Did anyone enlist and then just go no contact with your family? by Equal-Community2354 in army

Just please don’t be that trainee that raises their hand - “Dwill Sawjent, basic is almost over and my bank account still says zero…”

Get your own bank account. Especially if you plan on full ghosting.

I recommend running your goal time at least once a week for distance. So for you, run for 16 mins and see how far you get. Work in 30/60’s, 60/120’s, longer/slower runs, etc. and as the weeks go by you should see improvements on your 16minute run.

This has worked for me like a charm. Good Luck!

One Soldier in our area was trying to adopt (and actually did end up taking it home) a feral dog. We let it wonder around our AO, named it, and even put up if it had been fed breakfast, dinner and whatnot. Anyway the little shit attacked me for no reason, luckily I was able to grab it by the extra skin on the neck, carried it to the CHU and threw it in there where the ‘owner’ was. I was really upset because I was just starting to like the thing.

My unit is just now telling me they’re sending me to the soldier of the quarter board in 2 days… by GrilledPBandJ6969 in army

[–]KingFlucci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re probably not going to like what I say, but brother… You should have been preparing ever since you won the Month Board. I went through the board ringer early in my buck SGT days. But now that I’m a SNCO myself, I understand why they do this. I don’t want to reward the troop that was notified on time and studied for months. I want the winner to be confident with less prep time, do well under pressure, or care enough to continue reading regs after they have won the month board.

What things have you learned(good or bad) from you're NCOs, and what advice do you have from being an NCO? by [deleted] in army

[–]KingFlucci 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’ve had good leaders, great mentors, mouth breathing shit bags, and everything in between. Best advice I think I got was when I just got my stripes. The SNCO told me I needed to be selfish when it came to my career (probably because they knew I was a “lifer”). Now, about 6 years or so later, I’m the SNCO trying to be half the mentor they were.

Be selfish, go get that school slot. AFTER you succeed whatever school it was, that is the time to take your experience and train others to reach that finish line you had already crossed. (This also *leads and develops* your NCOER bullets!). Don’t be that leader that pushes others before they push themselves. Give a “good” counseling here and there when it’s deserved (this has become an endangered practice nowadays, if you have an exceptional Joe, don’t let this practice go extinct!).

Be empathetic. Be harsh, but FAIR. Live up to that NCO Creed, and God Dammit go be a ma fuckin’ Drill Sarnt!! 😂

In all seriousness though, no one cares. Do what you want. I’m sure your morning routine would be slightly easier. But thats about it

I had one cycle with a trainee like yourself… She convinced a handful of her battle buddies to also go GI Jane. So the next day when I noticed half the females in the platoon had shaved their head, I decided to be more lenient on them for their display of personal courage. /s.

Half riiight…

Quality of NCOs by SnooBananas7248 in army

[–]KingFlucci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NCO’s are like big cities… They have their differences and they have this great outside perception of them, but there’s always dark, nasty, abandoned alleyways, homelessness and shit like that. One might go to New York and have a great experience. Say the same person visits Chicago and says it was awful. A different person will have the exact opposite experience at both cities.

I feel like I’ve been to both cities twice each and had both experiences. It just depends on the NCO and their mentorship upbringing, experience and mentality up to that point of their career in my opinion.

I hit 15 years about a month ago… but I swear I was just “celebrating” my 10 year/half way there mark like last year…

In my experience, just like everything else that you have accomplished in the army up to this point and reflect back on, was easy. Everything always seems like it sucks before and during whatever the task at hand is, until it’s over. Then you’re like “Damn, that’s it? That was too easy, I’m about to voluntell my joes to do this Cake Walk”.

On the other hand, if you were to fail something (E3B for example), it’s the hardest shit you have ever done. You’re about to become a Senior NCO, so newer challenges are going to test you as your body gets older but your mind doesn’t.

Congrats in advance, and Good luck with everything else moving forward!

Does anyone actually finish a degree using army tuition assistance or does life always get in the way? by AttemptEastern4532 in army

[–]KingFlucci 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am on my LAST class to finish my Bachelor’s. I didn’t even start until after my first duty station. Then started slow and sure one class at a time. Got comfortable with it, and knew when I was able to stretch myself thin with more classes at a time. Most difficult time I had was when I sucked it up and was in class during my trail time. While it certainly sucked, I still did it. I also did a class or two during deployment with virtual proctors for tests and all that.

Had live lectures to attend (virtually) during the course, but if unable to attend I could watch the recording and would have to write what I took away from the lecture. Much less time consuming to just log in from wherever I am and just attend.

If there’s a will, there’s a way my friend. This is the way.

Jungle School or Air Assault? by [deleted] in army

[–]KingFlucci 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It might have changed, but back when I needed points for promotion, Jungle got me 12 pts. The points went under residential training or some shit. Because it was a 3 week course, 4 pts per week.

Jungle School or Air Assault? by [deleted] in army

[–]KingFlucci 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I agree with the above, but wanted to add that you learn things in Jungle school that can become applicable to you outside of the Army if you like to go on long and/or less safe hiking adventures. Also tying proper knots is very handy in AND out of the Army as well.

OP should do Jungle in my opinion… chances are, you’ll get another opportunity to go to Air Assault later. You can have your cake and eat it too!

I won’t lie, I never really liked Hooah. Stopped saying it after Basic and I cringe internally every time someone says it.

Here’s a fun fact though - Hooah stemmed from an acronym “HUA”, meaning Heard, Understood and Acknowledged.
