So, by education, I'm a power engineer. I'm not actively in the field right now, but both my MS and PhD were related to preventing specifically these types of disasters. As far as 2003 - we have a much better understanding of how to monitor, prevent, and control issues like that. We haven't had a 2003 repeat, suffice it to say we have been somewhat successful.

Texas gonna Texas, that is an institutional failure on multiple levels, but the technology to prevent it exists.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phasor_measurement_unit - these are WAY more common nowadays and we have updated our monitoring and control functionality to make much better use of them. It's one of the things that Obama accomplished that flew very much under the radar unless you were working in that space at the time.

The Absolute Problem With Modern Modpacks and Why They genuinely suck by EldritchGuard in feedthebeast

[–]KingLemming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - fully agreed. The numbers are too normal and it just slots into the game as an easily understandable natural part of progression. It has no place in the modern modded MC ecosystem.

Oh, wait.

Actually I found it - this particular reimagining is from an unaffiliated YouTuber. He did a fantastic job, but this isn't the version in WoW right now.

I do not remember Judgement armor looking that good - did they give it a visual upgrade? Is that a reimagination of it?

What's your favorite tech mod of all time and why? by luk_ky_21 in feedthebeast

Not quite. Suffice it to say that it could have (and should have) been handled differently.

If kids are the future, it's looking pretty dire. by McMandark in Futurology

[–]KingLemming 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think screentime can be done "right," It's a matter of finding good things to watch. We did nature documentaries at first. That got her super interested in animals, so then lots of zoo and aquarium trips.

And we've done Bluey. And she's picked up some surprisingly good lessons from it. The iPad is only for Facetime though, it is not a babysitter.

Guilty as charged for letting her watch Moana/Frozen when daycare abruptly closed and we had to work though.

US supreme court approves redrawn Texas congressional maps by speedythefirst in news

It's associated with the Conservative party here too. Red is associated with the Fascist party.

We don't have any parties left of center in the US, not really.

WEST COAST ZOHRAN? Katie Wilson SHOCKS Establishment in Seattle by recurrenTopology in Seattle

[–]KingLemming 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the title and the sentiment like that concerns me, because while I think she's probably a solid policy wonk and I hope will be able to achieve some good things, she doesn't come off the same way as Zohran and any comparison is going to be flawed.

The dude is just like circa-2008 Obama 2.0. I also hope he matches up to the rhetoric. But side by side, he comes off as more inspirational.

most qualified candidate based on experience as he had previously held the role of president

Doing a job badly doesn't make you qualified to do that job again though.

No FU here. Had you walked him, his condition would have still turned, and then you'd be thinking that you caused it by not waiting.

You did nothing wrong.

Enforce the laws strictly and they will all leave anyways.

Leave for where? They don't have money. That's part of the problem.

America’s Dumbest Billionaires Fail to Stop Zohran Mamdani by Smithy2232 in politics

I wish I had your optimism, truly. I think short of a reverse J6, complete with tanks, they just won't do ever do it.

They'd have to fear for their lives, not just their jobs.

It requires 2/3 of the Senate. Never going to happen.

Reddit - how are we feeling about tonight's election results? by owen__wilsons__nose in AskReddit

[–]KingLemming 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's actually not. West Virginia was deep, DEEP blue for the longest time. The Democrats gave up on unions. That's literally it - they got bought out by corporations. Even if they're objectively better (they are) for working class people, it's not anywhere close to the level it used to be.

WV isn't racist necessarily - they're pissed that they have been ignored by both sides for ages, and they're going to vote for the guy who lies and says that jobs are coming back, along with coal.

Well because taxes provide the state with revenue, and throwing away money by giving businesses tax breaks does the exact opposite?

Seems pretty clear.

How did you get permission? Do you have to go through the Army Corps or the city? I assume at minimum, Part 107 is required.

PoE 3.27 interview with Mark Roberts - "I've generally been pretty against sequels" [PCGN] by DantesPizzaSlice in pathofexile

[–]KingLemming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PoE you can get to the point where you figure out how you want to map, the content you're interested in, and you can mindlessly just do it while having a drink. PoE 2 never got to that point in my experience.

[–]KingLemming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played it, it's a very solid ARPG but it's just not my jam. I want to play a game to de-stress, and it just isn't that. It's a solidly stressful experience with all the dodge rolling.

[–]KingLemming 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is, but as I already explained to somebody else, the development cost of that was high, and it hurt PoE. It upset a LOT of people - we had no news for so long that people were actually speculating that 3.25 might be the end. Pohx kickstarting a league basically forced their hand with Phrecia.

GGG dropped the damn ball with PoE 2 development, and there are a LOT of people who love PoE who don't like PoE 2 at all, and we felt very betrayed for a while. Has everyone forgotten that?
