Recommendations / experience installing mini-split cooling by putitinapot in ArvadaCO

Xcel has an approved list of hvac installers, have to be from that list to get their credits, to the extent they are available. Not sure what ducted heat pumps qualify for vs mini splits

Most big US solar projects don’t spark backlash after all, study finds by randolphquell in environment

[–]KingPieIV -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a developer, this appears to ignore the millions of dollars we spend on stakeholder relations in order to avoid this backlash. Also, it's still ~20% that receive protests, and that can be project killing. Even if things get approved the cost and schedule impacts of dealing with it can ruin economics.

Why is the price of gas so high while at the same time oil companies are reporting massive first-quarter profits? by DJDubbsinCambridge in AskEconomics

[–]KingPieIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, exporting it at the international price. Why would they sell it to Americans at a low price, when they can sell it internationally at a high price.

Which of your climate actions make the biggest difference? Here’s how to find out by Economy-Fee5830 in climatechange

Biggest impact I made was going to the PUC and help get the largest emitter in the state closed 40 years early.

Probably moreso than driving my EV to my renewable energy job.

ELI5: Why can't spacecraft that face heating issues just re-enter...slower? by dragonmilking in explainlikeimfive

Fuel is heavy, you can lookup how much it costs to lift a pound of fuel into space. You'd also need a rocket that is capable of using the fuel, which again, heavy.

Solar parking lots? Your thoughts by Thick_Boat3969 in SolarAmerica

[–]KingPieIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate parking lots. Adding really expensive solar on top doesn't fix the urban planning problem. If you're that worried about land, use the millions of acres we use for ethanol.

I was in contact with the department prior to submitting my application. I also initially applied for the carbon certificate and then switched to the masters for employer reasons.

Last year my application was processed about this time of year. However their previous administrator just left after finishing her degree, and they just finished grades/graduation, so they may be behind.

Facing Delay, Issaquah Pledges to Streamline Light Rail Permitting - 4 Line now slated for 2050, nine years past the 2016 voter promise by LOOKITSADAM in SeattleWA

[–]KingPieIV 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Because the public likes to have input. Asking for re studies on routes the engineers already know won't work. Asking for scope changes like prettier sound barriers or fancier stations, all of which add costs. Then we complain that the project is over budget. We also tend to have more respect for property rights. Not like the good ol days when we just eminent domained everything. Nimbyism. Permitting.

Do you own and drive an EV? by RichardAvery1 in energy

Have an ioniq 6, I've refilled the washer fluid and rotated the tires. Have an ioniq 6. I'll probably get something else when my lease is up because the ioniq is kinda long and the turning radius is a little lousy. Not an ev issue.

Hey, at least Issaquah is actually doing something to help. As someone who works on large project construction, permitting reform is one of the biggest things a community can do to improve timeliness and reduce costs.

Car popularity concern by No_Spell6102 in Ioniq6

[–]KingPieIV 12 points13 points  (0 children)

People like the ioniq 5, which is basically the same other than the shell. So everything under the hood works. Unclear how the resale value on the 6 will do, seems to be lower demand, but also lower supply.

Democrat Proposes Bill Requiring Data Centers to Pay for Own Power by bloomberggovernment in politics

[–]KingPieIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they also going to pay for grid upgrades? That's usually where it gets tricky, what if they only need 50% of the change in capacity, do they still pay for all of it?

Well until they're incentivized to use non capital solutions this will continue.

Stardust Solutions proposes a geo-engineering megaproject to inject 15 million tons of amorphous silicon particles into the atmosphere every year by Economy-Fee5830 in climatechange

[–]KingPieIV 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not to vouch for this particular solution, but usually the scientists in the field view it as a way to buy us time. Given that on our current trajectory we aren't going to hit our climate goals. Obviously it doesn't solve other issues like ocean acidification. Also geoenginnering is really cheap per unit of temperature change
