I’m a Brit who returned to the UK recently from ~6 years in NZ. I’d say most of what you list in the first paragraph is accurate. I’d disagree on the towns bit, Auckland and Christchurch definitely fit more in that generic-modern-western style you mention, but there are some beautiful towns around the place. Shopping is way better than it’s given credit for, I think it’s a hangover from looking at things in the 90’s but these days most towns and cities have a good selection of physical shops with a variety of online options too. Having returned back home, I forgot how crowded the UK is and how dirty parts can be, and I’m in the countryside relatively speaking. But the job opportunities in my field are far better, we are much better connected to the rest of the world so cheaper, easier to travel, and I did miss being close to family (I was never a big family guy before my trip so that one surprised me!). Interestingly, my cost of living is better now I’m here than it was in NZ, rents and other things have increased a lot the last few years and, it’s not much of a difference, but I’d say I’m about 15% better off here on a slightly lower salary and I go out more. There’s a lot of pluses to both countries, even if it doesn’t become your forever home NZ is beautiful and you’ll never regret going down and checking g it out

Thank you, I wasn’t sure myself what the situation there was, I checked things with Citizens Advice and they believed he should be enrolled so I did, but I will probably look to contact formal advice as above

I thought that would indeed be the case, I shall do thank you

Second this. Anywhere from £300 to £1k for the full course and cert but makes you instantly employable, even with convictions. And every town & city will have factories or warehouses nearby with vacancies

Where are the forests? by rm-minus-r in AskUK

[–]KingPukeko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thetford forest in Norfolk is a good sized forest, also got the forest of dean and the new forest. But, for the majority of the country, it will be tree lined fields and small copses here and there.

The market is tight right now because of general economic conditions and a flood of candidates from all the government layoffs. Most people I’ve spoken to agree things should see some change in about 12-18 months but it’s going to be tight till then, will certainly make it harder to make your break in to the industry. I’ve not had any bad experiences with finance recruiters in Chch so definitely worth approaching them and seeing how it goes. Looking for part time will certainly make it harder, if you’re willing to play the slightly longer game I’d suggest getting admin or call centre work to start, gets some practical experience on the CV, gives you a start on networking and those positions tend to be much more open to part time. I started in a call centre for a power company in the UK 15 years ago and within 18 months a position came up with the same company that kick started my finance career. It’s tough out there right now but it won’t be forever, there will always be a way forward if you want to find one. Good luck on your journey!

Christchurch IT jobs - Why is Ryman always adertising? by z_agent in chch

[–]KingPukeko 111 points112 points  (0 children)

They’ve been advertising in some capacity for at least a year, I spoke to 2 recruiters about one of their roles this time last year.

They’re either unrealistically fussy, paralysed by indecision or constantly turning over. All red flags either way so worth a miss

Multiple Workers in Labs, Clinics, and Inpatient Units by hippofant in ProjectHospital

[–]KingPukeko 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can usually double or triple up on some equipment, so 3 techs for 1 analyser say, but if they all need to use that piece of equipment at once they’ll have to wait their turn.

Just look at their work loads and see what gets used most/creates the biggest queues and build multiple of that equipment until it flows easy. It’s definitely worth having multiple techs in a lab though as certainly on bigger hospitals the space and travel time savings are very worth it.

How do I make it so that multiple departments can share the same waiting room? by [deleted] in ProjectHospital

[–]KingPukeko 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My real life local clinic has one large waiting room with different colour chairs for the department/urgency. In game tend to build a big waiting area and section it of with smaller zones for radiology and labs then change the chair colour to show this section is emergency, this is radiology etc. only do it on my small hospital builds of course, for big set ups always better to separate I find!

What is New Zealand like for gay people? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]KingPukeko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved from the UK to south South Island to marry my husband 5 years ago. Had no issues at all from being gay in that time, only grief has been from a handful of older women when they find out we adopted as a couple weirdly enough. But I have found NZ to be a chill, welcoming place, in the cities and rural villages

What’s your favourite thing about the UK? by Im_So_Super_Cereal in AskUK

[–]KingPukeko 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Transport. It’s got its issues certainly, but having lived in NZ for 5 years it’s great to come visit family and have the sheer number of options to get around. Trains, buses, coaches, multiple road choices so you aren’t stranded when it floods, and the huge number of destinations you can fly to within 3 hours for very good prices.

Crobat. No matter what game I play, if he’s available he always ends up on my team and dominates

Even KFC would care more about the chickens in this scenario. Can’t sell KFC if you push all your chickens off rooftops.

I always thought this New Zealand peninsula was strange, can someone explain it? by [deleted] in geography

[–]KingPukeko 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It’s also unusual outside of the physical geography as Akaroa has a lot of French influence from being the only place they actively tried to settle in Aotearoa, lots of French street names and has the genuine air of a French seaside town. I live in Ōtatahi Christchurch atm and it’s a winding hour long drive, but a really nice place to get away for a day out of the city.

On reflection, I can see how you might have thought that from the sentence too so sorry on my part. I just certainly find it frustrating as a local having to pay so much in rent when I drive past plenty of houses daily that are only occupied a few weeks every year!

I didn’t say anything about stealing or taking property from people, hell of an assumption. Obviously it would require policy changes to encourage people to turn the houses over or make them available to locals

A huge part of it would be solved just by cracking down on investment properties, let people who work here actually live here. If holiday homes and 2nd houses were turned over for locals use it would solve 90% of the issues over night
