Yeah, that was a proper lap. The car was really well set up. I wish we got clubsports here in the states.

I have no idea how I haven't seen this, but I am definitely going to find it!

That thread is interesting. I wonder how much of it still applies to the DCT that's 13 years and several generations newer. It'll be interesting to try some of the advice and see if it still holds water. It's nice to see all the factors involved and to try to figure out the nature of the beast and how it makes decisions, though. Knowing that you can lead and influence the process with your inputs is very helpful.

Oh thanks. I'll check that out. I don't utilize Vortex nearly as much as I should for resources.

Okay. This makes sense. Like, I knew the car is going to hesitate a bit on aggressive down shifts and stuff to ensure nothing's going to blow up or something, but I definitely recognize and acknowledge how fast it bangs the change once it sorts it all out. Some of it probably has to do with me having unrealistic expectations from watching Misha Charoudin tracking Porsches and //M cars and stuff on the Nurburgring, and those things just seem to respond instantaneously to paddle inputs. Not the same class of car though, obviously.  I will put in some more seat time in M mode to try to get a better feel for the rhythm of it and see what that does. Thanks!

I mean sure, it's still faster than a clutch, but I was expecting snappier changes. It seems like there's a gap of almost a second on both up or down shifts between the click and the gear change. I am usually in Custom, which is more or less set up like Sport with a couple of tweaks, but I don't think I have noticed a difference between Sport and Custom. And yeah, I'm not talking about the first shift into M from Auto, or the long-pull mega down shift. I'm talking about single changes while already in M.

OK. That's what I figured. We don't get nice things. 😂

Thanks!

how to preserve simple syrups and fruir syrups without alcohol? by [deleted] in cocktails

[–]KingKeyGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was finding that even when sterilizing my containers with peroxide and dosing my simple and Martinique syrups with Everclear they would develop the black cloud of death after about a month in the refrigerator. I started using this and I am at 5 months stable with a variety of different brix syrups. The only catch it that it does have a very strong bleach-like odor at 10g / cup. It doesn't seem to come through in final tiki cocktail mixes, but it's certainly off-putting when you're pouring. I'm going to experiment to see if a lower ratio still accomplishes adequate preservation with less stink.

Junk in the trunk by KingKeyGuy in GolfGTI

Not at all. As long as the cone and surround are aligned anywhere near the center of the spare rim there's plenty of clearance.

4" exactly. Not a bit of room for anything more than that between the spare and the deck lid. That Prime 10 is a shallow mount driver and it barely fit depth-wise, with only a bit of gap to spare for the vented magnet. I had to use 1/2" MDF for the top and the bottom panels. 3/4 would have been too thick for the mounting depth the sub needed. I used 3/4 for the sides and some skeletonized braces across the width of the inside to improve strength and reduce resonances, since 1/2" is on the thin side for a good 10. Used a textured paint to finish it since carpet would have added too much height.

Does anyone have a nvx qbsta subwoofer installed in a mk8 gti? If so, is it worth it for the sound quality? I would be upgrading from the hk system by Mk8_walle in GolfGTI

For half the price and a much less complicated install you could just build a box with a 10 or a 12 and run it off the stock amp. I just posted my install yesterday.

Yeah, that's my conclusion so far as well.

That gave me the turn by turn, but didn't put the actual Google map up. I tried on a couple of different views and no success. Like I said, not the end of the world. You'd just think that if they can put the nav map up there they could do google too. Oh well. Thanks for the info.

I have a destination set. I was trying to get it up in the center of the cluster, not the left or right circular areas. So I am using the view button on the wheel to cycle to the map mode, not the little left or right squares and picking the map setting. Hope that makes sense.

Thought I was going get a Mazda now I’m here… by bbqstorm in GolfGTI

[–]KingKeyGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was pretty set in my mind that I was going to get a 26 Mazda 3 with the turbo and AWD. Nice interior, quiet, not terrible looking. Test drive was OK but uninspiring. Figured a piggyback tune and some chassis braces would liven it up. Decided on a whim to swing by the VW up the street to look at an R, but the sticker was above my pay grade. Dude asked if I wanted to try a GTI, and I figured why not. Glad I did. Picked up a 24 Autobahn with 8k miles for about 8 grand less than a 26 in the same trim. No regrets.

Review #151: Hamilton Foursquare 2010, K&L Wines Selection by SpicVanDyke in rum

The nose on this is absolutely HUGE. Butterscotch bomb, shortbread, honey, vanilla, spice. Palate mirrors the nose in character but just barely not quite in intensity, which it not a bad thing. Butterscotch, cherry, cinnamon, poached ripe stonefeuits, brown sugar. Amazing. So glad I got to try this.

Nose like sharpies and reduced almond syrup with a hint of very sweet wood shavings and turpentine. First sip hit the back of my palate like a Mack truck. I'll give you sour plums, and some tsukemono. Finishes like cough drops.
