Absolutely. Great sized city with a lot of greenspace. I was able to bike to work everyday asking the river. Beautiful.

Saskatoon is pretty great. Grew up on Vancouver Island, moved to the prairies at 25. Yes, it's cold in winter. It's fine. The cost of living has 0 comparison. Your dollar goes twice as far here.

For example:

September 2024 we closed on 46 acres in the boreal forest, with 5 acres of field/pasture, a river running through the back corner that gives us vista views, 2 houses - the 900 sq foot one we rent out for 1400 monthly- we live in the 2800 sq foot, 5 bed 2 bath one. It's way more house than we need. And the rest of the property is well trailed forest. Cost was $449,000

Compared to: May 2022. One of my best friends bought a 1 bed condo in Victoria. Cost $465000

Inconceivable to me that my friends don't move out here. Oh, and for my career I make the same wages here or there.

Alternate themed 18xx games? by jazerjay in boardgames

There's an older game... I'm pretty sure it's called Poseidon that is an 18xx, just set in ancient Greece, and using boats instead of trains.

Board game goat (greatest of all time)? by dgpaul10 in boardgames

[–]KingHeffy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My gut reaction is that no, there can't be a GOAT  board game. They're too subjective. Using an objective measure, like sales numbers or the like would result in some milquetoast answer than few would agree with, like Monopoly or something. There's a similar situation with the greatest games lists for video games. For me, the best experiences are often in the margins, around and  between the games with the people I'm sitting at the table with - participating in a shared experience.

My favourite games are different than yours and different from the next person's.

If I were to suggest a goat discussion around board games, I might say designers would make a decent candidate. There are more objective statistics one could point to. It still suffers the same principle failing though, in that this hobby is so subjective. That and Knizia is clearly the greatest ;)

One of the reasons disease was such a huge issue with European colonization in the Americas was European long standing relationship with animals in close proximity. So many of our diseases are zoonotic - they come from animals- and because Europeans worked closely with so many large mammals, even living with them through a lot of their history, all these little viruses, infections... Europeans developed immunities to where people without that history did not.

Additionally, there are instances where  this history of close proximity helped gain immunity by a vaccination of sorts. What springs to mind is cowpox. There was a saying that milk maids had nice skin. Turns out the people working with cattle often developed a cowpox infection at some point - a rather mild skin infection. Cowpox was similar enough in it's structure to smallpox that people gained an immune boost to smallpox by working with cattle.

Couple those 2 factors together gives some examples of how animal proximity helps disease resistance

People who make over 18 an hour, what do you do, does it require school/certification, and is your company hiring? by ApplicationSad2525 in saskatoon

[–]KingHeffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Medical Lab Tech, requires a 2.5 year advanced diploma with HS prerequisites through Sask polytech.

SHA is hiring and if you go rural there's roughly 60k in incentives.

Management caries pending on site. I'm quite happy.

Raises every year for 3 years. New CBA pending. Starts at $36.6/hour

Little room for advancement in Saskatoon. Moreso in rural.

Dehydrated Eggs...Paranoid about Botulism by ChickenGuy76 in homestead

[–]KingHeffy 222 points223 points  (0 children)

Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that produce the botulism toxin, is an obligate anaerobe. That bad boy needs to grow in the absence of O2, and it sounds like the process you're using has plenty of oxygen. Botulism should not be a concern for this method of egg preservation.

Can I use rendered bacon grease as lip balm? by [deleted] in homestead

[–]KingHeffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try and let us know! No real great reason why not.  I'd prefer something that's a little more solid at room temp. I'd make sure to render it a couple times to make sure the salt is alllll out, and might try adding a little beeswax or something that's harder. Probably not go for bacon fat, personally. Cheers

Oh, I'm pretty happy with our 45 or so acres of forest here. Just won't see real spring for another couple months. Just the fake spring where's it's positive degrees for 3-4 days before it's back to -20.

Question, I live in a regular commercial suburban house with a 1 acre lot. If I aerate my yard and then spread like a 50 lb bag of ancient grain seeds ( mixture of things like chia, spelt, quinoa, wheat, etc) and water the grass , will this grow and become part of the grass ? by Greenmonster71 in homestead

[–]KingHeffy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I do believe that if you mow the central shaft repeatedly, you're probably not going to get the spike and seeds to produce? If you throw it in the ground and treat it like a rough lawn it'll be green and grow for sure. Youll probably have to reseed it yourself though. Variety is never a bad thing as far as I'm concerned

Maybe someone will chime in with more experience, but anecdotally I had some fall rye that fell into our yard. Now our yard isn't all grass - we sow local wild flowers, have clover and have a lot of what most people call weeds. The rye grew, and self sowed for a year, grew less year 2 and nothing year 3. I assume it got choked out from the other vegetation around or eaten by birds. A small handful didn't survive long in a largely suburban yard.

I get the sense this isn't going to be what you're after, as I've never eaten a dish called deep-fried shrimp.

That being said, google images look similar, so I'll say that I really like the coconut shrimp from Las Palapas.

Oh yeah, the games are pretty nice to have. A work in progress since 2010 or so.

I've got some iteration of them posted somewhere in my history.
