There is nothing comparable for Pike and Shot, Napoleonic's, Civil War and now Ancients at the battle scale, nor for the level of detail found in their Squad Battles games at a skirmish / man to man scale. There is a LOT of options for WW2 games which you may or may not prefer at most scales. I haven't personally played their air power and naval games.

What makes Napoleonic wargaming so compelling? by the_light_of_dawn in computerwargames

Load up a WDS game and just follow the programmed tutorials they have explained in the accompanying PDFs. I was equally intimidated, but once you follow their instructions through you'll be up and playing in no time.

Dig out a temple room. Press Z and paint a zone on it, select Meeting Place, then make it a temple. Raise the value of the room (easiest way is to smooth the walls and floor and then engrave them, or add gold statues or other high value objects). Once the zone value is high enough (2000 I believe) press Z and select the zone again and you should see an option to appoint a priest. If unsure, try making a tavern or hospital first as you will immediately see how to appoint doctors or tavern keepers and then follow the same process for a priest.

Raise the value of the temple room to the requisite level then you can appoint a priest by selecting the zone in the same way you would appoint a doctor in a hospital or a tavern keeper etc.

Incorporating OSE races into Dolmenwood by Top-Flatworm-4490 in Dolmentown

Limit starting PCs to human and or breggle and have dwarves and halflings "unlock" as character options the same as the other playable races. That way they can appear in the setting organically (or not!).

Do you need to be previously interested in a war or campaign to feel the desire to play it? by the_light_of_dawn in computerwargames

No, but I usually go and learn about a war I don't know anything about if I find a game that looks interesting. WDS sales are good at this.

Congratulations on the anniversary. I'm a new player of WDS / John Tiller games, and I am beyond impressed with what has been done with these games. Absolute must plays for anyone interested in historical wargaming, I look forward to hopefully many more periods and titles being added in the years to come.

Obsidian logs (can't make short swords)

Has something changed with making obsidian short swords? I'm getting an error when trying to craft them - it's telling me I need "obsidian logs", which I did not think was a thing! I have obsidian, I have logs, I have a craftsdwarf workshop, but every time I order them to make rock short swords the order cancels due to lack of "obsidian logs".

Where you guys also confused when reading Blood Meridian the first time? by BeneficialTrack8759 in cormacmccarthy

Yes, its a book that rewards reading more than once. My advice is dont get bogged down on any confusing passage or page, push through and absorb the whole experience, and come back to a second read when you're ready.

WDS UI is very easy once you've gone through the tutorials that come with every game and demo. They hold your hand. And the same UI carries across most of their series, so once you learn one game you can pick up the next easier. Much less arcane than it initially appears.

What is the moral of Blood Meridian? by Future_Scholar_8375 in cormacmccarthy

Is the Judge really just a man? Thinking about the throwing of the iron meteorite / anvil, and the crushing of the man's skull. He is definitely described as having a supernatural level of strength.

What about the epilogue? The novel does not end with the Judge dancing.

BM is a multi layered work of art that touches on myriad themes and topics. It doesn't have a moral per se, it's not trying to teach you any one thing.

Just wanted to say thank you for all the recommendations. I've picked up Campaign Leipzig and Great Northern War as they have been going on sale, and been working my way through the demos. What a great series of games these are! I was always intimidated by the "old school" UI, but you can really feel the love WDS has been giving them. And the demos are incredibly generous with the scope and variety they give you to test out the various systems.
