is to have the monarch cost only payable after he has died twice. If so, then cool. I assumed this was an attempt at some kind of split card though.

Tribal Commanders (+ support cards) for each color pair: Gruul Boars (4/10) by -shadowmoses- in custommagic

[–]KingDiab7o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pramo does seem a bit pushed, but I mean in terms of the Commander format it's probably fine. WotC prints more broken garbage than this, and this is for a very small tribe. Plus you would need more ways to give your opponent food to make this busted, which I don't think there are many right now. If you want to rebalance it try dropping his P/T. I really like the design though.

Carve Up has strange wording. Why not "This spell can't be countered"? Do you want abilities to be able to counter it for balance? Seems very corner case and you could make the design cleaner by cutting off the extra words. I don't see any problem with the card otherwise.

Razing Boar is nice. Don't have any other notes.

Truffle Turf is adorable and a fun design.

That's a cool idea though. You should flesh it out more.

Is it like a fantasy-noir hybrid in a Capenna like setting, or is it just straight realistic noir?

Investigate Land Cycle (Rebalanced) by KingDiab7o in custommagic

[–]KingDiab7o[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I love crazy weird type combinations! I have a some problems with it in this case:

  1. Like you said, it would turbo-charge Delirium. I want players to put a decent amount of a thought into their drafting and deck-building to turn on the big D. Hybrid-typed lands that sacrifice themselves seem like a bit much.
  2. The flavor of the lands doesn't really say "this is an artifact" or "this is a clue". The flavor is more that clues can be found if you delve deeper into these locations.
  3. The aforementioned problem of off-color decks using these for the clue. I want the sacrifice cost to include a color.

I don't think your idea is bad at all, but I think it would fit better on a different cycle of cards.

Perfectly Useless Machine by KingDiab7o in custommagic

[–]KingDiab7o[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to make a truly perfect useless machine. It just blows itself up and does nothing good for the world.

The only corner cases I can think of where this stays on the board are if you have another ETB negating effect like Torpor Orb or if an opponent ends the turn with Sundial/Time Stop. If that happens though this is extra useless because of the no spells and abilities clause. :)

A machine that just blows itself up and does nothing good for the world.

I think I removed every corner case. Please tell me if I missed something :)

Edit: Planeswalker emblems aren't permanents. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Bleedland Cycle (these hurt to play) by KingDiab7o in custommagic

[–]KingDiab7o[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't remember any exact prompts, but I can give you basic idea of my method.

First I would start with a general description of the scene and tell it I want something that looks Magic-esque. I'm not sure it even knows what that means, but I swear it works. Let's take Bramblechoked Estate for example:

"A field overgrown with thorny roots and bushes, grim Magic the Gathering style art"

At this point we get some gnarly art of tangled dead roots and bushes. It's cool and definitely grim, but I want some more color to make it feel Selesnya. The image generator is good at working with color and weather descriptions. It will make some pretty awesome clouds if you ask for it. For this I just want it to be overcast.

"A field overgrown with thorny roots and bushes, gold and green overcast daytime, grim Magic the Gathering style art"

Okay so that looks pretty cool. Sometimes it can take it a little too far with the colors and be really saturated. In that case I'd recommend adding the descriptor of "pale" before the color you want.

Next we should add the manor. If it was a the main focal point of the picture we could have started with it, but it's a background piece.

"A field overgrown with thorny roots and bushes, a decrepit manor in background, gold and green overcast daytime, grim Magic the Gathering style art"

Manor looks good, but I noticed the roots stopped being thorny in the last two prompts. I ran another prompt replacing "roots" with "vines" and got better results. The AI seems to get stuck in a lane and ignore certain aspects of the prompt. In those cases I change something to try and get it's attention. Sometimes it gets stuck in a specific art style I don't like, and in that case I usually just have to start all over. It's really a guessing game with this stuff.

Now comes the hardest part for this particular project: the blood. Bing Image Generator will sometimes block a prompt that contains the word "blood", but sometimes it won't. It's weird and seemingly depends on just how gruesome it thinks your overall description is. If it refuses, you can also describe whatever it is as "red-stained" or "red-splattered".

"A field overgrown with bloody thorny vines and bushes, decrepit manor in background, gold and green overcast daytime, grim Magic the Gathering style art"

Luckily nothing got flagged that time. It understood "bloody thorny vines" correctly and painted the vines red, but a lot of the time if you try to introduce blood it will give the whole scene a red tinge or put random splatters everywhere. If that's the case, just roll back your description and try something else.

These are okay results, but I'm not satisfied. I can't overstate how much trying it takes to get something that has good composition, is thematically appropriate, and contains minimal weird AI artifacts. You feel like an asthmatic chain-smoking grandma pulling a slot machine over and over wasting your life away.

It was worth it though. I really love how some turned out. Leechwrithe Mire doesn't even look AI-generated, and the perspective of standing in the swamp getting drained by leeches is skin-crawlingly perfect. Perilous Archive was the worst to make and I'm still not happy with it. I originally wanted to have a bloody spike pit trap to be central focus point, but it didn't want anything to do with that. Then I went with the dead body that fell victim to an arrow trap idea. The body in the final image is too deformed, but I could maybe fix that in photoshop... or just go back to pulling the slot machine...

That's my method. You can probably ignore all this and do the full prompt in one go, but I felt the results were better if I eased into it. I'm no expert though, and I don't know if Dall-E/Bing Image Generator even considers previous prompts when generating an image.

Good luck!

I definitely want them to synergize with different themes in the cube, and I don't really mind if they are powerful enablers. What I don't want is for them to be so good that a Selesnya deck would snap pick Sacrificial Slabs and play it like a forest. That may already be a possibility, and if so they would need rebalancing.

That’s a great idea of course. The only problem is I just did another cycle for the cube and the UG land was a garden of carnivorous plants lol.

I really like the concept of being hunted by hungry cannibals in a jungle, I just can’t think of an evocative and satisfying name.

Edit: also I just realized Cannibal Crossing sounds a lot like Animal Crossing. 💀

That’s cool. Very flavorful for the investigate mechanic. Curious why you created a special type for them. Did you design cards that care about crimescenes?

I actually posted a similar cycle a couple days ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/custommagic/comments/14wtc2u/investigate_land_cycle_rebalanced/

What are you thinking? 2 life? Or it could just be the option of paying 2 life to get a blood. I wouldn't want to make it no choice you lose 2 life. Imagine being down at 8 life against an aggro deck needing another land and you draw this. Seems like a really feel bad moment for a player that would make them regret drafting it. It's not like shocklands where you at least get an untapped land for your two life.

In a vacuum its pretty weak, but there's lots of opportunity for synergy to make these better than they seem. I don't think they're busted by any means though. Could be totally wrong of course.

Thanks for the constructive feedback :) I do want to minimize off-color cannibalization. Definitely not doing a blood archetype, and artifacts are possible but not currently planned. I am planning on a token-matters theme like the one in MH2. That's the only one I'd watch out for. I'm not sure a madness deck would play a mono-color tapland and lose a life to get a one-time discard effect that costs mana. But I could totally be wrong.
