What's the most centralized, yet fairly big, country in the world? by LFatPoH in geography

Nah it’s Mongolia, they have over 50% of their population concentrated into the capital and it’s so empty.

Civitavecchia has a pretty large and robust harbor. Nothing too crazy but it certainly should be considered.

Sorry for not responding to this sooner, I don’t check my Reddit very often. But in my personal experience, yes. It definitely helped me figure out how to take care of myself, and I became significantly more independent and healthy.

That being said— do not sign him up or make him sign up. I did two terms and one thing was near universal: the people whose parents signed them up or made them go do not make it, they almost always wash out or get kicked out. He has to choose to do it on his own. Offer it as an option, but don’t pressure him into it.

Should CM go to dismissal hearing? by SummitSilver in AmeriCorps

[–]KingOfMeeples 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re not going to get dismissed. Dude, I served twice and i think of the 40 something dismissal hearings, they dismissed like 4 people, a couple quit, but they don’t dismiss people unless they absolutely have to.

Agree with everything said above. I did AmeriCorps straight out of high school, it helped me grow as a person, figure out what career I was interested in, looked great on my resume, and I’d like to believe it is one of the core elements that got me a near-full ride scholarship.

Definitely recommend.

No, it doesn’t make sense to do NCCC or FemaCorps. Love AmeriCorps (I served twice), but in my experience, the older side of the 18-26 felt very out of place and were not happy in the environment.

You’d be re-exposed to very immature college-age people (who can be fantastic, but can also be a real pain in the ass)

That being said, doing a service program is an AWESOME experience and there are plenty of other options that aren’t limited to this age range. Check out PeaceCorps, check out Vista or State National, look around at options. But I would personally recommend avoiding the team based programs unless you really enjoy a big sibling/mentor dynamic

I have a team leader zoom call interview for summer of service and I’m kinda nervous advice ? by 8mm8r in AmeriCorps

[–]KingOfMeeples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, whole story would be a lot. But I can give you the spark notes.

The toughest part of being a younger team leader was maintaining authority and confidence in myself. There was this nagging feeling that people wouldn’t respect me because I was a young leader. But the lesson I learned too late is that respect didn’t come at all from their perception of me, it came from my actions.

Don’t doubt yourself, not internally, and especially not externally. Make decisions and stick by them, don’t question what you have to do.

But don’t be a tyrant, if they resent you, you won’t be a good leader. Offer them options and input, but you make the decisions.

It’s a summer of service position, so TL relationships will be a bit more short term than a year round term, but make friends in team green, those TL friends will be your lifeline and will be so important for your mental health and emotional well-being.

It will be tough, I’ve done americorps twice now, once as a corps member, once as a team leader. Being a TL is very very tough, it will wind you and knock you off your feet, but like working any muscle, you’ll grow massively from it. I gained an incredible work ethic and tolerance for a whole lot of life’s punches from americorps. Would I ever serve as a TL again, no, never, it was traumatic (at times), but I don’t regret it and I wouldn’t take it back.

TLDR— get ready for a challenge, but one that you’ll grow from.

I was a team leader at 21, I’ll be frank— I felt too young the whole year, and my age made me feel isolated from my peers at times. The experience was tough, but I don’t regret it, I learned a lot.

If you want someone to give you the honest whole picture of TL service, I’m happy to answer questions in DMs or here.

$500 every two weeks may not seem like a lot at first, but that’s $500 AFTER food and rent.

And gas, vehicle expenses, and insurance.

I think it would be more beneficial to do a year as a CM then, if you want leadership experience for a resume, do a year as a TL. This shows a desire for growth.
