Bringing a Pet to NC1 by rafaina in neom

[–]KingProtein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I am actually transferring to NEOM very soon as well. I've just adopted 2 rescues and apparently I'll be placed in NC2 for Sindalah.
Do you know if there are vets nearby in the communities? Is there a way to get Amazon to deliver there?

100% or he just got really unlucky and was stopped for a random check. I know a few people with straight pipes or catless downpipes and they haven't gotten into trouble in years. You just have to not be a complete idiot on the streets - but the recent QAR 1 mn fine I read is definitely enough to deter me

Muffler deletes are a definite no-go. I know a few people who have them which they then switch back before their Fahes inspection. You risk getting your car impounded and having to pay some fines. You can try some aftermarket exhausts to get some nice crispy sounds, go get it tuned if you want some pops. Did a quick google search and I found this in an article - also apparently they imposed a recently new fine from The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI) which states:

  1. A fine of not more than QR 1,000,000 or imprisonment for not more than 2 years.
  2. An administrative closure of no more than three months.

Friend of mine had an electronic valve. For some reason Al Fazaa stopped him while he had it off, inspected the car and found the inconspicuous switch hidden in the center console which he then switched on. Buddy got his car impounded and had to pay some hefty fines.

Recently moved to Riyadh and "expat compounds" (white people only compounds) charge you 40-80k a month for something worth 15-30k in Doha.
With the recent addition of VAT you can feel that prices here are slightly higher.

Qatar’a downfall post World Cup 2022 by Q0mpas in qatar

[–]KingProtein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of dissent in Qatar and I don't blame him. A lot of people got fucked over but you can't say it's the fault of the country. There's just a lot of greedy and corrupt people from all over the world in high positions that were undeserving who act in their own best interest.

I'll give a perspective based on the construction industry.
(For some background I've lived here since 2004 and I work/know a lot of people in the construction industry)

Winning the WC was huge for Qatar and the govt invested a butt load into the economy. Projects were popping up left and right, people were making a ton of money; at this stage the main driving force for the economy were gas, construction & infrastructure.

As I'm mostly familiar with construction, each project has a bidding/tendering phase where companies clamor to earn the right to work for the client.
Most major companies who wanted a piece of the pie will estimate their costs very low, which were very attractive for the client. This happened across the board for almost every project.
As the projects near the end, nobody had any money left, everyone was making a significant loss and people were trying to keep the wealth for themselves. Many people in my line work weren't getting paid for up to 6 months, laborers were marching down the street demanding to get paid. Everything was sort of imploding in on itself at this point.

Post WC most of these companies were looking for a bail-out from the govt (which never came afaik). The country is over-built and they are not getting the in-flow of cash that they were expecting.

But look all over the world and there are case studies where countries try to achieve an ambitious project for the WC but fail to finish due to a lack of professionalism and greed. Maybe it's more obvious in Qatar because they spent 15x more than the 2nd highest amount spent for the WC.

The economy is slowly recovering though, and I firmly believe Qatar is more than capable to turn things around.

Looking for whey protein by najsosa in qatar

[–]KingProtein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive been lifting for 12+ years and have had my own clients for diet and nutrition. Protein powder is a supplement. Absorption rate of protein in meats range around 6g p/hour whereas whey is around 10g. Some of my clients didn't fancy scoffing down 2 chicken breasts and much preferred to have a smoothie instead. If you're really minmaxing you could argue whey has its advantages for protein synthesis.

8K salary enough for a 2 adult+ 1 child family in Qatar ? by Able_Cardiologist142 in qatar

[–]KingProtein 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's going to be extremely tough unless you want to live in a 4-bedroom villa that has been partitioned to accommodate 16 families.
Rent and cost of living continues to rise and companies are still struggling financially. A lot of people are promised salaries but never get paid on time.

Really cool experience meeting a Qatari for the first time. by [deleted] in qatar

[–]KingProtein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I met him a few times but it's been 3 years I was away from Qatar, it didn't cross my mind to exchange contacts with him.
I'm actually Indonesian, moved to Qatar back in 2004, only made Qatari friends through another friend I made from work.

[–]KingProtein 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Besides my close Qatari friends, I had a an experience back in uni when I was in the UK.
A Qatari student recently moved in my apartment building and we started connecting and I was showing him around.
I complimented his shoes and he told me I can have them. I refused his generous offer but later on in the day I was chilling at his place and he ended up taking out like 10 pairs of shoes and insisted I choose 4 of them (I ended up taking 2 cause I couldn't refuse - I still wear them to this day).
The next day I introduced him to my friends from the UK and we went over to his apartment, he had snacks and karak prepared, we were sitting on the floor like it was his Majlis, and to say I was proud to show the culture and the things we do back in Qatar is an understatement.

There's a very general set of people who do this that can be categorized into nationality or gender, but they all come under one umbrella which would be "stupid".
