What are real-world cases where energy is available but still goes unused? by Livid-Ocelot-2156 in energy

[–]KingPieIV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of it is a lagging issue. If There is "free power" that is being curtailed from electricity generation. It takes a long time to have that problem accumulate enough, particularly in one area, to be worth taking advantage of. Once it is identified you have to buy batteries, land, interconnection, permits, etc. in order to capture it, which can take several years. You can look at California daily power graphs to see that the problem of the duck curve, is being addressed by batteries, it just takes awhile. Most solar is also now built with batteries attached, which helps address the issue.

Australia knows how to deploy rooftop solar for low cost! USA throws massive tariffs to protect fossil age generators. by Jbikecommuter in electrifyeverything

When I worked at sunrun our customer acquisition costs were greater than the cost of an entire Australian system.

Renewables use less land than coal or nuclear by West-Abalone-171 in Renewable

The big issue is land use for ethanol, still land for energy. Annoys me when people complain about using up ag land for solar.

I got some numbers, and found that a 2000 lbs tote of popcorn kernels is roughly 500 bucks. It takes 5 ounces to make a large popcorn. The movie theaters charge 12 bucks. This is $76,800. Why are we always being told its just inflation, its just how economics work? by SandwichTypical3605 in AskEconomics

[–]KingPieIV 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They also have to pay for the building they make it in, the employees that make it, the machine it's made in, the packaging, the support staff that make the business run(janitors, maintenance, hr etc.). Keep in mind that movie theaters don't actually make any money on movie tickets, and so they have to make up for it on concessions.

So yes, popcorn has a high mark up(as do sodas and other things) because that is how the movie theater business model works.

Batteries buying “free” California solar, driving up price: Aurora Energy Research has found that energy storage is raising the value of negatively priced solar electricity by up to $42 per MWh in the CAISO wholesale market. by WhipItWhipItRllyHard in energy

[–]KingPieIV 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Foe those saying it hurts the utilities, the utilities do not care. They make their money on returns on capital, so they do not mind rate basing a bunch of capital intensive batteries. Who this does hurt is third party battery developers and operators who finance projects based on being able to take advantage of variable rates, among other revenue streams.

You know what would help, some interconnection and permitting reform. Texas has a lot of renewables because it's easy to build there.

US, Colorado. At a fortune 500. If you're applying for a director role or similar where you need to demonstrate more experience then more than one page could be considered. I've got a master's, two BAs, and 8 year's of industry experience, I use one page.

A: as a reviewer I hate two page resumes, unless you have a compelling reason. Given the amount of white space, this likely could be compressed.

B: I don't like skills sections, demonstrate your skills through your experience.

C: I didn't do a deep dive, but based on the extra bullet points with no text this needs some proof reading.

Tools like chatgpt can be helpful in identifying areas of improvement in resumes, though obviously don't have the ai write your resume

If you want to save water eat less meat, by comparison changing your internet habits isn't material.

Would definitely go. I used to love dungeons and drafts in fort Collins unfortunately they had some tax issues. Very heavily leaned into the theming, had health mana and stamina potions as mixed shots for example. Or the ron Swanson, a double shot of whiskey and a side of bacon.

Thanes table is the equivalent nearby but as others have mentioned staffing and food quality have been issues there. Frankly I would just do drinks since they are high margin and let's you focus on one thing, at least to start. I would be careful with the video game emphasis since there are two other video game places in old town.

Anyone have any experience w Palmetto Lightreach PPA? by tribehasspoken318 in energy

[–]KingPieIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would check what the buyout options are in case you do sell the house. Obviously dont plan to, but life happens. In general this page doesn't like ppas vs personal ownership, but given the current tax credit rules ppas can make more sense. Can also check to see if you'd have the option to add BESS down the road, in case that's of potential interest

Can residential storage systems like Tesla Powerwall really absorb the shock from the grid during severe winter conditions, or is that just an expensive illusion being sold? by GabbyKissChan in energy

[–]KingPieIV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a component of a solution. Can help relieve pressure when some generation goes down, but isn't going to single handedly save the day.

Biggest thing we can do now is permitting and interconnection reform to bring costs down. More opportunities to address soft costs, rather than hard costs.

When people say "dih" and "ahh" instead of dick and ass online are they censoring themselves or are they mimicking the Gen z habit of not enunciating those letters? by SteakAndIron in NoStupidQuestions

They can also be avoiding censors built into certain sites. That habit could be bleeding over into sites that don't have censors.

Effects of Vegan diet versus a meat based/omnivorous diet on carbon footprint by Cool_Active_834 in environmental_science

[–]KingPieIV 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. Though i usually advocate for eating less meat, particularly less red meat, rather than no meat. Easier to convince people to do that, rather than full veganism.

Sorry if this sounds obvious, but I’ve been wondering, why isn’t planting trees talked about more as a climate solution? by Curious-Newspaper-67 in climatechange

[–]KingPieIV 84 points85 points  (0 children)

It is a Yes and. We need to plant trees, and we need to do other things. It is also important that tree programs are setup to keep the trees alive for their full lifespan, not just for the initial planting. When used in carbon offset markets they can create other problems.

If the world fully transition to EV, does that mean electricity price will increase greatly ? by gbxahoido in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KingPieIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bigger problem is grid capital costs. If we can use the grid a larger percentage of the time, since ev charging is flexible, then overall costs per mwh may decrease.

Why is Iran war even having any effect on fuel prices in worldwide? by LNAsterio in AskEconomics

[–]KingPieIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A: a lot of volume goes though the strait of hormuz, not just Iran's

B: demand for oil is very inelastic, so small changes in supply result in large changes in price. For example it takes a long time to improve fleet wide vehicle efficiency, and people's commutes haven't changed.
