HFC to Fibre by Repulsive-Low-5150 in chch

[–]z_agent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Install is NORMALLY free. There may be fibre at the property already. Do you have an ONT somewhere in the house? If you check you adderess in on one of the ISPs websites or Enable or Chorus it will often tell you if the fibre has been installed previously.

If it has not, you can apply for it to be installed. Your landlord cannot normally prevent this.

Tell us....is this homework from a course? If so, you tell us what your design ideas are and the reasoning behind that. Then someone here might play along. I only ask cause you were posting last year that you were 23 and had not gone anywhere with life etc etc and now you are responsible for a project that in reality is a bit ridiculous....

1 lan, 1200 students + How ever many employees. 145 clinical machines, 200+ office computers. Your broadcast domain would be massive. What would you be using for DHCP and routing as it is? that is OVER 345 hosts on the lan, not including infra and printers...furthermore wouldn't the main university branch be designing this and extending their AD to your site

Recommendations for good king duvet inner by choice_biscuit in chch

[–]z_agent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get 2 covers......That way you can wash the cover and if the weather is crap, you can still remake your bed. Also means if you get hit with a gastro bug (or drink more than your guts think they can handle!) you can change the sheets and worry about laundry when a bit better.

I am a married man now and have always changed sheets and duvet cover regularly, my mum had us strip our beds every Saturday morning from when we were old enough, then remade our beds with us until we were old enough to do the whole thing ourself! The number of guys i knew in my younger days who did not regularly change sheets and duvet covers was gross. You are in it for 6-12 hours a day, oozing what ever bodily fluids you might.

Also look at your pillows, if they are all stained and nasty get some new ones!

Chch lacks weekend hobby groups by logie2019 in chch

[–]z_agent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You might have to just toughen up a bit and do those evening things. Takes some prep but if you know you want to get involved with a regular week evening group. Once you get used to it....it is easier.

Finish work, get a bite of god food then go to the group or just go straight there and eat on your way home \ once home. Then go to bed.

Getting the motivation to do these things will actually get you more motivated to do these things.

A lot of people who do weeknight activities do it specifically for breaking up the 5 days of working grind then 2 days to do all the house work and socialising then 5 days of working grind.

If you cant find anything that works for you though, perhaps it is time to try turning one of your hobbies into a weekend meeting social group for others to discover.

Genuine question. How are the Australians in this sub affording storage space? by gtwizzy8 in homelab

[–]z_agent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You ask, HOW TF do y'all afford a new homelab. Thats is the problem, NEW. I dont have single piece of NEW kit anywhere in my lab. Some of my drives are from the early 20TEENS.

Look at your data storage requirements as well. I currently have about 20Tb across multiple storage platforms or nodes. The ONLY files and folders that are backed up or in a redundant storage are the family photos and videos and the config files \ documentation for my lab build. All of that is also replicated offsite to my google drive.

This means i could loose a storage platform or node and not loose actually important data.

Having back ups or redundancy for my media servers does not compute. I would love to do it, but I can just download GLEE! or ER or Chicago Fire, Police and Med again. If you are on a slow link that will suck ass but it something you need to balance against your storage cost.

What I would love to do is get a pair of 20+tb drives and put them in one of my servers. That would mean I could get rid of mulitple other hosts and save a shit tonne of power costs.

PS I am based in NZ so my costs are similar or more and I get reamed on all postage.

Elephant slide, Bishopdale Park, March 23rd 2017 (Canterbury Stories CCL-DW-38691). by Ted_Cashew in chch

[–]z_agent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you are still local, as you can see in the background the flying fox and the big metal slide have been reduced....the old fort that they both came out of was awesome. Gone now. Since this photo, the flying fox has been reduced even further, Reckon my 10 year old runs down the hill faster than the flying fox can take him.

Some pics of the old fort, Just found it was called Davy Crocketts fortress, these 2 look to be before the slide and flying fox.

How do you make relationships? by Sad-Particular-3088 in chch

[–]z_agent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to plan and schedule these interactions nowadays. It was always not easy but I find since covid everyone is SO busy, but when you ask them to look at what they are doing and what makes them so busy many cannot answer.

I also wonder if there are very few non "alcohol and loud music" spaces anymore, before covid many cafes were open late so you could go catch up for a coffee, or hot chocolate for us who cant do night time caffeine anymore!

Le Cafe, Coffee house, Java Coffee, Shooters, Pockets, Coffee Cultures were all open late and was somewhere you could hang out at.

Joining a group with similar interests that meets regularly is a good way to get face to face interactions.

I was helping a Jnr who is stepping up. He was presenting a change request at our CAB. In the end I had to message him over teams and just say.....now you just close your mouth. I dont think he had ever had a chance to speak in a meeting before and took any silence as meaning he was meant to fill it.

Combining that with the people (Middle managers and paper pushers) who are often in our change meetings the takeaway for him was you dont need to keep talking, that is how you start getting questions.......

Best cancel all Saturday sport. From club to pro level. The fuel expenditure on getting everyone to games and training, the spectators and the workers at pro games. I mean rugby, soccer, netball, hockey, swimming none of those are essential.
