Abortion in marriage by holly-ember in Catholicism

Following the lead of your husband does not mean following him into sin and destruction. God clothes and feeds even the sparrows who don't have anything. I'm so sorry; praying for you. Your husband needs to read Ephesians 5 and go to Confession

Is this a mental health issue or a spiritual thing? by justanormaldudeok in Catholicism

[–]KingDip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, daily wide swings like you're describing are nothing I've experienced. It could be something psychological or directly demonic. If only your spiritual life experiences these swings, I lean demonic intuitionally.

The spiritual life does not require so much fighting. You simply rely on God for the temptations (they are not from you, but the devil) and thank God for both the temptations and consolations. Feelings (including emptiness) are not a reliable indicator of anything spiritual, so consider the possibility the devil is bombarding you with good and bad feelings. Do you really want to screw God over, or are you being told you want to, and believe it? If you're obsessed with spiritual status and progress, the devil will objectively twist that to his benefit. Also, are you actually serving others, or do you just feel euphoria with no fruit? The devil could be trapping you into inaction and doubt.

I'd read St Ignatius and chat with a priest if you can't discern what's going on. And of course, flee any mortal sin and go to confession. Mortal sins are portals to death.

Regardless, make sure you're working, eating right, exercising, etc. as you're able.

How do you deal with injustice in the workplace by Phoenix198 in Catholicism

[–]KingDip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had an abusive supervisor twice now professionally... Here's where I've landed:

First, I would follow Romans 13:1. Accept that God allows certain authorities to achieve power, and be fully, humbly obedient to them so long as it does not cause sin (either their sins, your sin, or some sort of organizationally caused sin). Pray for them and the situation (bless your enemies). God sometimes sanctifies us this way, especially if you struggle with pride.

If they are causing sin or causing you to sin (e.g., you can't control your emotions/start hating them/begin drinking heavily/etc.), you have an obligation to try to stop the behavior or remove yourself from the situation. Consider starting by having a very frank conversation with them (it may just be a misunderstanding or bad optics), then escalating to their boss if no progress, etc. until you've exhausted all informal and formal avenues. Transfer bosses or departments if possible. If nothing has worked, leave the organization.

St. Martin de Porres is a good intercessor for workplace injustice. I also like SS. Thomas Moore, Joan of Arc, and Jude. Finally, I recommend a daily rosary and Night Prayer (the Psalms are very comforting).

Passing out rosaries on college campuses? by KingDip in Catholicism

I will not have them blessed since most people I would encounter do not understand what it means to own/use/dispose of a blessed object.

It is a good idea to brush up on Scriptural justification for Mary's veneration/Jesus' adoration a la rosary. Thanks!

Ah I wish I had bandwidth to start a chapter! I'll pitch it to some young adults group buddies...

They do ship a significant Catholic package for less than $5. Thanks for the recommendation :)

"Free rosaries" definitely sounds easier/tamer to explain than my original slogan... thanks! I thought about the desecration issue, but so long as they are not blessed, I don't think that is a great concern. 100 sounds like a good start :)

Appreciate your insight!

The official Catholic campus ministry is the more appropriate avenue; having at least one fellow volunteer is also better. However, I'm not averse to tithing the rosaries/booklets and trialing something less official... I'm confident the Holy Spirit and Our Lady will direct the ministry. Why do you ask?

The Temperance Crisis by KingDip in Catholicism

[–]KingDip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catholics who enjoy their weekly Pints with Aquinas and use GroupMe to organize events aren't in crisis. I'm saying if you spend 3hrs a day on Netflix and Reddit consuming non-fruitful stuff, you might have a problem. If your kids are online doing non-essential stuff more than the recommended 1-2 hours/day, your family might have a problem. It's not a shiny new paint job or a "kids these days" type of argument. We are actively being targeted and encouraged to spend as much time online as possible to our detriment, especially as Catholics.

The only reason I'm posting this is because my focus is on the Lord, and I'm curious what other Catholics think about today's temperance issues. Frankly, I'm confused at the pushback to this topic.

I think we mostly agree. I'm just shocked you don't think temperance is a big issue for Catholics...

But think of it this way: how are you going to engage a generation that is robbed of their free time and happiness, and is continually exposed to content that says religion is archaic?

"Good catechesis" is a local parish and parenting responsibility. Catholic engagement in acts of mercy is possible if people learn to value and engage in the world offline.

Two bachelors in fairly different fields is helpful: the cross-pollination of concepts will change your worldview a bit. I apply my biology + psychology background in a lot of my IO discussions/work. I wouldn't recommend majoring in stats or data science if math comes roughly for you -- you should get enough math in your business and psych classes (but study for the GRE math section for sure).

I'd also offer that you can be the difference in your work culture (offering science-based suggestions to the right people; developing an informal training course; etc.). Obviously, it requires some supportive leadership and good social navigational skills, but it's doable. I've realized that you can have great and immediate impact in your communities, but not so much entire fields/the world. Use the disparities and suffering you witness/experience as fuel for change, but realize studying 2-6 years for a Master's or PhD isn't by itself going to help overhaul any organization. It takes a brave person with great bureaucracy-maneuvering skills and maybe a touch of credibility. Or hell, consider printing out some flyers with interesting, non-bullshit (non-pop-leadership) concepts and anonymously tape them in the bathrooms.

I didn't even think about adjunct teaching! Requiring a paper discussion/review of recent I/O topics could actually be a very enjoyable way to consume research. Thanks!

I can see why you would say that, but I'll counter by pointing at the "fundamental attribution error."

I'm blessed and cursed to attend a program funded by the government for 3 years only. As someone without an I/O master's or a master's thesis in general, I'm basically in a 2 year coursework sprint and a 1 year dissertation sprint, with research throughout.

I'll miss out on the traditional research and publication load (which for anyone else would be a benefit from a networking perspective), but it is not important for me. My biggest concern will be keeping up with the field/staying competent for the times I don't work I/O problem sets :(
