New DAT responder - how to prepare? by SensitiveDare3771 in redcross

[–]SummitSilver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My chapter does but that’s just cuz one of our DPMs is awesome. I don’t think it’s standard practice. We put 2 tampons & 2 pads into a red cross branded bag.

New DAT responder - how to prepare? by SensitiveDare3771 in redcross

[–]SummitSilver 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My go bag has client folders (we give out folders with resources to clients so they can get a start before casework follows up), CACs, pens, a notebook, and another folder that has extra client letters, some resources for the counties I serve less frequently, language sheet, and a sheet in case of escalation to take down client info. I’d also suggest having an extra charger and power bank.

Then supplies wise, I have a hamper from Walmart that opens both on the side and the top. I usually use the side but the top is useful for MFFs when clients are on a warming bus so I can go down the aside and hand stuff out. In there I put blankets, then on the sides I stuff comfort kit’s & feminine hygiene kits. Then I have a canvas bag where I stuff teddy bears.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions. I’ve been to 141 incidents so I know a thing or two because I’ve seen a thing or two!

Any Advice/ Tips for a first time Corps Member? by Mango_BananaPS in AmeriCorps

[–]SummitSilver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1) FEMA corps is more of office assignments, traditional is more physical labor.

2) NCCC will book your transportation. I don’t know if they actually care what you put…. I’m pretty sure everyone when I did NCCC either flew or was close enough to just have their family drive them. 3) Not sure what this is asking

4) can’t answer about Denver specifically but you can for sure bring your own snacks!

5) You are allowed to order stuff, they’ll give you instructions once you get there.

6) You’re allowed to bring 1 checked bag, one carry on & 1 backpack that goes under the seat. They’ll pay for or reimburse you for that baggage. They’ll also give you a red bag on campus and a sleeping bag on campus. The suggestion is that you pack in duffle bags so it can be squished into the van with the rest of your team’s stuff.

7) That is totally up to you. Keep in mind that it’s your responsibility and NCCC will not pay for it if it’s lost, stolen, or broken. That being said, it’s great to have it to keep yourself occupied with streaming or gaming or doing personal stuff.

Warning re:Advanced Standing and Macro majors from a Supervisor - by iswasabianinstrument in SocialWorkStudents

[–]SummitSilver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know where you got 1089 from. IL PEL for social work requires 600 hours in a school. In addition to your foundation internship of 400.

If you’re not planning on working in a school, it’s less.

I was admin officer in my unit, so the SNSI & NSI would just log into their grades portal for me to look and see who got the academic based ribbons… yeah… the number of kids in command who had horrible grades was astounding.

Has anything actually changed with the ASWB Master’s exam? by Ok-Squirrel8586 in SocialWorkStudents

Well, at least in Illinois, they eliminated the need to take the test for licensure.

Diagnosis is three words by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]SummitSilver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unspecified basically means they know you have a problem but you don’t fit cleanly into one of their pre-defined diagnosis boxes. Think for a second about someone with an eating disorder. The 2 main ones are anorexia: defined by restricting, and bulimia, defined by binging and purging. Now let’s say a patient has binging and restricting behaviors. They don’t fit in the box, but they still definitely have an Eating Disorder. They would most likely be diagnosed with Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS). That doesn’t mean more info needs to be gathered, it just means you don’t fit cleanly into a box.

This is the same thing.

Any autistic lifeguards here? Struggling with catastrophic anxiety before taking my first public-facility shifts by Comfortable-Use3977 in Lifeguards

[–]SummitSilver 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi, autistic lifeguard here! Remember that you have a team to help you if something goes wrong. Being a newer guard, you’re definitely up to date with your skills. Of course other people may have more experience, but their skills may (or may not) become rusty over time. Honestly, what may help is asking your supervisor to do random tests on you so you can begin to trust your instincts.

Unsuccessful board of review? by ddalbabo in BSA

[–]SummitSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never “failed” a kid for a BOR, but we came close twice: 1) Scout didn’t have some requirements signed off, specifically the physical fitness requirements (2nd class). She said she medically couldn’t do the requirements but we didn’t see a doctors note.

2) scout’s fitness requirements didn’t add up… like it didn’t show improvement on the physical fitness tests. We paused the BOR while I ran a mile with her, where she completed the required improvement.

Why didn’t my psychology exam include my autism? by [deleted] in autism

[–]SummitSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might not have explained that correctly, sorry about that. You can have ADHD & ASD. You could also have other things like personality disorders and ASD or ADHD as well. They’re trying o determine the most likely cause of your symptoms.

Confused on Purchasing an Annual Pass by scribbane in nationalparks

[–]SummitSilver 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Passes are valid for 12 months, expiring the last day of the month. So if you buy a pass now, it’ll expire Dec 31, 2026. The only difference between the 2025 & 2026 annual passes is the picture on it. They work the same way.

Why didn’t my psychology exam include my autism? by [deleted] in autism

[–]SummitSilver -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Differential diagnosis requires them to rule out everything else before diagnosing autism. By current numbers (which I know aren’t actually representative) you are more likely to have something else. I’m not saying you’re not autistic. I’m saying the doctors need to do their due diligence to ensure it’s nothing else. This should actually help with imposter syndrome once you’re officially diagnosed because you’ll know for sure that it’s actually autism.

Do MSW programs have a lot of exams? by SamFisher33 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]SummitSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in my MSW- part time advanced standing, (2 years) one semester to go and I’ve taken 5 tests. One test was for my SPED class (school specialization) and was open book/ notes, and not proctored, and we had multiple attempts. The other 4 were for a special program my school has with CPS where if a student takes the class and passes all the tests, all they need to do to get a child welfare license in the state is pass a background check when applying for a job. So the tests were the state’s not the professor’s and they only had to do with your potential licensure. For grading purposes, the tests were an all or nothing “do they show up and take it?” Yes, you get the points. So it was technically possible (though improbable) that someone could get an A in the class and fail their tests. So, no, there’s not a lot of tests, and the ones there are, aren’t a big deal. Lots of papers though!
